Excellent spot for exploring Winchester and Downs
Lovely place and enjoyed the restaurant food and drink at lunch and for dinner. The burger and pork chop were particularly good. The rooms are good but I would say it's function over comfort. Beds were fine just a little sparce and nothing comfy to sit on apart from the bed really. So not a room to stay for a bit of a pamper stay ...but great if you are out and about. Amenities all present and correct and liked the DAB radio touch
Very clean and lovely staff , couldn’t do enough for you from bar man to waitress. Highly recommend 👌
Fabulous
Just lovely. Staff are so helpful and friendly, room was comfy and clean and we also had a great meal.
Review
Wonderful place to stay, comfortable beds, nice decor, well maintained and food is very good.
Full english lived up to a great breakfast.loved the cozy well equipped rooms.Would of liked a microwave in the room.Lots of outdoor space for the rooms which would be great in the summertime.Modern and very clean room.Excellent staff a shout out to the cleaning lady who provided excellent customer service. We will be back . microwv.
The accommodation was very comfortable with very large comfy bed Beautifully decorated and lovely bathroom/shower, very well equipped Breakfast first class and very friendly staff Would deftstay here again
Hard to fault this excellent place for an overnight stay. Ample parking, quiet location, spacious comfortable room with extensive amenities, including fresh milk in fridge for tea/coffee. Pleasant staff and prompt service in restaurant.
Great dinner and breakfast, room acceptable if a little tired.
Wonderfully themed place with great service.
What a great place! Themed with Horses! Who knew? Fantastic service and very excellent food, both dinner (evening) and the breakfast. Clean rooms, comfortable and a good shower. The dinner service team were great, the place gets quite busy (not surprised) and the hosts were still very attentive and efficient to serve the table. Overall a very nice place to stay and a thankyou to Belle (waitress) for the service we received.
Room 2 smelt damp but easily solved by opening the windows to air off. Overall lovely staff, excellent food and excellent communication. I would definitely stay again.
Comfortable, welcoming and a little different.
A really nice place to stay, proving that quirky doesn’t have to be weird. Comfortable bed, welcoming team, great food (perfect fish pie) served with a smile by Jess 😊
This was the absolute cutest place. It’s a hidden gem. Everyone was kind and helpful.
It was really nice place to stay.
Really nice stay and a decent breakfast.
I was expecting an easy walk to town it was a 15 min car ride. The evening meal was expensive terrible service and bad food
Overnight stay to meet up with my brothers and friends inn Wichester.
A atmosphere to be enjoyed
A nice stop off for the evening before traveling in to our next stop
Short break
The pictures make the room look larger than it actually is. The room had a damp issue which required a plug in air freshener to mask the smell. Food was above average price for pub food and beware service charge added even for bar drinks.
Almost perfect
The staff were all very helpful and pleasant whilst remaining professional throughout. The room was spacious and very comfortable, we had the usual tv, kettle, iron and teas and coffees but we also has a coffee pod machine, with a selection of pods, an iron and ironing board and a digital radio. The Sunday carvery was very tasty and good portions. My only complaint would be the full English breakfast which was very bland and nothing to write home about, overall it was an excellent experience and we will be staying there again.
Relaxed and friendly
The Running Horse is nestled in a forest area and is relaxing and quiet. The staff were all friendly and helpful. The room was modern and the bed was comfortable. Lots of power outlets in the room. The restaurant menu was very extensive and breakfast was comprehensive. I would definitely stay there again next time I'm in the area.
COuntry pub hotel near Winchester.
A quirky hotel with cabins/chalet in beer garden. Very welcoming to dogs, not that i have one. Staff very polite and customer focused.
All very good, roomclean and serviced daily, meals plenty of choice.
A favorite place but..
A hotel and restaraunt where we love to stay. Great food and terrific staff. This visit spoiled by the room allocated - #6 - located on a corner with frequent periods of outside noise in the evening and obstructed access in the morning.
Style was really nice and it was silent and dark at night. Great attached pub.
Really enjoyed our stay here. Very comfortable room, tasty food, good service and good value for money.
We liked the "cabin' style room. There was a large dent in the wall, i assume caused by the door handle.
Great rooms outside a great gastropub
Stable rooms recently done outside a wonderful pub including great cooked breakfast. Also had a burger for dinner which was delicious!
Good restaurant, details missing in rooms
Good food, good choice of beer, easy to park. My room didn't have any toilet paper and there wasn't any no tea mugs.
