Very nice hotel, a little dated in places. Food excellent if a little pricey.
We were totally blown away by the whole experience. Ultimately staff were brilliant The hotel was beautiful. The food was excellent. Accompanied by excellent accommodation all excellent
This is a beautiful national trust owned country house hotel, with lovely comfortable rooms, gorgeous gardens, a fantastic restaurant, and wonderful staff, providing friendly & attentive service. It’s also really handy for the York city centre by taxi (around £10 each way with the Drive app) and, if you’re going for the races, the racecourse is actually walkable from the hotel. It has to be acknowledged that Middlethorpe Hall is a little on the expensive side, but it is worth every penny. By the way, a great restaurant tip for the city centre is Rustique - a brilliant French bistro. If you loved the sadly gone Sharrow Bay, in its heyday, as I did, then Middlethorpe Hall lives up to that. We had plans in York for our first night, but on our second night we ate in the hotel’s restaurant, and the food is simply amazing. I don’t think they have a Michelin star - not that I checked - but they certainly deserve one. Middlethorpe Hall has to be the quintessential country house hotel experience in Britain today, and we will definitely be returning. Thank you to all the staff, for making our stay so delightful.
Nice
Lovely hotel with lots of parking. I had a great spa treatment. The staff were helpful and approachable. The room was a good size with plenty of towels and toiletries. The room it was a little too warm for me during the night though. The only downside was a few noisy people at breakfast who need to learn to moderate their voices and the smallest serving of scrambled eggs with salmon I have ever had in a hotel or restaurant!
We were a kate check-in and only stayed one night so didn't get the chance to sample the gardens, restaurant or spa. Staff were very friendly and helpful, rooms warm with huge feather pillows. We'll be back to have a proper stay!
Middlethorpe Hall is a beautiful property. The staff there are exceptionally lovely and we were made to feel so welcome. There was so much character and original features which feels like the antithesis to other bland hotels.
Beautiful gardens behind the hotel you could walk through. Room was nicely decorated. Breakfast was excellent
Beautiful property. Lovely staff. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay
We loved our stay in this beautiful property. We had two breakfasts and one dinner on site and they were wonderful, both the food and the top notch service. All the staff we encountered were lovely as well!
This was my second stay at Middlethorpe Hall. The staff are amazing and the grounds are breathtaking. Suggest that irons and ironing boards be put in the room and supply guests with hair conditioner. I called down for hair conditioner and was told that the shampoo was conditioning shampoo but I could buy a small bottle for an additional charge.
Birthday surprise for my wife and it was the perfect gift.Historic building with lovely gardens to explore and friendly professional staff. Efficient bus service also made it cheap and easy to travel into York and enjoy everything the stunning city has to offer.
Lovely property, just outside York city with spa and amazing gardens
Great stay.
This is a beautiful property! We loved everything about our stay!
Trip to York races
Excellent location for trip to York races, would certainly stay there again.
Very nice hotel, staff were extremely helpful and polite. Stayed overnight for races, did not have dinner there so can’t comment on food. Beautiful building, fabulous gardens excellent staff.
Very friendly and welcoming atmosphere
First class
First class. Excellent hotel, wonderful staff, great hotel.
Fantastic stay once again. Fantastic sunday lunch. Lovely cosy rooms Lounge areas are beautifully designed and all staff are super professional and extremely friendly and you can see that they are happy in their jobs.
Excellent stay! Comfortable bed, very clean room. Breakfast is excellent! Staff is friendly and very helpful, highly recommend
A piece of history
I chose Middlethorpe because of its history. It's a lovely old stately home which has been maintained to a high standard. The staff are very welcoming and the beds very comfortable. It's also a very pleasant walk into the centre of York!
Everything about the property was first class.
Genuinely a fantastic hotel. A real taste of luxury with superb staff in a charming and historic setting. We loved everything about it; the spa, the beautiful grounds, the breakfast, the elegance, the list goes on. We would certainly recommend this to everyone.
Beautiful grounds and garden.
I would definitely recommend this hotel. Absolutely stunning location, beautiful stately home with lush gardens. The staff were very polite and helpful, always on hand to cater to my every need. My room was cosy and cleaned every morning. Within a few miles of York, I walked there along the river most days. I will definitely be back next year.
Marvelous Middlethorpe Manor
A beautiful place, with gorgeous facilities and stunning grounds. The food is delicious and the staff are friendly and go out of their way for you. The restaurant is a bit stuffy and very expensive.
Have stayed at Middlethorpe twice before, lovely property and staff, plus very quiet. Easy access into the city centre.
Excellent service. Wonderful food.
