XTZ holders can delegate their tokens to a “baker” and receive rewards for supporting the security of the network and participating in governance. With the unique Liquid Proof of Stake mechanism on Tezos, token owners maintain control and flexibility over staked tokens, as they are not locked at any point during the delegation process.
In addition to validating transactions, bakers represent the staked tokens of delegators (stakers) when participating in network governance by voting on protocol upgrades. This approach ensures security, stability, and correctness, while allowing Tezos to upgrade seamlessly.
Developers around the world are using Tezos to build the foundations of a decentralised network and true digital commonwealth with smart contracts—from applications that break the status quo to rethinking what's possible in art, finance, identity, ownership, and more.

Tezos can upgrade itself through an in-protocol amendment process without the need for a hard fork. Performing upgrades in this fashion accelerates innovation, reduces the likelihood of contentious splits, and coordinates stakeholders within the Tezos ecosystem over a long period of time. The amendment process comprises four periods which, in total, take about three months from proposal to activation and involve several rounds of community voting. For developers building on Tezos, upgradability provides a strong assurance that the protocol will operate smoothly long into the future. Learn more.
