Super
Comfertable and cozy
Cute place mostly seams to be college age people clean nice welcoming and quiet it’s people but not loud violent or problematic it’s nice like living in a coffee shop with people working and doing homework nice enviroment
Great staff, great place for the price only thing is the air con unit is really loud
Great
Excellent service, warm welcoming, lots of gratitude and hospitality living there
Great value
Has a great stay especially for my first time in nyc, Ronald was very friendly and gave amazing customer service. Will definitely be returning!
Unfortunately, I did not have a good experience. I checked in at about 9:00 PM. I was attempting to pay my hotel deposit with tears running down my face from how windy it outside. I couldn’t see the card machine it was so bad, and the front desk lady just stared at me as I struggled. Finally I asked for some tissues so I could see and she said no. Not even getting to the worst part. I get to my room, plop my clothes down on a chair, and step into a shower. And step into cold water. The shower room was the size of a closet, and inside was an inch of overflowing water. My clothes were soaked, and who knows what was in the water. I go back to the front desk lady and she brings up a vacuum. At this point 3 people were sleeping in my room, and none of them had reported the flooding. The vacuum failed and we had to get the bartender. He was very nice and helped swap some dollars for quarters to dry my soaked clothes. He’s the only reason this review isn’t one star. At the end the front desk woman looks at me and says “Are you good.” No, I was not good. It was an hour and a half later, I had dying to go to sleep as soon as I stepped into the hostel, and she had not shown an ounce of respect. I was not good. I finally got my shower and had to go back for my clothes. And I will not be going back there again. Thank you to that random bartender, he was very sweet.
You Don't give my 25 $ back.. Tou told me after i checkout you back my money
I really liked the location of this place because it’s away from super crowded areas. The subway was a 5 minute walk from the hostel which was really nice. I was able to visit all the touristy areas using the transportation nearby. The hostel itself was clean, warm rooms, good water pressure in showers. The only problem I had was trying to get a room with my two other friends, we asked a couple times if we could room together but they couldn’t. Other than that it was great, more than likely I’ll stay here again next time I visit.
It was very easy to get into Manhattan
Just, really excellent. From the Front Desk staff, to the Housekeepers. The staff makes everything most pleasing. This staff is top notch. Great kitchen to cook. Laundry. Nightly events.
The front desk staff was excellent!
Good
It's really a good place, clean, quiet and I love the customer service. The receptionist is amazing.
Love
Property is good and the location is very convenient.
Great show
The staff were really nice and helpful overall, the rooms were cleaner than I thought they would be (makes sense since they have cleaning done to each room weekly or more frequently than that). Would definitely check it out again when doing a short trip to New York
Bad service
good location. Its close from the city centre, 15 min by subway
I traveled to NYC for the Marathon. Access to the sub way is just down the street (~300m) E-Tran -airport 7- race kit pickup and race day bus pick up Staff were amazing and really friendly. They have a cafe and bar on site. There’s a craft brewery across the street (Focal Point Beer Co). I will stay here again.
Loved the laid-back, comfortable, modern atmosphere. So many places to sit and work/relax. Excellent place, would stay again. Biggest difficulty was the showers - head is far too high (at least in the female dormitory) and not adjustable. The water leaks out onto the floor because the liners are too light/short.
Great place to stay when you will spend most of your time out in the town. Clean areas and chilled environment.
Great way to meet new people, especially as a solo traveller
Cool hostel with some neat facilities, great for budget-conscious travelers. Decently sized kitchen with two fridges, *lots* of appliances, and very large common room/lounge area nearby. Very easy to get to Manhattan on the subway. The rooftop is the spectacular cherry on top. Curtains closing up the bunks would make for a cozier sleeping experience, and it won't wake roommates up when you turn on the lights or use your phone flashlight. Bunks were a bit rickety, and one morning (only once) the hot water in my shower was out.
Great find!
