All we could wish for

We arrived in the evening after a family birthday party. We were given a warm welcome, ate a good dinner and slept in comfort.

An absolute gem

We thoroughly enjoyed our last minute stay here with our doggies. I cannot fault a thing, the apartment we stayed in was very generously sized and had everything we needed. All of the staff were welcoming and helpful. We stayed for dinner one evening and there was a wonderful atmosphere and our food was delicious, highly recommend the Milk Tart as a sweet treat to finish off the meal. This is a wonderful gem in a gorgeous setting, and we will definitely return.

We arrived to a warm welcome and lovely room at The Talbot. This is an excellent hotel accommodation choice if you're cycle touring. The food was excellent and they went above and beyond to make our stay wonderful. Our bikes were secure too. Highly recommended. Thank you!

Kim and Richard were superb, fantastic recommendation for a lovely walk nearby, food was delicious, room had everything we needed. The atmosphere was wonderful, the regulars all super friendly, highly recommended, would jump at the chance to stay again!

A disappointment

First impressions not good. Basically shown to our room and left to get on with it. Not told about emergency procedures or if there was anyone on the front desk or who to contact. Furnishings in the room were poor. The lampshade was broken as per the pics. One bed was loosely put together, kettle had seen better days and didnt switch off after boiling. The wooden chairs were broken and the wardrobe was old and worn. Paint was peeling off the window sill. A shelf was missing in the bathroom over the sink and the toilet brush was very dirty. And just to top it off the main light bulb was very dim and old and the room never got any sun so was very gloomy. A nice canvas of the lovely Dorset countryside would have looked a lot better than a fruit canvas. We would not stay here again. Price per night was high and didn't include breakfast. Very disappointed.

Awful

Awful place, freezing cold, not hot water and we.were.told they are closing in 3 weeks, they really didnt care! Beware !! Food is awful, rooms smelly and cold, landlady is miserable. Avoid at all costs

TV remote did not work on volume and no apparent way of changing volume on TV Cold water not working on sink nor toilet cistern. Bath OK

Great place in a beautiful village. Staff were helpful, great spacious apartment. Highly recommend!

Warm friendly greeting. Room looked pleasant enough but would not pass the "Alex Politzi" test. Dust on furniture, cobwebs in the grate, curtains hanging off poles (due to the type of rail). Towels on the bed not in the bathroom. Room was draughty and cold. We had to get a blanket from the car. Cold water ran hot when it eventually came through. Evening meal was basic but good quality and well cooked but several things on menu not available. Not informed there was no breakfast available, contrary to the website. Had to ask about breakfast and advised to go to the village shop. Village shop does not serve breakfast per se but was able to provide toast and tea/coffee. No customers in the restaurant or bar, we appeared to be the only ones in residence. This is a basic hotel catering for contractors and travelling salesmen, not what was represented on the website.

Shocking, and expect a refund

Well…. The manager/host was a total dithering wreck. We soon were told that there was no breakfast even though breakfast was included in the price. The rooms were so out dated and needed attention everywhere. Paint flaking off walls, mould on the window sills. We were then advised that there really was no evening meal as there had been a family party ( their family) and he wanted to leave at 7pm, and didn’t want to turn the friers on. The barmaid ordered us a Chinese locally which was nice for the price. The landlord was still there when we went to bed at 10pm. Very disappointed and would not recommend anyone else staying there.

Website misleading. Kitchen shut for 23 hrs in the day. Staff and landlords otherwise very helpful.

The property is beautiful and well kept, beautiful location. No much eating options, you need a car to drive around

Back to the 80’s!