Fabulous Easter weekend!
Lovely period style hotel. Fantastic friendly service. Spa needs some refurbishment & restaurant expensive (we ate in York instead)
Good service, comfortable but a bit overpriced.
We were greeted by very friendly and attentive staff. We were given a little tour of the main house and given some of its history. We were then shown to our court yard room. The room was a little small and very dated but I guess when somewhere is this old what should I expect? But it was relatively comfortable. I am sure the American tourists would think this is what all British hotels are like. We went over to the Spa which was nice pool, sauna and steam room good to relax. Book early if you want treatments though. We had a relatively relaxing sleep but we’re woken early by people leaving their rooms and doors slamming behind them. We ordered room service breakfast which arrived bang on time and it was very nice. On the whole our stay was good but in reality I think this place was very overpriced and I wouldn’t revisit unless it was about half what I paid.
Excellent National Trust owned hotel with spa and gardens.
An historic hotel
Amazing building, superb food, high priced, easy access to the centre of York - (the bus stop is only a few yards from the front door!) Old style - a porter, they can provide newspapers and early morning calls!
Lovely ambiance
Perfect overnight stay.
Great hotel, and location, staff very friendly and attentive, room lovely with great coffee machine. Breakfast excellent. Really nice gardens for a walk. Will return as it was a real treat, and very relaxing
Excellent visit Although The Yorkshire Breakfast was very disappointing we would go back but not have the breakfast included
Lovely staff, food outstanding, gorgeous house and grounds. Good spa. Quite a wait for drinks before dinner, and for the food itself, although staff apologised.
Have stayed here before, and delighted to be back again. Fabulous staff, great surroundings, and hotel itself looked great decked out in its Christmas splendour!
Unique historic hotel with good old fashioned service, only let down by the maid doing our room despite the Do Not Disturb sign.
Middlethorpe is well situated for trips to York. The house is elegant and comfortable. Sadly due to staffing issues it was not possible to dine, alrhough snacks were available in the evening.
It was brilliant
Excellent staff, could not have been more helpful
Everything at Middlethorpe is superb. I have stayed there for many years and the hotel is consistently excellent.
Perfect place to stay for a special weekend break
Lovely, traditional Hotel. All of the Staff were friendly and efficient, with a warm welcome, as soon as we arrived. We were in the Courtyard, staying in a large room, with a comfortable super king bed. My only slight criticism is that it was difficult to reach the bath taps around the fixed shower screen. The main House is very elegant, and there is a beautiful formal Garden and Grounds to stroll in. There is plenty of room in the free Car Park. The breakfast was delicious, with plenty of choice. We only had dinner there once; it was well presented and tasty. The Spa was also good, with a decent size pool. We were able to walk into York, which was around 40 minutes, along the Riverside, most of the way. And there is also a couple of Village Pubs, 15 minutes walk away. A perfect place to stay for a special weekend break.
Beautiful old house with friendly staff and a good service
Incredibly relazing. Friendly staff. Beautiful lication Only criticism is that the dinner menu didnt change each day and remianed the same all wee. Dinner was also expensive
The long weekend was an absolute indulgent delight.
Fantastic
Fantastic place lovely breakfast. Room was amazing spotless.
Beautiful hotel in a great location which is surrounded by countryside but only ten minutes in the car to the city centre and around 15 minutes walk to a few local pubs. Service from staff was excellent and nothing was too much trouble. We booked in for an evening meal in the hotel restaurant one of the evenings which was fabulous.
Nice old building with good restaurant
This is a lovely old building that is now a hotel. The room was spacious enough with some character and charm, old furniture, uneven floors, as expected in an old building. Dinner was excellent with well presented and served dishes. The service was friendly. Breakfast was good but would have been much better if the plates had been warmed, my breakfast was cold when I finished. Overall i would recommend this hotel
Beautiful features throughout the Hall and grounds, a little like stepping back in time. Walking distance to York centre.
Excellent service, although no dining available when we visited
Not long enough !!!
Excellent stay lovely hotel all staff were welcoming helpful and friendly room very clean and comfy . Stayed for one night but will be back for longer and to use the restaurant and spa . Stayed as a group of friends and all enjoyed the stay .
Heaven!
Cannot fault this wonderful hotel!! The staff were the most helpful, fantastic team I’ve come across ever. Needless to say we have rebooked! Truly a civilised, calm oasis!
Had a lovely stay in this wonderful historic property, highly recommend. Good breakfast and use of SPA with limited numbers due to covid. Would stay again.