Its a shame our stay in this unique hotel was spoilt by a heating issue and amateur service. Instead of informing us of a problem with the heating upon check in, we were expected to accept a noisy fan heater blasting hot air like a hairdryer for the night. When it was brought to the attention of the staff, i expected a quick response but nothing happened for over an hour with sub zero temperatures outside. The staff were very dismissive of the issue and thought it was perfectly acceptable. Although they did source a portable heater and extra duvet while we had dinner, it would have been courteous to know what was happening. Service at breakfast was painfully slow and all the staff showed no interest in rectifying the situation. We have stayed in other hotels within the chain and professionally trained many staff with the hospitality industry, I am very disappointed with the level of service at The Running Horse.
Perfect for an overnight stay centre to Heathrow. Great friendly staff
Overall this was a lovely stay away from my home in a built up environment, the pub is set in a lovely area and not a sound could be heard apart from the local wildlife. We had a very welcoming reception from all staff members and the atmosphere was very friendly The food was fantastic but the accommodation let it down! We paid £220 for a king size but unfortunately in my mind it wasn’t very king size!!! The room was very small and nothing special about it especially considering the amount that was charged. Also the price did not include breakfast !!! In my experience this should have been a maximum £150 per night plus breakfast .
Lovely comfy stay.
Had a good two night stay, the room was very comfy with a nice selection of hot drinks available, the room was lovely and warm as the heating was on,the bathroom was a good size with a great shower,I loved the toiletries,it was a well thought out room for a comfortable stay. We ate only one night in the restaurant it had a good menu and was very nice,it was busy due to the time of year but the staff were pleasant and coped well, enjoyed our stay.
A lovely experience. Fantastic food and comfy beds, would definitely recommend.
A country gem……
We had a short 1 night stay at this Wonderful pub. Great location in a rural village but only 10 mins drive to Winchester. We only regret our stay was not longer and we will be back. Lovely breakfast choices and a truly lovely welcome.
Super Cute Countryside stay
It's such a cute place, I love going here, it was my second stay and im going back again in a couple of weeks. Really nice comfortable place,
Nice Place
Stayed here before a lovely place. Food delightful but table service was slow
Running Horse
Beautiful venue with wonderful staff
well worth consideration as a overnight stay
don't bother booking some faceless hotel in the area if you have the option of staying at the Running horse. well worth your money. Shame we didn't arrive early enough to taste the evening meals on offer.
Great place to stay
Just lovely
Loved this place! Very nice and up to date. The pub was amazing (food, atmosphere.) Modern room was comfortable. Will stay again.
Fab place
Fab property. Comfy lovely bed and fab shower. Lovely staff
I had a great experience during my stay at The Running Horse. The staff were more than helpful with everything, the food at the pub was great, and the room was exactly what I needed. My only issue was the struggle to get an Uber from the location, given its location (not an issue for most people who have vehicles). I'd absolutely stay here again given my great experience.
The fire alarm went of and woke us at 7am on sunday morning leaving us exhausted having got in at 12.30,no apology was made by staff, just family told staff had set it off as they came into work,Breakfast took nearly an hour to be served from being ordered as their ipad didnt upload the order. Also they didnt have much for self service ,despite an hour left of breakfast service,1 croissant was the only continental item on the breakfast table range.
Absolutely loved concept & way rooms presented. Winners Paddock was genius & would recommend to any family group.
Very warm and helpful welcome. Great atmosphere and good food
Loved the quirky horse themed character of the hotel. The breakfast is Hugh and beautifully cooked
Fabulous character filled pub with interesting accommodation. However we had a four night stay and only had our room serviced once in that time.
Lovely property, with theme & charming staff
Delightful 😊
Delightful room. Great location in a pleasent village just outside of Winchester. Friendly, helpful, staff. Dog Friendly. Well kept real ale. Clean and tidy. A minor point, but the bathroom extractor wasn't working and the dust needed vacuuming off it. Would stay again.
Amazing place food great.
Over effusive waitress, appeared to lack sincerity. Loved our room, great dinner. Surprised that our hospitality tray was not topped up and bed not made. However we loved our stay and looked forward to returning
Fabulous pub. Great room. Staff perfect.amazing breakfast.
Room was excellent with comfortable bed and good provisions. Bath was badly located and difficult to use as a bath rather than a shower. Food (dinner) was average for the price, beer good.
Fantastic property with friendly helpful staff. Great secluded location but close enough to the town center. The restraunt is great food and a nice outside area to socialise.
+ve Bed very comfortable. Very helpful staff. -ve some areas of room not clean - dust on carpet in corners, very small amount of toilet roll and no spare, in one room only one cup and no biscuits as in other rooms.
Quite area.
Nice stay. Beautiful nature and clean air for a Londoner. Bed was comfortable, nice liquid soap and shampoo, unfortunately the conditioner was almost empty. Internet did not work all the time, but managed to do what I needed. It
Amazing
Amazing friendly staff. Very comfy bed. Very easy to get to room. Would have been nice to have the room numbers on the doors but thats minor. Will happily come back again
We’ll maintained property that looks like it was recently updated. A traditional English pub serving excellent food. We really enjoyed our stay.