This place is cool and clean. Traveling solo but would be ideal for a group of friends, too. The staff were welcoming and chill. Got a coffee at the bar this morning and sipped it on the rooftop, gorgeous view! Arrived late to check in (midnight) but this was fine - I was welcomed in, no problem. Bed was comfortable (upper bunk), shower was strong and hot. There was a show happening sometime in the night - loud music from a nearby place- but to be expected on a weekend in the city.
Pro: Very clean and a great set up. Safe. Staff is excellent. Con: With on site bar, loud noise long into night. Rooms are hot, although the AC was not turned on because of others in the rooms preference.
The staff is amazing. The view from the roof is incredible. Laundry on site is $4 for a small load of clothes to wash and dry.
Best budget stay in NYC!
It was a super comfortable stay for a short stopover in New York City. Super close to a lot of the best attractions and restaurants at an excellent price! I’ll definitely go back we
I would have never booked this had I known there would be a rooftop concert on the roof of the hostel building late into the night. I’m in my 60s and couldn’t sleep at all, and had a long road trip the next morning.
Great location, and vibe
Location is wonderful and the view from the roof is amazing. After looking at what I spent per night, I am unsure if I think its "affordable" for just one bed, but perhaps thats just part of Brooklyn accommodation. I loved the common spaces, cafe and beer bar, and access to laundry was an added bonus.
Property is good for young travelers who can share a variety of activities. Requesting towels takes time to be provided as it depends on availability. Fridges are small showing traveler’s food packed in disorganized view. I could not put any food in due to lack of space. In general, it was a calm stay.
Great environment.
Very nice hostel
Solo female traveler
For the price it was very good, and if you get roomies they’re usually quiet and keep to themselves
Won’t visit again
It’s ok. The staff was nice and went out of his way to help me. I forgot his name but he was extremely helpful! Thank you! But the lady who checked me in did not look like she wants to be there. Although it was 2am so I guess thats understandable. The AC was weird because it was in and out. But for a budget hostel it was good and they have a free welcome drink.
I like the bar inside the building with a nice sitting area and the projector.
Other than hot water not available most of the time all fine.
The rooms were good they were clean and a place to lay ur head. The thing that made me want to continue to come back is their lobby, roof top, and bar it made it so easy to be down stairs or on the roof tops and out of the rooms. This place and the atmosphere were great and i will definitely be back.
I’ve come here twice now and it’s been a good experience both times. I would highly recommend this place.
Too much ambient noise. Music constantly plays in lobby area and on roof. Housekeeping crew is very good.
On return from international conference
Funky chi hostel close to the metro. Loved the industrial open plan spacious feel and the bar was a bonus needed after a long day of international travel. Unfortunately the check in system was down so took half an hour to check in, which was frustrating as I was tired. The staff were very apologetic. Loved the roof top city manhattan skyline view. Unfortunately noise from such came through the AC window unit so had a hard time getting to sleep. Loved that it was an easy walk or jog to the ferry to Roosevelt Island - great for a 4 mile run and very scenic. A must do!
Housekeeping crew is top notch. After a mass checkout of young backpackers, they ladies and gentlemen got the corridors and common areas sparkling.
Hot water for shower has been excellent except for the past two days.
It is mostly a mellow environment, but some events take place in the bar by the entrance or on the roof.
Well-run hostel.
I stayed at the Local many times in the past and just recently it’s nice hostel close to every thing like train station, dining places, shopping, Quiet area and the price is affordable .
Clean, had our own shower/toilet, right next to the subway station, fairly safe area, girls in my room were nice, complimentary drinks
Terrible customer service
The Hostel is a decent place but unfortunately the customer service was terrible, they gave my bed to someone else after I had already checked in and the lady at front was so rude and unprofessional.
Extended stay while looking for permanent housing. It's better for shorter stays. But still better than most.