Had to struggle with three separate blinds on the window - felt like I’d had an arm workout by the time I’d finished! - didn’t block out the light or the draft. Cups were dirty and chipped. The keyring is so ridiculously large you can’t fit it in a pocket - I know they need to try and stop people forgetting to leave them when they check out (I had to just dump it on the bar as nobody was around) but it was almost as big as the to remote! Doesn’t serve breakfast but this is not mentioned anywhere on the write up, hotel’s website or during communications or check in - it’s only mentioned on a notice on the wall in the room. The suggested cafe is a good 20mins walk away at a nearby school! Dinner is only available between 6-7pm (again, this is not communicated) and there’s only two options for vegetarians - a vegetable lasagne or a soup. I opted for the “home cooked” soup which turned out to be packet soup they’d just added water to - bright yellow with about 3 tiny chunks of rehydrated carrot. One of the worst places I’ve ever stayed in If I’d been booked for more than one night I would’ve cancelled the rest

Pleasant atmosphere

Lovely people, comfortable bed

On entering the property it was noisy not what I was expecting very laid back approach room was right above the noisy pubs bar so no way of having an early sleep due to said noise (after a 6hr drive ) food was mediocre at best and a set menu on the wall the exterior lighting for the pub shines straight into the room and lights it up like a football match so again no chance of an early sleep breakfast was set at a small half hearted English breakfast not other options available would I stay again definitely a NO there for over £100 I’ve stayed In considerably better and in better areas this was more of a £50 room and very disappointed

Pre- Christmas meeting with family

We received a warm welcome from the licensee, who showed us to our room. The room was very spacious and the accommodation met our expectations. Would certainly stay there again if in that area.

Had a very enjoyable stay. Food and drink were tip top. It's my second visit to The Talbot, hope to come again next year!

Absolutely lovely

Don’t stay at this place. Photos make it look good. In ‘Elderberry room’ paper on ceiling hanging off. ‘Primrose room’ mattress was very thin (it looked ancient) and the fitted sheet didn’t come more than 2 inches down the side. Whole place needs a freshen up. The one which according to reviews was going to happen in 2020. Found alternate accommodation and young girl said we wouldn’t be charged as we didn’t stay but there would be a charge of £60. Thus wasn’t true. Phoned several times to speak to landlords but was never available. They took money even though they didn’t have to service either room!!

Great B & B

Our fourth visit to this lovely pub & we enjoyed a 2 night stay this time. Currently undergoing refurbishment but this did not negatively impact on our stay. Clean & comfortable rooms in a lovely village. We enjoyed the welcoming atmosphere of the bar, the owners & staff were friendly & helpful & the food was delicious. Lovely !

March 2023 Stay - Avoid

There was no central heating, just a storage heater provided in the room so the room felt like a fridge. Furniture very outdated and could do with replacing. No hot water in the morning in the sink. The worst of al was the scaffolding outside my bedroom window, so woken up to the noise of workmen outside my window.

Clean, comfortable and good value.

A really pleasant village pub with nice clientele. Room was large, comfortable with a really decent bed and sizeable bathroom with an excellent shower. Slightly fading around the edges but the landlord tells me he's embarking on a refurb exercise imminently. Food good it you choose a meal that's been prepared in house (the beef stew was excellent) and OK if it has been bought in.

Disappointing

Unfortunately not many redeeming qualities here. Room was very dated, and in need of some repair! The water from thexshower trickled out like it was being powered by a hamster on a wheel. The room was cold becasue of the single glazing, and the heating not on. The single glazing doesnt help the road noise either. The bar person had no idea what the wifi guest code was and gave me the one from the bar...however this didnt work in the rooms so no work done that evening! The food menu was low in choice, but was adequate, but the breakfast had to be left. I think the water from the poached egg was left in the ladel so everything was swimming! Lovely setting, easy to park, but id be inclined to drive a number of miles out of my way to try somehwere else.

Lovely old pub with brand new management. Its already very nice, but they have great plans, so i look forward to another visit to see how it's coming on. Good sized room, excellent breakfast and a very good lunch. Recommended

A comfortable room. Tasty well presented food.

Lovely big room, dog friendly and great service

It's a large & (relatively) old listed building that was unused prior to the present landlord taking over 13 months ago. As such I think he is to be greatly commended for all the work he must have had to do to bring the property 'up to scratch' & to make it into a viable pub B&B enterprise. Still a work in progress though.

Basic - but a fair price

The pub is pretty run down and basic. Rooms were clean and comfortable. Breakfast was included but service was lacking. We have stayed in much nicer places for a similar price on this trip.