Lovely GastroPub outside Winchester, well worth a visit
Great potential, disappointing experience. Our evening meal didn’t arrive, we asked about the food after 45 mins, and then again after another 45 mins, when they realised the order hadn’t gone through. Young staff not trained, no table system or else it would have been noticed, there was sufficient staff for covers. Surprised the Manager did not apologise for the error but left it to a young member of staff to do so, would have expected him to have acknowledged the error. Nice decor and ambiance, plenty of potential if the service element is sorted. Lighting in bedrooms is poor and needs improving.
Short break
Overall a nice stay.Staff polite and helpful.Bed comfortable and room was clean apart from a dust harbouring lampshade above the bed and a stained carpet caused by previous cleaning. In our room (7) there wasnt any type of hand rail on or near the bath which should be considered as I was told the whole place was being closed for a total make over very shortly also handle required to assist in closing door when leaving the bathroom.Partly broken hot water machine and coffee hotplate I expect will be replaced during the refit
Unfortunately this property really let is down. The bar closed earlier than advertised. We were told that there sre no tables to have a drink St inside, so would have to sit outside, despite having a table booked for dinner The room was in a bad state of repair. The bath tub had a massive crack and leak in it and I cut my Leg on the sharp crack. I showed the person? Manager? And he said, oh yes, thats not very good is it. We are closing next week for a refurb! Sorry about that. Are you ready foe your bill?!!! The room smelt musty, and it just felt like you paid your money, give. Your key - then thats it - any problems - We don't want to know. Very disappointed and i wouldnt book again or recommend unfortunately
Stayed one night as a Mother's Day treat from my daughter. We really enjoyed our stay.. nice , comfortable warm room albeit a bit snug.. but no problem for a short stay. Had a lovely meal in the cosy dining room.. I had the fish pie which was excellent... really tasty and lovely and hot! Good breakfast .. nice quality croissant. Staff very helpful too. All in all an excellent short stay and would return again.
A three night stay
Good clean room, although there were some works being done in the adjacent woodland with much noise and some smoke during the daytime. I assume that this was a short term activity. The contractors were parked in the car park and this was not mentioned during our stay and no apology given, although the impact was minimal for us. The decking outside the rooms was covered with a waterproof sheet meaning water pooled - again minimal impact. We did not eat here as the food was slightly expensive, although we did have a couple of drinks - again slightly on the pricey side. The rooms are outdoors with a decked walkway to the bar and breakfast area. The bed was comfortable, and the shower and toiletries provided excellent. The breakfast was very good - we did not try the cooked options however. The hot water dispenser needs a sign showing how to operate because more than one person got confused. It was only straightforward once you had been told. Limited choice of breakfast cereals, but excellent bread for toast. Limited choice of jams. Good range of yoghurts and fruit. Coffee good. The hotel is in a nice location, although public transport into Winchester from just outside is quite limited - if you want to return in the afternoon, be prepared to do some walking. Driving into Winchester takes about 15 minutes.
Perfect stop for a weekend away, lovely rooms, very clean, friendly staff and great food.
Nice big room, well heated with everything we needed. We had dinner one night which was fab and the continental breakfast more than adequate. Only issue was the online checkout but there was a fast help from the young man on duty.
Lovely facilities and very accommodating and friendly staff ! Will definitely visit again !!!
Half way
Lovely friendly staff and overall a good nights sleep
Clean room and good pub food.
Good location to visit Winchester. Evening food was good and service was good. Breakfast was ok. We didn’t go for the cooked option as that was extra, but lack of marmalade was disappointing.
Good place to crash for the night but rooms were a little tired and the twin room we stayed in one of the mattresses you could feel the springs through. The cooked breakfast we paid for was good and staff were very friendly.
Lovely weekend break.
Lovely pub with excellent rooms, bed very comfortable. Staff really helpful. Only downside was the food which was expensive for what it was. Breakfast was a let down as continental included in price but consisted of croissants, pain chocolate, and toast with a variety of spreads, yoghurt and a bowl of fruit, i was expecting continental to include a selection of cold meats and cheese as you get in the continent.
Excellent Stay
The Running Horse was lovely. Rooms are modern & clean. We were worried that it would be noisy as the rooms were behind the pub but it was so peaceful & quiet. The staff were so friendly & helpful (10/10 for customer service). I would definitely recommend this hotel to others.
