Beautiful location. A very informal and friendly atmosphere.
Unique, beautiful property. I was really well looked after, cakes and biscuits in the afternoon. The breakfast was amazing-couldn’t fault a thing. My room was very comfortable and had everything I needed. I would absolutely recommend a stay here and would love to return one day.
Lakeland heaven
A beautiful, secluded, charming 15th Century farmhouse with stunningviews. Delightful host, a superb breakfast and I'll definitely return.
Home from home
Very traditional 500 year old Tudor house. It’s beautiful. Has its quirks - sloping squeaky floors, uneven walls, nooks & crannies & so much history! The landlady is a fabulous baker, serving up all homemade mince pies, millionaires shortbread & a homemade bread as part of breakfast! She even makes her own jams & chutneys - I bought 2 to bring home. It’s like staying in a home from home. It’s warm, welcoming, cosy & so homely. Plenty of parking space outside, lots of wildlife roaming in the gardens & beautiful dogs in the house. Would absolutely stay again.
Outstanding views, warm welcome, well looked after
From the moment I arrived I was made to feel at home. Fresh biscuits and cake greeted me, and the room was made up every day. Breakfast was really tasty, particularly nice sausage - and an abundance of fresh juice and fresh bread. It felt like home from home, and by the end of the third night I felt I'd made a new friend. And the views of Skiddaw are amazing.
Brilliant all round. Lovely host, lovely property and amazing value! I loved the warm fire, cakes and a delicious breakfast. Highly recommend this place and will definitely be back.
Another comfortable and enjoyable stay. Thank you!
It was the most beautiful place to stay. Old worldly charm, delicious cooked breakfast and a little plate with cakes when we got back from a day out. There was a cozy open fire to sit and read by and our hostess was friendly and helpful. Would love to return one day.
A unique property, and a pleasure to stay there
Best BnB ever
It was one of the most comfortable stays I’ve ever had. From the cozy cottage to the home cooked breakfast with the stunning views of the Lake District from the garden. There were baby chickens running around and cows just over the fence. The room was comfortable and the house was very nice and warm. I could not recommend enough.
The host was very welcoming. The house and gardens were stunning and steeped in history. The breakfast was plentiful and home-cooked. We look forward to returning in the near future.
Thoroughly recommended
Stayed for a week, wish it could have been longer! Host was faultlessly polite and helpful. Wonderful accommodation, fantastic location and stunning scenery. Breakfast was so tasty, I bought some eggs to take him with me. On site dogs were well behaved and friendly. Great base for exploring the Lake District, with quick access to Keswick and surrounding area. Room was comfy, en suite was clean, and the gardens were beautiful. Will come back.
Lovely place
Host is a wonderful lady and makes you feel at home. Less than 10 minutes walk to Bassenthwaite Lake.
I wanted somewhere peaceful away from tourists and crowds and I got it. I also wanted a place that wasn't as commercialized as most other places in The Lakes, and I got it. I found, to my great delight, something largely unchanged by commercial pressure and time. Sunlit oak floors and furniture and deep plush furnishings that echoed the sounds of birds and hens running free in the sumptuous gardens that tumbled down to the view of the lake. Two old rescue dogs that minded their own business unless engaged, each seemingly unconscious of their great fortune in having been rescued by the owner, Mrs. Lockwood, who is as diligent with her visitors as she is with her beloved canines. A breakfast room that wouldn't look out of place in a period English drama, to complement the rest of the immaculately-maintained ramshackle long house that weaves and curves around entwining stairs, whose delicate scents preserve in some places the woodsmoke tang of generations of family winters around elegant fire grates. The house is unblemished and unencumbered by tasteless tat and modernity; no TV's to annoy other guests, but with quality Wi-Fi that keeps visitors connected, if they must be, in such a space of peace and quiet. It's perfect for combing quiet relaxation with the frenetic pace of Lakeside tourism.
The host was lovely and welcoming. The area was super quiet. And the private drive was available for parking car, keeping car safe. The room was clean, spacious. Walk to nearby lake in less than 10 min. Close to Keswick area. The bed was comfortable (I stayed in twin room).
Lovely cottage in a quite area, very close to lake. Thank you Karen!
Beautiful old Elizabethan farmhouse in a glorious garden.
Wonderful breakfast and a gracious host!
A beautiful property set in a beautiful location. The host was very welcoming and we enjoyed a good chat each day.
Simply wonderful and will be back. One of the highlights of our trip back home.
Such a beautiful property and home with such a warm and welcoming host :)
Had an eccentric
Wonderful, traditional B&B in a rambling, Tudor-era house; really easy to get to from the main A66. The fire was lit and Karen was feeding the chickens when I arrived. It's that kind of a place, and feels like a family home: come if you hate corporate, soulless uniformity. Beautifully maintained, extensive gardens, including a former tennis lawn. There's a footpath that leads to Bassenthwaite Lake in 10 mins, views of the surrounding hills from the house and garden, and the wonderful Karen who couldn't be kinder or more welcoming. Feeds the soul!
