Very enjoyable stay
Lovely inn. Great food. Friendly service. Highly recommend a stay here.
Just perfect!
The String Of Horses was an amazing place to stay. A quietly located inn it has superbly appointed rooms - the bathroom was amazing and the bed large and so comfortable; a lively restaurant serving quality high food and comfortable bar with an open fireplace. Staff are friendly and provide an amazing service from front of house and throughout the bar and restaurant. The breakfast service is high quality too with lovely food prepared to order. Well worth a visit and we’ll be back 👍
Quaint country pub with rooms
Quaint country pub with rooms. The staff are really helpful and friendly. The place is very clean and looks welcoming. However the room I had was small and basic but the bed was comfy and everything worked. Nowhere to sit comfortably or even to do some work. Food is very tasty especially the evening meals. Breakfast choice very good and again delicious food well presented. Thank you.
Trip to Carlisle
Great location and lovely old pub with lots of history. Friendly staff.
First stay
Lovely very old inn. Staff were welcoming and friendly Such a comfortable peaceful nights sleep. Great place to stay for walking in the area.
String of Horses is a very nice Inn to stay at close to Hadrian's Wall. Friendly staff, good range of beers and good menu of locally sourced products
Due to road closure it was a challenge locating hotel, but the stay was well worth it. Hotel was quaint, clean and efficient. The food was great and the staff was wonderful. Sue was exceptional!
It was a delightful inn with a restaurant attached. We didn’t have to walk or drive anywhere. Beds were comfy and an easy ride to Hadrian’s Wall
A little Gem.
This was a great little find for an overnight stay. Not a lot nearby but you don’t need it. A lovely 16th century bar area with good local beers. Rooms are decorated and furnished to a high standard. The food in the restaurant was all superb as was the breakfast. Service in all areas was excellent making for a very good stay.
Excellent in every way in fact one of the best places I have stopped in. Cannot fault the place in any way just hope some big chain does not take it over. Fantastic bar restaurant and originality that is lacking in so many places.
Truly excellent stay
Very good quality food, nice atmosphere, cosy traditional pub, excellent staff. Highly recommended. I will be back again
Well outside city limits, quaint lovely hotel
Homely
Lovely hotel, very friendly and highly recommended
This property is in an old coaching inn, so it has lots of history and charm. The amenities, are great, it is clean and comfortable, and the staff are friendly and helpful. Our dinner here was wonderful. It's a very enjoyable place stay and convenient to the sites along Hadrian's Wall.
This property was a find! I was concerned driving there as it was located in the middle of nowhere and thank God for Google maps else I don't know how I would find it. But what a delight! The room was comfy. The food was great. The service was exceptional. The bar was just a lot of fun. It was very convenient to Hadrian's wall
All good . I'd use again
Absolutely brilliant!
We stayed for 2 night's from the 16th until the 18th and sue and colin certainly did well, infact very well indeed. I couldnt of asked for more. The room was amazing, the food was WOW! Sue was such a lovely lady- she couldnt do enough for you! It was the first time i took my giirfriend away :) and lets just say it was an experience we will never forget. Thanks guys. 😊
Great place.
This hotel is fantastic the staff are friendly and helpful and the food is absolutely superb. Difficult to get to because of the amount of roadworks / diversions in that area. The real problem I had was my room it was so noisy I thought I was sitting in the pool room very, very noisy. So I'd advise asking for a quiet room when you book.
Little Gem
Great Stay! Food fantastic!
Unique old-fashioned atmosphere, great beer, dinner, room a tad small but comfy, very warm personnel, great base to visit Carlisle, Hadrian’s wall and Lake district
ok for a night.
Overall the hotel was good and clean with the room comfortable with plenty of parking space. There was no food available on the Sunday night, however there were alternative options available with delivery's from pizza and other food outlets from the nearby town. If your relying on WIFI for work emails or calls don't, very much a hit and miss. The only real negative point was the shower not very good with little or limited heat and power. I may of been unlucky and other rooms may have been a lot better.
We enjoyed the atmosphere of an old fashioned village pub which we used as a base for travelling around the area and which we enjoyed coming back to for a drink in the wonderful atmospheric bar, followed by excellent cuisine served by superb staff
Really enjoyed staying at the String of horses. A*
I messed up our booking and actually arrived a week early, however the lady was amazing and took it all in her stride and found us a superb room and was really accommodating of us being the wrong day. Unfortunately we missed supper but the menu look amazing, breakfast was delicious. The String of horses is traditional but also luxury with comfy mattress, pillows and soft towels. Very generous double ended bath. Highly recommend staying here.
Very pleasant stay
Very pleasant place
This was a absolute highlight on our trip, the accommodations were great, the food was absolutely amazing as was the chef, combine that with our hosts and the locals who made you feel more than welcome. We can’t recommend this place highly enough. Thank you to all of you for your generosity.