Historic hotel, great food and service
Brilliant stay in York
Very good all round- excellent service from the Hall Porter and he was a delight throughout our 4 day stay in the Courtyard. Excellent food but would have liked a less rich option for dinner. Garden and grounds for a delight. Bus to town was very good and the two mile walk past the race course was easy for us when we felt energetic
This hotel is fantastic - the staff, the rooms and the location are all first-class. We were able to walk into he centre of York within 30 mins or so - along a very picturesque (and safe) route
We enjoyed the beautiful gardens and made good use of the swimming pool. Our room was small but clean. We thought breakfast choices were limited. It was a pleasant riverside walk into York (around 40 minutes) or an efficient bus service.
Such a beautiful hotel with lovely rooms, very polite and helpful staff member showed us around and helped us to our room. (Lovely man)
great short break
The staff were very obliging in every way from arriving in the car park to leaving. The hotel was comfortable and well looked after; The one thing only wrong was soggy toast in the morning
fantastic stay!
Had a fantastic time and would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a special trip. The building and the gardens were beautiful and the staff were so friendly and couldn’t do enough for us. The food was great and there were so many little touches (such a complimentary canapés with drinks in the lounge) that made our visit feel like a special occasion.
Beautiful surroundings
It was a welcome break with friends. The food was beautifully presented and of excellent quality.
Lovely hotel and excellent location just outside York. One of the best hotel breakfasts we have had. Room was clean and very quiet in the courtyard area. Overall this is a great place to stay.
Wonderful hotel!
Beautiful hotel, with the best service and great food. Lovely pool too!
A very friendly welcome upon arrival and a quick guided tour of the house before being led to our courtyard room which was very quaint and old fashioned, but smelled a tad musty. It felt a bit like staying at Grandma's house with furnishings and fabrics but was really cosy! The bed was comfy and we had a good nights sleep. COVID-19 precautions were excellent with TV remote in plastic and a pack of hand gel, wipes and masks provided along with temp. checks. Breakfast was lovely with white linen tablecloths and the service great. Unfortunately we didn't get to use the Spa as arrived quite late but would definitely like to come back. The gardens were beautiful and well kept. Definitely the best hotel we had stayed in following a 7 day tour of the UK - Fab stay Thank you!
This is probably the best short hotel break I have ever had. I cannot commend it highly enough. The staff, the rooms, the food are all of the finest standard. I have booked again for September.
lovely break in stately home
Lovely relaxing night away. Beautiful, well kept hotel. Lovely grounds to wander around and then sit on the terrace for a drink or afternoon tea. Staff were exceptional - very professional but friendly and welcoming too. Excellent food quality with good choice of drinks and extensive wine list. Spa just over road from hotel was lovely too. Highly recommend for a relaxing break. Felt very safe with high safety/precaution standards against covid.
Everything was 5 star.
Fabulous historic house in beautiful gardens. Food, service, Covid processes, everything about the hotel and our stay was superb. Lovely friendly staff who go the extra mile for you. The pool and spa were closed due to the epidemic but I would still recommend highly.
the natural ambiance, convenient location and historic interest
A Treat
Really beautiful grounds and Spa. Fine dining restaurant was gorgeous. A proper treat. Would stay again for sure. Very convenient for the races too, didn't realise how close we were.
Peace full
It is a good place to be treated like your special, very relaxing atmosphere, staff really like to spoil you. I like the idea that mobile phones are discouraged in the public areas. peace.
We were upgraded to a fabulous suite which was very comfortable. The staff were great and the surrounding gardens were very beautiful
Excellent service lovely location Food brilliant staff excellent
Stylish, efficient, clean. Excellent understated service and a wonderful restaurant.
Excellent
Excellent all round with nice location close to York Centre. Food excellent. Hotel warm and welcoming staff.
Great place to stay, lovely room (7). Dinner menu is pricey and perhaps limited in choice, but they are happy to mix things about.
1 night stay
Nice quiet mid week stay after the bank holiday. Weather was lovely which always helps. Made use of the small garden for sunbathing and the spa right next door, then walked into York for the night. The room, Hall and gardens are excellent for a nice relaxing break.
The attentiveness of the staff and the accommodation including amenities were very good, would definitely stay again. Highly recommended.
Bathroom was mall. Shower was fixed over bath and low I am not tall but only just fitted under it. They said the room was an upgrade, thank goodness for that the other room must have been very small
Lovely property, beautiful gardens, nice and helpful staff, and the food was fabulous if somewhat expensive. I would definitely go again. The only minor things were - I was not keen on their sausage at breakfast, and their scones could do with being warm, and the corridor in the spa near the sauna and things seemed rather dark and could do with a spruce up, likewise with the tiles near the jacuzzi.
