Huge positives: beautiful location, superb views, lovely house, very clean room in very good condition, excellent shower/en suite in very good condition, good breakfast. All deserving of a nine out of ten rating. BUT: we were put on edge by the house rules. Given that this is an expensive B&B we would not expect to be on edge! Different terms were emailed to us after booking. Tight timing/regimented breakfast [8.30 - 9.00]. Room cleaning at certain times - or you miss it! Early check out with surcharges if you were even a little delayed in departure. The negatives brought down our rating - without the negatives the ratings should be 9/10 [although an expensive B&B].

Avoid this place.

At GBP200 per night, this place should be avoided. Bed uncomfortable, location inconvenient but the main issue is the stupid rules they impose (not mentioned at the time the property was booked, I might add). Breakfast only served within a 30 minute window (0830-0900) on weekdays and 45 minutes on weekends (0830-0915). Takeaway food is totally forbidden on the premises (penalties and expulsion threatened). Yet they don't offer food themselves after breakfast. They do offer to serve you a drink from the bar but you have to ring a number as the place isn't staffed most of the time. These people should not be hospitality sector operators. On the plus side, bathroom great, wifi decent but it should only be used as a last resort. Definitely not wheelchair friendly for those that need that.

Lovely place

Been before, came back.. very nice rooms, with fresh cake provided in your room each day. We were in the annex, which has it's own lounge - very nice. Walks to Wray Castle and up onto the hills right outside the door, with details of several walks provided in the hotel. More breakfast than I could eat, really recommend the cumbrian breakfast though..

Mmm it was alright ....

The bed was the most uncomfortable bed I have ever NOT slept in, as I didn’t sleep due to the bed. Place is clean, breakfast was alright - but I don’t think it was 5* but then again sleep is a massive thing for me.

Beautiful B&B with access to the fells

We had a fantastic stay in Nanny Brow. We stayed in the Whitwell suite which was very comfortable and beautifully furnished, and had great views of the Brathay Valley. The house itself is lovely and set in beautiful gardens. The breakfast was delicious and the staff are very friendly and helpful. Nanny Brow is well situated for walkers and there is a nice walk into Ambleside from the house. There are also plenty of great restaurants nearby and Sue, when we booked, very helpfully provided a list of recommended places to eat. This definitely was a luxurious experience.

Nice hotel in a tranquil environment.

5 minutes drive to Ambleside Town Centre. Friendly and helpful staff. Starting point for a walk to the surrounding mountains with stunning views of tarns and fells which you should not miss. They provide clear direction and instruction for the walks so just ask. Nice mountain and river view from the hotel room. Lovely daily cakes from the hotel. Breakfast is excellent. Convenient location as a base to explore the lake district. Would definitely recommend!

Superb stay in a beautiful hotel

Beautiful location, wonderful room with absolutely stunning views (Brathay Junior Suite), spotlessly clean with fresh cakes daily and selection of specialty teas. Large, wonderfully presented en-suite shower room with wonderfully powerful shower. Friendly animals and even friendlier staff, with nothing too much trouble. Breakfasts were simply wonderful — amazing cooked breakfasts, or scotch pancakes/porridge/scrambled egg with smoked salmon etc, selection of cereals, a huge bowl of the tastiest fruit salad. We would both love to return here.

Amazing 5*

My husband and I stayed at Nanny Brow for 2 nights in July. We stayed in the Loweswater suite and it was perfect. It was very clean and well designed. The breakfast was perfect with buffet style and full breakfast available. All food was top quality as was the service we received. The bonus was that we had fresh baked cake everyday of our stay. I can not fault this hotel. If you go here you will not be disappointed.

Wonderful old hotel

Everything was excellent. Freshed cooked breakfast to order. Two small concerns. No elevator so be sure to request a first floor room if walking up stairs is a problem. Also the Nanny Brow does not have a restaaurant so all other meals must be taken elsewhere. However, there is so much to see and do in the lake district, we were always outside anyway.

Great friendly hotel in a great location.

A friendly welcome greets you at the hotel. Everything is explained about the hotel and puts all worries at ease. The room we stayed in had great views down the valley and was very spacious, fresh cake each day in the room was a very nice touch. Bathroom was very well presented and shower was very refreshing. They have a book in the main lounge with plenty of walks around the area with detailed instructions making them easy to follow. With access from the back of the hotel straight onto several walks made the whole experience very stress free with it being our first time visiting the lakes and wanting to do several walks. Breakfast was lovely each day with plenty of choice. It is easy to get into Ambleside which has plenty of places to eat, Nanny Brow send you a great list of restaurants they recommend, which has a variety of options. I would definitely stay at Nanny Brow again and would recommend it to anyone.