Great place, loved the historic hotel and the owner and staff were the best.
Lovely place. Very clean, delightfully decorated rooms with a nice firm mattress. Breakfast was fantastic, i couldn't believe it was in the very reasonable price I'd paid. Would have extended my stay but alas it was fully booked
Perfect stop off
From the big smile when we checked in to the big smile when we checked out. All very good. The food and sevice for breakfast and dinner were excellent, bedroom refurberd to a high standard (including the bathroom) only point, low water pressure, all else was perfect. Will be back again.
We were only there for one night but everything was just as we wanted and needed.
Beautiful room, tastefully decorated, in a building oozing charm and history. Staff were most accommodating in regard to our needs. Would stay again for sure.
We were a bit late coming down from Kelso and it was almost dark when we got to Brampton trying to find the hotel. But after visiting most of the lanes and villages in the area, we eventually got there. Lovely old traditional Inn, friendly staff and no problem providing us with dinner though it was late by then. Food was delicious! Lovely bedroom, very comfortable bed and pillows. All very clean, and lots of newly painted areas in the property. Good choices for breakfast. Just wish checkout had been a little later as we had “lost” an hour with the clock change!
Family Studio w/Wet Room
This hotel was, in a nutshell, a wonderful place to stay. I believe that our particular room might have been the only one on the first floor and seemed to be handicap accessible. It also may have been the only room that had an exterior entrance. It had one double bed (U.S. queen), a single bed (U.S. twin), and a single fold-out futon chair. The "kitchenette" was comprised of a nice size porcelain sink, a dorm-sized fridge, a wooden counter-top with built-in drain board, a kettle with ceramic mugs & spoons, and sufficient cabinetry to store a few days worth of groceries. There was also a couch, dining table with 4 chairs, an occasional chair, several coffee and side tables, and a small wall-mounted TV. It was our first experience with a wet-room for a bathroom and we found that it was very clean and roomy. I actually much preferred it to the usual mildew infested shower stalls that many hotels have. The double-door entrance to the bathroom would make it easy to maneuver a wheelchair inside. There were only a few negatives to this room. One was that the seat-cushions and chairs needed a scrubbing as there were numerous spots and debris found on them. Also, the futon was broken and we had to prop up one end to make it lay flat. I think others have complained about the futons so it might be worth replacing these with a more useful solution. As for the breakfast, it was delicious and the service excellent. It's a beautiful place to stay and we would definitely go back!
We were disappointed with the hotel, particularly having seen great reviews before travelling. Our room was small, as was the bed. It was also very uncomfortable meaning that I slept badly for 4 nights. What disappointed us most was the food which was poorly cooked, particularly the breakfasts. It was also overpriced compared with several pubs in the area serving better food. The staff were lovely however, very friendly and helpful, as was everyone that we met in our stay in Northumberland. The area is incredibly beautiful, and historically very interesting
Comfortable 2 night stay.
Very comfortable room, friendly and helpful staff and good evening meals. However we were surprised and disappointed that the breakfast menu was limited. Porridge or cereals was an option and not part of the main menu. If you had cereals then no cooked breakfast. We had not experienced this before and felt this represented poor value for breakfast. Everything else was fine.
Lovely stay, excellent food!
Lovely traditional Inn with lots of character and charm. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The family room was a great size and beds were lovely and comfortable. Our evening meal and breakfast were excellent. If a bit more attention had been made over cleanliness it would of been a ten out of ten!
Wonderful! Rooms were nice and clean and the staff was friendly. The food was outstanding and we really enjoyed our evenings outside and also in the dart room. Beautiful place to stay.
An Inn full of character
Overall, very many plus points with one or two areas for improvement. An historic and charming inn situated in a quiet village setting. The points worthy of praise are as follows. Clean and comfortable, including a good bed. The room and en-suite were spacious. The staff were friendly and efficient; attentive but not intrusive. The Cumberland breakfast was especially good. The evening menu was simple and comprised regular pub food. Of the menu options, I can only comment on the fish and chips, which was done well. Ample parking was freely available in front and at the side of the inn. In terms of areas for improvement, the only important point would be to fit a better blind or curtain which would substantially block out the early sunlight. Other than that, there were minor issues with the WiFi but it generally worked. At points, the interior is a bit basic but for the good value price this was perhaps to be expected. The cables tacked on to the dining room ceiling detracted slightly from what was in most respects a great place to eat. Overall, I would highly recommend the String of Horses to anyone looking for a comfortable stay in a traditional setting at a very reasonable price.