Very good excellent staff
Great location. Great hotel. Great staff.
Beautiful hotel with everything you could need. Good location for visiting York and the designers outlet just around the corner. Great service all round with friendly staff ready to help you with anything they can to make your stay enjoyable.
Middlethorpe Hall
We really enjoyed our stay here . On arrival we were told we had been upgraded and ended up in small cottage near the main hotel with its own patio , very pretty. Fast friendly service in the restaurant and the cooked breakfast was excellent . The evening meal was just as good , the veloute soup was the best I have ever had , followed by the aged beef and chocolate brownie for dessert . This hotel deserves its reputation.
Spa was nice, just make sure you pre book your massage in advance as its a small place and tgey fo get busy. Lovely location and garden
Beautiful buildings, excellent staff. No bar area, though drinks can be ordered in the lounge.
Relaxing - good food and first class service. Staff were brilliant!
Beautiful. Setting is quite lovely and people were very helpful.
We loved the setting, the rooms (we were upgraded, which was delightful), and the swimming pool. Very pleasant staff throughout our stay. However, there was no management to be seen. Until our third night I was going to suggest a return visit. However, we'd decided to eat in the restaurant as it was our wedding anniversary. We'd booked for 7.3 0 but were not seated until about 8.30. As my husband's diabetic, this could have been a major problem. The starters were delicious and beautifully presented; the vegetarian main course grossly overpriced. I'm vegetarian and the option I chose, though very tasty, was tiny. If the ingredients cost as much as £1.50 I'd be astonished. I know that much of the cost is in prep etc, but almost £30.00 was ridiculous. The breakfasts were good, though, again, the vegetarian breakfast varied enormously in size - there was no portion size or quality control. On our final morning, it took about half an hour for the cooked part of the breakfast to arrive and mine was merely tepid - with a helping of eggshell in the (undercooked) poached egg, and toast like rusks. I didn't send it back because we were meeting friends and would have been very late. We are in the process of writing to the manager - with such pleasant staff and being such a beautiful place, it shouldn't be difficult to improve. Would we stay again? Yes, as long as we weren't going to have dinner there.
I loved the stay, for a 4 star hotel the price was really low, it has well maintained grounds, nespresso machines and a free sauna, steam room pool and gym. I paid for treatments at the spa which were good. Best ploughman’s lunch I’ve ever had and the fish and chips were also good. The thing that stood out here was the service from the staff- from the welcome to every single member of staff being friendly. Cleaners, grounds men, front desk, spa and the porter, greeted with a good morning is always a nice touch. Lovely quiet spot and easy to find. The only thing I’d suggest was to improve the tv in the room... you can spend as much or as little as you want. I will visit again
A Manor House experience
An amazing stay. The details of the manor are fantastic, you get a real experience of what it would of been like a few centuries ago thanks to the National Trust. The room rates are very reasonable but even though the restaurant is excellent beware that the cost of your stay will escalate if you eat and drink in house. But that has to be taken into context that it’s worth it for what the staff and management provide.
Relaxing stay at a countryside retreat
Lovely period property and attached gardens. Enjoyed strolling through gardens at sunset. Breakfast was very good and the service too. The older, wooden, elegant furnishings are what you would expect for a property of this age and adds to the experience. Enjoyed the spa as well. It’s small but clean and relaxing. Only drawback would be the traffic noise from a nearby road... but not enough to bother us.
Nice hotel
Nice place to stay, comfortable room and the breakfast was good
We weren't sure what to expect, BUT we loved our room, the service, the environment and everything with the Hall! We will definitely be back and recommend it to everyone! We got there too late for the Spa but look forward to trying it next time! Thank you!
Loved the arrival and greeting. Staff couldn’t be friendlier.
Lovely stay - all staff were excellent and extremely attentive.
Nice but too pricey
Lovely stay in beautiful spot. Very expensive food & wine, but food was excellent. No need for wine to carry such a premium. Very unnecessary 15% service charge on already expensive meal. Service functional, but nothing more.
Dinner was excellent. Breakfast was okay. The hotel was fabulous. The gardens were amazing. Quiet location.
York Hotel
The hotel was in a beautiful setting, but rooms old fashioned needed modernising Very disappointed they dried to charge us for 2 bootleg of wine when we had 2 glasses. Bar prices were high £11 for a gin and tonic Restaurant very expensive Salmon dish £31.
Middlethorpe In May
As N.T members we were touring some of the Yorkshire properties... decided to make the most of Middlethorpe Hall and stay the night. Luxurious property, excellent food both evening and breakfast... lovely well maintained gardens. Definitely recommend if you enjoy a stay with a touch of class