Comfortable and reasonable value. Nice village. Staff kept their metaphorical distance a little too much but maybe due to CoVid requirements.

Although the pandemic has caused problems there has been time to refresh paintwork, oil furniture and replace corroded fittings. Shower did not work. Bedding was good plus tea/coffee etc. This could be a repeat location with some detail care.

One night family stay with dog

Lovely old pub. which is dog friendly. Food was good. Room was big, with nice clean bedding and towels. Had a nice evening in the pub with friendly helpful staff.

Loved the history of the place. And the service was very good & the dog very friendly! :-)

Only stay if you must

At last minute no meals being served (this is after checking before booking and being told yes). Previous booking had to be cancelled after being advised kitchen not operating. Hopefully new management will give this place an overhaul - it’s v tired but then you get what you pay!!

Welcoming country pub.

Checked in after 8pm into this welcoming country pub.Could of joined the evening dinners as the food looked lovely in the bar.Lovely character room,plenty of space and modern bathroom.Nice fry upmin the morning all freshly cooked.

Excellent service and very friendly Environment.

We only had 1 issue during the night, but I was dealt with in the morning. Strongly recommend and very good price. Top tip, close the blinds first before you shower :). Clean and well presented.

Unfortunately our 1st night was disturbed by the constant humming of the cooler mechanism in the cellar. When mentioned they immediately arranged for the system to be switched off overnight, which solved the problem. The management and staff couldn’t have been more helpful. Very pleasant stay with good breakfast.

Received an email to say no chief or cooked breakfast so disappointed . Mattress on left side was in poor condition as every movement caused the springs to move and ping. So sleep was difficult and uncomfortable.service was good and the one morning cooked breakfast available it was good.

In a quiet location, the family room for a family of 4 is bigger than we expected. Staff are nice and pleasing. Plenty of parking space.

Lovely village inn

Our stay at the Talbot was excellent, in a very pretty village, easy access to surrounding area. Staff were lovely and very helpful. Breakfast was excellent. Well worth a visit.

Disappointing. Average pub with rooms.

Not a cheap stay, but the room was a little shabby and unwelcoming. All photos were of bathrooms with a bath tub, but we had only a weak shower that couldn't keep a constant temperature. Advertised as having a restaurant, but we arrived (with kids) just after 8.30pm to be told the kitchen had closed. On the positive side, breakfast was very good.

Good size room with very good english breakfast..

Clean and comfortable, the chef was on holiday so there was no cooked breakfast and the breakfast provided was basic to say the least and was not a continental breakfast. That’s the only thing I would comment on, otherwise a good accommodation.

we have stayed at The Talbot twice now and I would definitely recommend it, they are not serving dinner at the moment but they booked us a table at the Cricketers a short drive away, where we had a lovely meal.

Noisy room, above cooling system

Had a brilliant stay at this hotel, staff are very friendly and helpful and the food was delicious! Would highly recommend this hotel!

Booked to stay at this pub at the very last minute and it was exactly what we were looking for. The owners were great and couldn't do enough to make sure we enjoyed our stay, we arrived late after the kitchen should have closed, but the chef still cooked us a hot meal. The rooms were clean with good facilities, for coffee drinkers it's a rare treat to have a cafetière in the room and our breakfasts were just the ticket too. A great little last minute find.

Room was nice but a little nousy with doors and being close to the road.

Disliked the late check -in ( 5.00 pm ) as this is the time the bar opens and the regular locals turn up. This causes delay and confusion whilst checking in. The hosts were friendly and very helpful even carrying my bags to the room. The evening food was excellent and the breakfast very good. The room and en-suite were of a good standard with good sized flatscreen TV, toiletries and tea and coffee facilities. Overall, my stay was s pleasant one and good value for money. I would stay again and reccomend this place to others.

Lovely country Inn

Welcoming country Inn, Friendly staff, Lovely breakfast. I had a good size room and a generous bathroom with lots of towels.