Caldicott family tour
The String of Horses is a very nice, old pub and I can imagine in "normal" times would be quite a busy place; it was very quiet during our stay. The staff are excellent, very friendly and very helpful. The room was comfortable, though a little tired and, for some reason quite cold. To be fair it is summer so wouldn't expect the heating to be on and we didn't ask if it could be. Can't comment about evening meals as we are elsewhere but if the excellent breakfast is anything to go by should be fine
Lovely stopover
Lovely stay, perfect for a stop over. The studio was ideal for us, although the futon was as much use as a chocolate fireguard, it wasn't great for a small child so definitely needs addressing if the room is to sleep four. Generally everything else was comfortable, well thought out and ideal for our needs although the huge bathroom is crying out for a bath. Breakfast was great and our evening meal was very good too. Would recommend.
An absolute gem
We had a delightful stay for my sister’s 60th birthday. The Inn is charming and beautifully clean and comfortable. Every detail is perfect. The cooked breakfast was the best I have ever enjoyed and the evening meals in the restaurant were excellent. The staff were friendly and welcoming. The String of Horses gets the highest possible recommendation from us. Thank you for a wonderful time
The Faugh Treasure
Just fabulous. Everything was wonderful. Sorry we could only spend 1 night there.
Aussie tourists enjoyed
Staff/hosts very friendly & helpful. Our room had lovely decor & beds comfy. Lovely walking around property. Food was tasty & well priced. Would recommend staying here.
This was a lovely place to stay.We had a warm welcome and the rooms were lovely and the bed very comfortable. We had our evening meal there and the food was excellent. Full English Breakfast next day was equally as good served with a lovely pot of fresh coffee. A great start to our road trip
This Inn was one of the highlights of my trip. It was a completely charming 17th century inn that was stunning inside and out. The room was so modern on the inside. Yet the outside and inside lobby & lounge areas were period style and so charming.
Super quaint Inn and village. Loved the vibe and the staff was outstanding. The restaurant and pub were awesome (which is especially good, since I don't know if there's anyplace else to eat in town), and breakfast was perfect! Off the beaten path in the country (but only about 8 miles from Carlisle), it was recommended by local friends, and was the best!
Loved it, made a difficult trip for me much easier.
Beautifully appointed rooms. The pub on premises Was wonderful. We loved the full breakfast in the morning.
Brilliant stay all round at the String of Horses!
Excellent for our trip - 9 of us stayed for our charity walk for Alzheimers yesterday - staff were excellent - thank you all
Great little place
Spot on!
Great modern property in a historic inn and beautiful countryside. Really nice staff and excellent food both for dinner and breakfast!
I arrived very late for check in but was accommodated very well. The room was clean and tidy and the service friendly in every respect. I only stayed one night to break up a long drive but this is a great find and it is well worth trying.
Lovely and quaint.
Everything was great. Very enjoyable stay. Food was good too.
Lovely village Inn
Very comfortable and convenient one night stop over.
Superb inn with quality accommodation. Great food and great beer.
Great location for an overnight stay
Excellent small hotel for a stay on the way south. Rooms are comfortable and food is excellent.
Comfortable ,enjoyaable stay visiting the local area.
Perfect old pub with great food.
Rural Inn
Good location for Hadrian’s Wall historic sites. Good food and friendly staff.
Charming and unique
An overnight birthday treat down memory lane as we stayed there before 25 years ago It’s charming, relaxing and quite unique
Lovely place. Would stay again.
Beyond our expectations
A lovely welcome was followed by a perfectly prepared dinner in the bar. The service was fantastic - always so friendly and checking that all was OK. The rates for accommodation and the food were really great value. We sincerely recommend this place and will most certainly return. It can be hard to find but its worth the effort.
Wondeful Countryside Inn
As sson as we arrived Colin geeted us in very friendly and cheery manner. The staff were friendly and took the time to talk to you. A very pleasant experience and if i am in this area again i would think of staying here again.
Nice Inn in a very quiet location
Stopped over for a night on our way to the Lakes District. Tricky to find Faugh with almost no signposts, and the town isn't much more than The String of Horses! The Inn itself was quaint and lovely, staff were very good, rooms were a little tired, beds soft, but overall fine. Nice breakfast, and the bar/restaurant was great for a drink and evening meal on arrival!
Comfortable place to stay.
Pleasant rural location but close to Carlisle. Modern facilities in a traditional coaching inn.
Worth visiting
The hotel was certainly off the beaten track and not too simple to find but once there, it is worth the narrow road trip. The room was fine although some drawer or shelf space would have been nice. The food was lovely and the staff friendly. A quiet place to relax or use as a base to explore the beautiful area round about..
Fine pub
I used the pub as a one night stopover on the way south from Aberdeen to the lake district. It is a very good hotel with comfortable rooms and excellent food both in the evening and at breakfast.
Perfect
Perfect countryside Inn with family friendly pub. Great staff
Country Hotel
Nice country hotel. Food excellent. Staff friendly as you would expect in this part of England.