Gorgeous setting, but a bit remote. Nearest pub/restaurant 3 miles distant. Lovely host.
It’s my second time staying here, a fantastic character property ran by someone equally as fantastic.
A beautiful property set in a quiet location with beautiful gardens. The host was absolutely fantastic and served up an excellent breakfast.
What a fantastic place to stay! Everything about this place was just brilliant: beautiful old house and garden, sitting room for guests with open fire in the evening, great breakfast, a lovely walk down to the lake, easy to find, a short drive from Keswick, comfortable room, great host, felt welcome and at home. If I get the chance, I will be back.
Great - thank you!
Amazing stay, room was comfortable and host was very accommodating. Breakfast was great too, overall a fantastic experience thank you
Peaceful and lovely.
Beautiful cottage with a wonderful hostess. Thank you Mrs Lockwood for your hospitality and for making our weekend away that extra bit special. Highly recommend this B&B
Fantastic place!
Fantastic place. Highly recommend.
Beautiful and restful
Lovely place, amazing view, friendly host and amazing breakfast. Great value
Charming rustic cottage with amazing breakfast
We have had a wonderful 2 night stay! We were made to feel completely at home and loved the picture perfect location and the beautiful garden. We will definitely be back, thank you for your hospitality!
Wonderful property and warm hospitality with a very nice breakfast and a couple of lovely dogs :)
Just excellent
Amazing experience, lovely B&B with fantastic, welcoming host. Food was delicious, bed very comfortable. Would highly recommend.
I stayed at Powter Howe for a single night while doing some hiking. The location is blissfully quiet and away from it all even though the A66 is close by (but no sound from it). The house is a beautiful 15th century cottage with many original features including slightly uneven floors and little reading nooks. The garden is delightful. Mrs Lockwood is a wonderful host, welcoming guests personally and with great old-school hospitality and warm humour. She also makes a marvellous breakfast. There is a lovely short walk around Powter How woods from the doorstep, including a little path down to the shore of Bassenthwaite Lake, which was lovely and serene. (Ideal for a morning or evening dip!) For more challenging walks, it’s easy to access the Beckstones Gill path up to Lord’s Seat and Barf, or the forest trails of Whinlatter. There are evening meal options a short drive away in Braithwaite, including the Coledale Inn, the Royal Oak and the Ruddings. I have stayed in many venues across the Lake District over many years but I think this may be my favourite.
A sanctuary from the hustle & bustle.
A really welcoming stay in a well-maintained period property (1570s). I'm a solo traveller and found the double room spacious and comfortable. A great nights sleep, hot shower, and filling breakfast to kick-start the day. Nearby to Keswick, with a bus stop up the lane (Swan Hotel). Karen, our host, was really lovely to chat with and I'm grateful for her wonderful hospitality.
Soul Energising
A spur of the moment trip the evening before, I was welcomed by Karen, our host, and stayed an additional night because it was soul energising. A peaceful sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle, with mountain ranges to the back and a lake to the front, what's not to love!? Thank you for allowing me to stay in your home :)
Beautiful old cottage with gorgeous garden and just a short walk to the lake. Ten minutes drive from Keswick. Very comfortable and wonderful breakfast. Felt very welcomed. Room spacious with lovely view over the garden.
A little piece of heaven
This place is heaven! Our host was wonderful and we were so well looked after, we would love to visit again just to learn more about the house. Beds and pillows were comfy and the breakfast was perfect. So much effortless attention to detail.
Wonderful. Would stay again!
B &B
We really enjoyed staying here. The host was friendly and welcoming . We loved the old world style of the house . The garden and the surrounding countryside were picturesque and the lake was beautiful . I would do it again
The B&B was delightful and charming, it had so much character and the bird songs and life was heaven to hear and see. The breakfast was delicious and so well presented. The hostess and owner was so professional and welcoming and it was cozy, warm and very comfortable. Very central to get to walks, the lake and places of interest. Thoroughly enjoyed it and will be back.
Warm, Cosy, Welcoming, and Relaxing
What a wonderful stay. Powter Howe B&B is relaxing, cosy, warm, and welcoming. The views from the B&B are incredible, and the location is perfect for walking in Whinlatter Forest. There is a bus stop close by for a bus that’ll take you to Keswick in ten minutes. I felt well looked after by Karen, with many thoughtful touches, and would love to return. Thank you!
The house is 500 yrs old with so much history. The host was very helpful and interesting. Property is quite a way from town but very quiet and peaceful.
Warm and friendly welcome
Country house that you would expect it's quirks which makes it amazing. Very warm and comfortable , clean and tidy. The host makes you feel at home and ensures you want for nothing. Excellent breakfast which was ready to order. Really did enjoy my stay, but for having to cut short would of definitely enjoyed another night away from modern life.
Enjoyed my one night. Make sure you take a walk down to the lake.
Wonderful old house with real character, Karen our host always lit a fire every evening and you could sit and read and enjoy watching it. The room was spacious and the bed comfortable with great views of the surrounding countryside. The complimentary breakfast was fantastic and cooked to my preference. All in all i had a wonderful stay.