There was a loud noice from a machine which was unbearable without noice canceling headphones - the top bed was to hot to sleep in when air conditioning was turned of Staff was nice and tried to help
The Local is the best hostel I’ve been anywhere in the world. What they are doing feels like, in no small way actually, a push back against the divisive, greedy way the world is going. What a beautiful community, sharing a beautiful space. The rooms are immaculate and comfortable. Strong hot water that’s good to drink. Can’t wait to return!
Communal living, sort of. Small kitchen with dishwashers and two large refrigerators. The honor system seems to work just fine. Common areas, with sockets to plug in laptops and tablets.
Nice Hostel in LIC
Good location for transportation options, especially public trains and buses. Many dining and nightlife options for the younger crowd abound, albeit it a bit on the pricey side.
Simple, clean, quiet.
Super clean in really good area
Trendy hostel with everything you need. The staff if friendly and helpful. The bar/cafe combo with comfortable seating areas is such a nice touch .
mixed bag
Nice staff and location. For the money paid they could have thrown in free breakfast or at leastl free tea and coffee but the owner is too profit chasing for that. Also some of the other guests were aggressive or weird and made the atmosphere different.
Service was horrible. They don't clean rooms or change sheets. Said they were understaffed. But they were not understaffed to charge full price. Never going there again.
Good
They don't care about their guests whatsoever. They barge into your room after a quick knock and don't wait for you to answer. Two men barged into my room without waiting for an answer, said they were from housekeeping and didn't want a "Goldilocks" situation, whatever that means.Their showers blast water into your face and you can't even condition your hair unless you turn it off. I tried another bathroom in the hallway and they deactivated my keycard leaving me in the hallway in a towel crying for help for 10 minutes before someone showed up. When confronted, they gaslighted me and said they didn't do it. Stay anywhere you can except The Local. It's a complete nightmare. They also refused to help me with a cab and when I showed them that "Yellow Cab NYC" took $5 out of my account, they couldn't even mention that Curb is the actual app you use to get a taxi in NY. IF YOU'RE FROM OUT OF STATE, or don't know what you're doing in NYC, don't expect them to assist you with any information. They're nasty and inhospitable.
The place is really nice. I won't take away a cleanliness star for seeing a small water bug. It's Astoria so it could've been a huge flying waterbug...
This is my go-to place to stay in NYC simply because of the staff they hire.
This property was pretty well kept amd staff was super sweet and helpful. There is alot of art or hipstery vibe to the atmosphere and I was slightly hesitant about the idea of staying at a hostel but thankfully My experience has been good with the roommates I was paired with and all of us were cordial and got along. There's definitely a sitting and study area, laundry facility/ Kitchen area that is shared by all guests and a beautiful rooftop where you can see the buildings and brooklyn bridge. There are drinks/coffee bar downstairs (Happy hour starts 4pm) . Any additional toiletries are sold at front desk and they hold lugagges for $1. There are also activities that they have throughout the stay and Some food place options are walking distance and the trains are not too far either.
Very good service but it could be better. I missed a few facilities at the room.
I love staying at The Local -- every time, it's a treat. Nicest hostel in NYC, and I always feel safe, too. Great access to multiple subway lines, and bus lines too, if you need them. Only thing I don't like is staying on the top bunk, but that's a me thing.
Best Experience
First bed assigned to me wasn't done after whoever checked out. But then they assigned me to the perfect bed and room possible and i didn't feel like leaving. Had the entire room to myself. The common areas are so nicely decorated and organized, service/reception top notch, activities and events were tempting i regret not having time to attend and rooftop view to die for! I hope to be back next time if i visit NYC, keep up the good work!
Wonderful hostel! Plenty of amenities, by far the nicest one I’ve been to so far!
Stolen food Sheets with stains Dirty commodities
First Hostel Stay and it was amazing ! The staff was wonderful shout out to Joy and the baristas at the bar ! They were all so welcoming and friendly. So helpful. Cleanliness 10/10 I seen housekeepers throughout my entire stay and they were ON IT ! For the price of stay this was exceptional. My roommates were respectful of each other. Definitely go to stay when traveling solo. Oh and the view upstairs SO BEAUTIFUL !