Wonderful 'family-feel' hotel

We stayed for two nights for my boyfriend's birthday - the hotel itself is beautiful, as are it's surroundings. The welcome was warm and the room was very clean and beautifully decorated. All the staff couldn't do enough for us - homemade cakes were left for us each day, drinks served on request and anything we asked for was attended to with no problems at all. Although the weather wasn't great, the lounge area of the hotel meant we were never bored. Breakfast was lovely. We will definitely be returning!

Idillic!

From minute one we loved our stay. As soon as we arrived we were met at the door by the lovely Sue who owns Nanny Brow and her two gorgeous collie dogs. Sue gave us a full run down of what to expect from our stay, places to visit, places to eat and so much more. We were then shown to our room. We stayed in the room called 'Lingmoor', this didn't disappoint, the room was quite large, very comfortable with plenty of space, kettle and cups, a full array of tea blend choices and coffee too, bedside tables, good sized wardrobe and bureau and a table and chairs situated in the bay window aperture overlooking the beautiful countryside with freshly made Lemon Drizzle cake waiting for us on the table!.. heaven!! We had a massive En Suite with double sinks AND shower, all very well presented throughout. breakfast was well cooked to your exact specification, in whatever combination, not just a load of food under hot lamps. The staff were excellent and very polite too. Sue drafted us up a planner for one of our days to help with the sight seeing which was invaluable! As we aren't hardcore walkers we drove to many different places, like Keswick, Coniston, Grasmere, Tarn Hows, Kirkstone pass, Ullswater, Pooley Bridge and many, many more and took it all in with stopovers. Her planner saved us a lot of time and helped us to see much more than if we had just gone on a mystery tour! We would not hesitate to go back and would thoroughly endorse Nanny Brow to anyone staying in the Lakes.

Nanny Brow an outstanding stay.

Every element of our stay was excellent, we were arriving late, not a problem, breakfast was excellent quality, the house has been renovated to an outstanding level and is located in a breath taking location. The care and respect shown in renovating the house is extended to the customers. Little gestures like letting us use the room for longer and providing a sandwich as I wasn't able to make breakfast gave us faith that excellent customer service is alive and kicking at Nanny Brow.

Elegant, comfortable hotel.

The hotel is very comfortable with large and elegantly furnished public rooms. The staff were friendly and helpful and the breakfasts were of outstanding quality. Furthermore, the hotel has a beautiful view of some the Lake District mountains. The weather was so good that we were able to savour these views from the comfort of the hotel's terrace garden. The setting was very peaceful too. We stayed in one of the lowest cost rooms (Rydal) and found it to be comfortable with a spacious modern bathroom. Each day there were complimentary slices of fresh home-made cake in our room. Wi-Fi was reliably available in our bedroom and the public rooms.

A restful break in the Lakes

The accommodation is in a beautiful situation and is a well preserved arts and crafts gem. The room - listed as a suite, was clean and comfortable with a well stocked tea/coffee tray, complete with home made cakes. The breakfast is served early and for only a limited time - 8.30 until 9.15. Practically, it is a 30 minute walk (8 minute drive) into Ambleside for many good restaurants and bars. Rather pricey for a B&B.

Fantastic breakfast

This is a very upmarket hotel/B+B. The highlight of the place (apart from the gorgeous countryside) was the excellent breakfast. We stayed for five nights and the food was consistently excellent. Don't miss the home-made jams and marmalade. We were also treated to home-made cake in our room in the evenings. Very naughty but after a day's walking - nice! A downside for some is the distance from town. It is about a mile and a half to walk, and with the local beer as good as it is the car is not an option. However it is also peaceful and the place is set in lovely grounds. All in all worth the extra cost to stay here.

My husband and I stayed at Nanny Brow for our 20th anniversary and already plan to return. Nanny Brow is set in such a beautiful location, with stunning views and even a direct walk from the hotel grounds, up to the top of Loughrigg Fell (for those inclined to hill walking). The hotel itself is of an amazing standard, rustic and homely, but at the same time of a very high standard. We stayed in the Buttermere suite, which was very comfortable and luxurious. Susan and all of the staff are lovely; very friendly and always happy to help. We very much look forward to our return visit.