Good value room, nice and warm , everything you need is there. Lots of hot water. Bed slightly uncomfortable, but then your own bed is always the most comfortable! We were visiting friends nearby, so didn’t have any meals at pub, or breakfast. Would stay again X

All the staff and everyone we met were super friendly. The suite we stayed in had plenty of room and what looked like a brand new bathroom. Breakfast in the morning, though not hot (as the kitchen was closed during our stay), was excellent. Really nice place in general.

Lovely Country Pub

We enjoyed a lovely spacious room at a very reasonable price. The restaurant wasn't open at the time but were referred to their sister hotel, The Cricketer. The food there was excellent.

Perfect stay over the weekend.

My boyfriend and I stayed over the weekend to visit our family. We arrived later in the evening but we still got dinner which was excellent. Freshly cooked and very good quality. They also have a great choice of wine. All the staff were friendly, we were talking to the owners and the chef also took time to talk to us on the next day. Great guy! Breakfast was also very nice, freshly cooked and one of the best full English breakfasts I've ever had. The room was clean and cosy with some modern elements as well. I can really recommend The Talbot, it exceeded our expectations.

Friendly and Well Equipped Accommodation

Overall we had an adequate visit with some issues that were mostly down to the timing of our stay. The pub has a great atmosphere and the staff were friendly. The family suite was well equipped and comfy. It was very hot on the day of our arrival and as a concequence the rooms were very hot too and affected everyone’s sleep. This was not helped by the suite being at the top of the building. Opening windows and adding fans prior to guests arriving would have helped hugely. We also had unknowingly booked on the day of a music/beer festival. Whilst this is usually something we would have loved the noise outside the pub went on until after 1am. The breakfast was good and very tasty but the breakfast room was littered with half drunk pint glasses and the chef sat down adjacent to us is the breakfast room texting and watching the TV until the next guests arrived. We think that on the whole this is a good accommodation option and think most of our issues to be down to the timing of our visit.

Talbot hotel

What a fantastic place. Great food great people and impeccable service. From the moment we arrived the staff went above and beyond to ensure our comfort and needs were met. The room was awesome and the bed? Best nights rest in a very long time. To all the staff at the Talbot thankyou it was indeed a pleasure.

We had a really good stay staff were really friendly couldn't do enough for you we arrived on the afternoon they had finished serving lunches but went out of there way and made us some lunch. Bedroom was lovely had a good night's sleep really enjoyed it would definitely go back.

Nights at the Talbot

I stayed a couple of nights here. Nothing to write home about. Its an average hotel (B+B) with honest food and facilities.

Fantastic accommodating staff

This is a lovely B & B with exceptional staff and management, located in a lovely village. Highly recommended

Place is good shower is not brilliant but the Staff are great. Breakfast was not very good. But the service is excellent.

A rare gem!

I cannot praise the new proprietors Gareth and Jo enough. Their welcoming personalities put me at ease immediately and when I returned late evening I was made to feel so welcome in a, rare these days, local ‘pub’ with the loveliest characters from the village. When a single woman it is not always comfortable in such an environment but I haven’t enjoyed an evening so much in years! Hugo the chef ( what a character!) was also so welcoming and friendly. I can’t wait to go back to this gem of a place!

Dismal

It's shabby and down at heel. By 8 o'clock on a Saturday night there were only 5 customers in the bar. I think that says it all.

Weekend stay

Lovely accommodation with really friendly, helpful staff. Very good size room with everything required for a comfortable stay. Excellent breakfast each morning and free parking. Couldn't have asked for more.

Great pub very convenient

Great overnight stay in Dorset. Comfortable spacious room plenty of tea and coffee and lovely little balcony, wifi very good but no phone signal. Only downside no signal on TV and limited choice of places to eat on a Sunday evening.

Great place

Stayed here Saturday night, helpful staff and even though no food being served, made me a delishous BLT sandwich, after settling in went to bar, and spent a pleasant couple of hours chatting to staff, great whisky's and would recommend to others, super English breakfast next morning, will be even better if evening meals were available,

Pleasantly Surprised

Much better than I have come to expect from a b&b in a pub. Excellent size room and bathroom, clean, and a very good, well stocked, tea and coffee box selection.