Very good
Very good stay. Only one thing to add. It was not clear that the breakfast was continental. A proper English breakfast was extra. The breakfast menus could be improved. Boiled, poached, scrambled eggs etc. May nave been available if we has asked. Excellent omelet though. We had an outside cabin/room. Very acceptable.
Nice room, not too far from the center. Bar was good and service was v good.
Lovely place. Would have liked to tried some cocktails but they had no ice for the duration of our stay, 3 nights.
Good food
Overall comfortable quiet place but found bed uncomfortable but did have a bad back. I’m used to firm foam mattress. Below photo of rooms
Bar shut @ 10.30pm, slightly odd.
Lovely clean room, bed comfy, had a good choice of hot breakfast Evening meal was ok starters where good but feel there could be room for improvement with the main dishes
Very pleasant experience.
Overall a very pleasant experience. Reception staff were good and efficient. Rooms were clean and comfortable. Evening meal of roast chicken was delicious but enormous and we all struggled to finish it all. Continental Breakfast had a good selection of cereals, toast, pastries etc.
Lodge type accommodation, a little tired in places and very soft worn mattress. Staff were very pleasant, helpful, we booked dinner that was very good and excellent VFM, paid extra for a Cooke breakfast that was also excellent.
Very relaxing
What a gem of a find. We took our dog with us and it was a very pet friendly place. Our room was clean and tidy and the food in the pub was amazing. The service was very good. We will return for a second visit
A quiet place outside of town
I used this as a one night stay as part of a cycle trip. A good quiet restful stop, lovely bed and a good shower, all that I needed. It was let down for me in the evening when my previously booked table for one in the restaurant at 18:30hrs was not then available - work that one out. The only options in the bar area was a six seater table or a more suitable one which required a local being moved and then to cap it off the fish and chips was average at best. The good buffet continental breakfast though set me up for the day.
Room was good. Continental breakfast was OK
Great
Really lovely hotel
Friendly service, great setup and the fish and chips were excellent.
5 stars for my stay
5 stars for my stay, an amazing location, staff extremely helpful, great food and great accommodation. Couldn't rate this highly enough
Our room was clean with nice thick towels a good selection of teas and good bathroom products. A plentiful continental breakfast was included in the price. We liked the little courtyard with seating and plants which was available for guests to use near the accommodation.
This is a charming dining pub with rooms, and I and three friends had a delightful overnight stay here. The staff were very friendly and the food was really very good at lunch and especially at dinner. Breakfast, however, was rather disappointing - very poor coffee, and very 'bready' croissants that I think had not quite properly been fully cooked. The rooms are fine, although rather stuffy in hot weather - little ventilation (and, of course, no a/c). But overall, a charming place.
Very enjoyable stay.
A lovely find
Our first stay away from home in over a year, and it was just lovely. The general area was idyllic - quiet countryside with loads of trees, fields and birds. The room was great - nicely furnished with a modern twist, and a very comfortable bed. Even though they were practically full, it was really peaceful at night. Lastly the food was great. The roast Sunday lunch was probably the best meal of our whole trip. Breakfast was good too. Looking forward to returning.
Everything was great apart from the breakfast
Lovely place. Bedrooms comfortable. Great staff. The food very good... apart from breakfast which was poor on both days.
👍
Lovely stay, outside Winchester so depends if you want to be central. We had dinner on site, the food and service were excellent.
Work trip
Staff are extremely friendly and helpful. Nice quiet location and has everything you need.
Very Pleasant
A warm welcome, comfortable room and good food. The village location was lovely, close to Winchester and with a good local bus service.
Love it!
Lovely place, great setting, excellent food and lovely service. Emily and Sam were wonderful.
Maximum level of dirty I would accept
This was probably the maximum of dirty room I would accept without walking out, I don’t expect a hotel room to be forensically clean but the carpet in our room needs pulling up, burning and deposed of as a bio hazard! There were a few hairs in the bed and shower and sooo many cobwebs but you are in the country. We liked the good amount of hand and body wash you get, it’s nice stuff too. The milk sachets were mouldy though. Staff at dinner were overwhelmed but handled it really well, they were very nice but for the price you pay there’s a huge lack of attention to detail. I wouldn’t pay to stay here again as i think it’s al very overpriced for what it is. Food was nice but very expensive for what it is. We got a good special offer price but I’d be livid if we’d have paid anymore.
Happily surprised- amazing place and staff
Really cozy and nice place. All the staff was super friendly and helpful! The bed was amazing and the location is great for a city escape.
One night to see friend Excellent
We had a lovely night at the Running Horse. Staff were all very careful about safety measures. Our room was spotless and we had a very nice meal. There was a little confusion over breakfast but was soon sorted out, everyone is getting used to new ways of doing things. we shall return.

Lovely place to stay
Really lovely pub/restaurant/hotel.