Great place to explore NYC. Metro connect to manhattan in no time… cool staff and great coffee. Recommended
Great place for price, booked last minute for 6 nights, stayed in 4 bed room with its own toilet and separate shower room, only 2 stops from Central Park SE corner, Common seating area with projector screen and other with desks and tables where phones/laptops can be charged, bar with hot/cold drinks available all day, common kitchen with all stuff needed, staff very helpfull and friendly, padlock for spacious locker next to bed provided if needed, pizza place few steps away and some cafe's and local food shops nearby, 10 minutes walk to park with great day/night view on to East Side of Manhattan. Recommended by UK/Poland visitor.
Good to crash for a night
Great hostel, the rooms were very clean and it was great to have a semi private bathroom. Good outdoor rooftop patio
Local Hostel
Clean place, lot of space, private. Good for a short-term stay.
Everything was as good for a hostel, with one big exception - when I checked in, my bed hadn't been made over from the last person that used it. I had to help the front desk clerk remake my bed and they promised that housekeeping would clean it first thing the next day but that never happened during my stay.
Good location
Had to wait an additional 2 hours to check in, then when i got to my room it hadn’t been cleaned at all. Our toilet only worked about half the time. However, shout out to the bartender she was cool!
I liked the modern design and common areas.
Excellent friendly service from the front desk staff. Cool space and a very great location to get to everywhere you would want to go in Manhattan and Brooklyn.
The vibe was amazing
good option to stay for a short trip! staff are always available 24/7.
The lady who helped me checked-in early morning was awesome!
Defenenatly coming back. quite and clean place. i stayed in the room with 2 bunk beds. Everyone was respectful. Make sure ask for a key for the locker under the beds to store your backpack. There is rooftop with no bar, but there is great lounge area on the 1st floor with the bar, coffee, crousans. Awsome chill place. Also, bands and DJs play music in the evening. and 1 glass of wine is included with the stay from 6pm till 9pm...
Staffs are friendly!
Nice location but the room was just ok
I like the location of this hostel which is not too far from the subway, and also there are some nice little cafes around the area. However, they don’t have an elevator, so it would be tough if you have big baggage. The room is ok but not super clean.
Some miscommunication when checking in but Ryzen (apologies if misspelled) was excellent and sorted things out
Good location. Excellent price and facilities to be in the place with your pc or cell phone. Has a kitchen you can use. A place with people of around the world.
.
This place is clean, safe, very affordable.
I never stayed. I cancelled my stay at the desk because I didn't like the fact that I had to share a room with three other strangers! It is a HOSTILE, not a hotel...and I didn't find out until I got there. I need a refund.
The property was very welcoming once inside and would recommend people looking looking to meet new people like myself or on a budget.
The Local is a calm, friendly and welcoming location.
All You Need.
Everything you need. Clean, plugs, very small bathroom in every room and its close to a major subway stop. Plus the staff was very kind, even when i messed up mu reservation.
The house cleaning ladies did an excellent job cleaning the place. A tall guy cleaned up the kitchen, dishes, sinks, garbage and everything each day. He did an excellent job! Very hard working guy. Bath towel was super clean and white. Fair price outside of Manhattan. The host was friendly. They didn’t change me for leaving my bad in the storage for less than one hour. No small bed lighting for each bad. No shower gel, you can buy from front desk. Some people might not be considered staying in the same room. A staff took his time resolving requests (without telling me how long it's going to take, after more than 10 minutes of standing and waiting). It was complicated moving to another room. Beds made noise with any movement. I stayed at the Hostelling International New York before moving to this place. People staying there were more friendly. It is 5 minutes from subway station.

This is a great stay at wonderful rate that is in a very convenient location. Everyone on staff is friendly, a lot of great amenities on location. I would highly recommend this stay.