Good stop off on way to Scotland
Disappointed with lack of wardrobe space and very flat uncomfortable pillows Other than that the food was very good and the reception we received was very friendly and helpful We would stay there again if the bed issues were resolved
Good place
Comfortable, good food and beer, friendly staff
String of Horses
A truly delightful 17th Century country Inn. My husband and I loved it. Wish we could transport it to the Scottish Highlands. Great atmosphere, lovely log fires to greet us after our cold and wet journey. The staff were most welcoming and the food was to die for. What more can I say?
Overnight business trip
Something a bit different from the usual Premier Inn . Evening food plentiful and very good quality (bit limited menu -only my opinion !) . The bar area is a proper traditional coaching inn with log fire etc . Breakfast was good quality .. Rooms clean and all the usual shampoos etc . Stayed on business and would recommend for a relaxing overnight . This is in the middle of a small village so if you want to walk out into town -best of luck !! Great quiet good quality accomodation !
Delightful old pub beautifully restored .
This is a little gem in a country village. Well run in all departments. Food excellent and delightful staff.
In the country near Carlisle
Small village inn, very clean and comfortable. Good choice of food and quite quick service.
Excellent all round
Excellent venue, comfy room , good food and very nice staff. Will go again soon.
Great Place to Stay
It was a great place to stay with helpful and supportive staff and owner
slept like a log
hotel was lovely, staff took a while to appear/respond when needed.
Nice Accommodation - Close to historic sites
We were warmly welcomed. Offered help in driving to historic sites. Dinner was great and room accommodations were adequate for our short stay. The only point of concern for us were the locking of our room. This was a bit difficult, especially if you had to make quick escape. But overall a very nice experience that we will remember!
Nice out-of-the-way stay
Our host was welcoming and accommodating. We just stayed one night at this B n' B out in a small village but it was pleasant and quiet. Breakfast was cooked to order and we had lots of choices. We would recommend it as a place to stay out of the city.
Great stay
Lovely room, great hospitality. Ideal location for walking a section of Hadrian's wall.
Coast to coast
Lovely clean tidy place staff wonderful. We were on a cycling holiday doing coast to coast. They took care of our bikes. Locking them up at night. Even lent me some tools to do a bit of maintenance
Superb country Inn
It was such a pleasant surprise to find this wonderful hotel in a small village in the north of England. The String of Horses had everything; an excellent restaurant, modernised bedrooms with ensuite, a well stocked bar with atmosphere. Huge choice at breakfast and great staff.
Delightful family inn
This place was delightful. Rooms were very clean and had personality. The folks at check-in were friendly and knowledgeable about the area. Would definitely stay here again.
Overnight stay
Nice clean inn, good food and drink. Bath water not very hot but fine for overnight stay.
Lovely Inn
Lovely and friendly Staff
Great find!
A brief overnight good service Andre welcome. Excellent food evening & breakfast.
Old Coaching Inn.
Situated in very pleasant area within easy reach of Hadrian's Wall. Good restaurant.
Great stopover for travelling
We travellef from Kent to Aberdeenshire bank holiday Friday, horrendous traffic, arrived far too late for dinner, staff couldn't have been more helpful, rustled up food and sustenance for 2 very weary people!
Water pressure and temperature not great
Wonderful Place & Wonderful Staff
Beautiful and quiet - lovely room! This was a wonderful place to stay - quiet and beautiful. The hosts were super accommodating - taking us in with a last-minute reservation at midnight. It just so happened the the Music on the Marr Music Festival was happening just down the road from here, so we got to enjoy some brilliant music. One of the staff at String of Horses did us a huge favor that made it possible for us to attend the music festival. These are the best kind of people there ever were.
Idillick
We were going to a concert at the local football club , it was the ideal location, quiet , quaint , and certainly well worth going back , owner and staff were very helpful and accommodating .
String of Horses & string of compliments
We were allowed to book in about lunch time as originally we were told 4pm which would have been a bit of a struggle as we were there for the Rod Stewart concert. We booked a hotel in Durham for our honeymoon 3 years ago,and this was a much better place altogether.Breakfast was lovely and the service was brilliant.
String of Horses Inn, Fabulous
On our arrival we were warmly welcomed, by Colin, we found the Inn, clean and tidy, and bedrooms bright and airy, loved the décor, the bar and dining room made you feel very comfortable and relaxed. So lovely we would visit again. We were travelling with family from Canada and they were very impressed.
Great hotel
Very friendly and comfortable hotel. Good food as well
A gem of a place
Wonderful place to stay. Bags of atmosphere and very helpful staff. Room was warm and well appointed, bed was comfy and wifi fast and reliable. Food was great. Pefect place to explore the countryside and Carlisle. Highly recommended.