This is a beautiful home in stunning surroundings. Karen was a lovely host and made us feel at home.
Incredible host and beautiful property!
Such a lovely place! Quaint but also absolutely huge. Whilst the bed may not have been the most comfortable, the service was absolutely exceptional. I made a mistake with my booking and selected the wrong date, but Karen was so accommodating and moved it for me with no hassle and no extra cost. She was incredibly friendly and made me an absolutely beautiful breakfast. Nothing was too much of an ask for her, and she even left out tea-making bits along with a little plate with cakes on it for me. Would absolutely recommend!!
We had a wonderful stay. Tea and cake when we arrived, followed by a great walk. The room was immaculate and an excellent breakfast .
A Step Back in Time
This lovely OLD home is situated in a quiet area of Thornthwaite, about 4 miles from Keswick. Our hostess, Karen, was lovely and made us breakfast to order each morning. Our upstairs twin room boasted original wood flooring from the 17th century. The location served as a good starting point for our day trips to Buttermere (take the bus from Keswick!) and Windermere. The wooded trail leading to the lake makes for a beautiful stroll, and the lovely grounds of Powter Howe are beautifully green and well cared for. A good value and a good lesson in history.
The hospitality was amazing and the view is amazing around the property. Its gives you a very pleasant experience. Do visit th lake near by its seren!!
Lovely host very welcoming , exceeded all my needs love the surroundings
Karen was the perfect host, clean, tidy, friendly, more like a home then a B and B, coming back next year for a week with a friend, nice and quiet, beautiful grounds with a view of Blencathra to die for, throughly recommend this B and B to anyone, a bit of a walk to the bus stop but still worth it, a pub at the top of the lane called the Swan House if you want food, home cooked breakfast, as I have said, more of a home than a b and b
A gem in beautiful surroundings. Clean and well-kept and a lovely breakfast.
Beautiful rooms and excellent host.
Absolutely love Powter Howe B & B, super host, beautifully clean and very comfortable. Would definitely go there again!
Over night stay
I was really happy with my visit to Powter Howe, proprietor, was so nice and nothing was to much bother, the breakfast was the best I had had in ages and the accomodation was good, thanks very much for an enjoyable stay and when next back in the north lakes will use again
Beechwood House
This was a little hard to find but nice to stay at. The view is beautiful. The gardens right out front are lovely. Our room was comfortable and even had a window seat to watch the birds at the bird feeder and relax. The home has parts that were built in the 1600"s so very interesting to see all the details. You do have to duck a lot if you're tall like my husband (6'4") The stairs are narrow, but part of the charm of such an older place. Our hostess was very accommodating, she even lit a fire for us in the sitting room. It was raining so felt really nice.Lots of interesting details in the house and beautiful dishes with our breakfast.
This is a unique Tudor andGeorgian farm house. Quirky and fascinating. Lady in charge does everything to make life good. Breakfasts superb.
Powter Howe
Very pleasant and helpful host. Comfortable room. Good food. Great views.
We had an excellent five days here. The breakfast was braw and the wee touch of putting out biscuits/cake with milk for the room at the end of the afternoon was lovely. Nae tv, just good old fashioned rustic accommodation. If you like all the mod cons then forget it. If you like a cottage with really thick walls and is steeped in history back to Tudor times, which hits you as soon as you walk in the door, that’s also in a safe friendly environment then this cottage will suit. Karen the host is lovely and very knowledgeable.
The service was above and beyond the call of duty. Very pleased.
Lovely period home with a delightful host. Made us feel very welcome, and had good advice for dinner options in the area. Communal breakfast table is a nice touch; opportunity to interact with other guests.
It is exactly as the pictures, so as long as you check the details before you bookall will be well.
Wonderful host. Really enjoyed my 1 night stay. Will look to return very soon.
Lovely Tudor B&B
The most beautiful place we stayed during our trip to the Lake District and Scotland. It is gorgeous. The grounds are beautiful and the place so historic and lovely. And Karen is so generous and hospitable. We also liked petting Alfie, the rescue dog, when we met him outdoors!
If you love accommodation with a sense of history, this is a gem. Parts are centuries old but now with modern facilities. The setting is gorgeous and the hosts charming. This is an excellent base for seeing the whole of the Lake District. Keswick is a short drive with plenty of eating options but without the intense crowds found in Windermere.
It was really good stay! 10/10
We loved our stay! Thanks again for having us !
Charming period property boasting an open fireplace, spacious bedrooms and bathroom. Comfortable accommodation and wonderful view's down to the lake. Hearty breakfast every morning and cakes in the evening. If youre looking for peace and quiet surrounded by the great outdoors, but also within 5 miles of Keswick this is well worth considering. I was well looked after during my stay .

A great place to stay
A beautiful location, very peaceful and a welcoming host who was very attentive. A lovely spacious bedroom, great bathroom. Breakfast was substantial and I enjoyed the short walk down to the lake, along with the gardens which added to the vibe, along with the hens! Thanks again for a wonderful stay.
