Cheap but shabby

Good spot by the estuary, bar OK, Staff very friendly, food good, massive breakfast. But the room was poor, small, smelly, with a noisy saniflo toilet, a weak and rubbish shower, uneven floor, which didn't bother us too much but some people may struggle. Bedding and towels were clean although very old. Access is through the pub kitchen! And up some step back stairs. We had only booked on night, which was fine, the accommodation was very cheap, the premises need an update.

Don’t bother

Firstly, when it says they have parking, they don’t. Secondly, the room was unclean and beyond shabby. Photos will say it all. Thought about walking out and would have had we had anywhere else to stay. Would have complained but the only people around at breakfast were the cleaners. The toilet was a very loud macerator toilet which was chucking out a sewage stench and the side panel of the shower ( which trickled out lukewarm water) was smashed. The Lino had obviously had previous leakage because it was all lumpy and smelt damp. I cannot stress how poor it was. I have stayed in hostels which were better. By far, the worst accommodation we have ever suffered. The food was nothing to write home about. Overall, steer well clear. If any management read this review, we would appreciate some contact because we would like our money back!

Fish on the quay, Lovely little B&B.

A really good stay at fish on the quay. Staff were lovely, would like to mention especially jack (barman) and Kieran (assistant manager as they were happy, and always spoke to us, to be honest all staff were friendly. The room was very nice, we were lucky as we had the bathroom in our room, but other rooms don’t. It’s a nice little B&B. Breakfast was really good and a good size, chef did a brilliant job. One thing I would say is that it look late like u don’t get housekeeping for the stay while u are there, the bin did get full and tea and coffee did not get filled up, BUT all you have to do is ask if you need anything and they are happy to supply it. Would recommend it and definitely would stay there again if in the area, would love to see the area in the summer.

When i book somewhere, like everybody else i read the comments and probably like everyone you look at the negatives first. The more i read them the more i wanted to stay here. So if you are looking for a 5 star hotel with all ammenties under 3 years old please dont come here. This wonderful 400 year old pub is full of quirky, the floors creek and are not all spirt level flat, the plumbing babbles along at its own pace but hot water comes and the shower got me clean. No bath in our room (we did have access to one) so we bathed our baby in the longest sink you will find. I bumped my head on a few low ceiling, well I'm 6 foot and the biulders were not. The bed was comfortable and clean the veiw was so peaceful and the food was fab. The breakfast kept me full till evening. Most importantly the staff went way beyond your posh hotels they were friendly and couldn't have made our stay more.of a delight. So come here if you love the rich history of England but avoid it if you want coperate blandness. Thank you Babs and your team

Short stay at Twixmas

Nice old pub with lots of character. It’s a very old building that is also very noisy as it’s old. Kept awake at night by washing machine on floor below. Beds were not very comfy and bathrooms are clean but not well maintained and could do with replacing. Staff were very friendly and helpful and the food was fabulous.

Need to invest some in plumbing. Bed really comfortable although my headboard became detached. Maybe get some sort of better tv channel supplier. No music channels with what they had. Great location only 20 min walk to some major supermarkets. All staff extremely helpful and pleasant apart from one who maybe needs some training. I mean who is the customer?? Awful

The Jolly Sailor was a big disappointment from the moment I arrived. The sub title of ‘Fish on the Quay’ conjured up a feast of fresh fish dishes on an exciting menu. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the case! In addition, the establishment offered parking which isn’t the case! The parking is on street parking which, if I had known, it would have stopped me from making the reservation. Co-incidentally, my car was damaged in the street! The accommodation is about as basic as a hostel. The room was cold, unwelcoming, basic and had a fairly revolting smell about it. The floor was covered in linoleum and the bed was barely comfortable. The bathroom was tired and in need of serious refurbishment. The noisy klargester randomly set itself off throughout the night. The box-work between the toilet and shower was falling away from the wall and you felt (possibly erroneously) that the whole area was grubby. Dinner was again disappointing. The ‘Cromer’ crab salad was more likely to have been pasteurised crabmeat and for some inexplicable reason the brown and white meat had been mixed together and placed back into a previously washed and re-used shell. When booking the accommodation, I paid for breakfast but, on enquiring about the breakfast hours, I was informed that breakfast was served from 9am. This was absolutely no use to me as I had to depart at 8am. To get a refund, I was told to take it up with the management. Unless you are desperate, don’t get fooled by the location.

Our stay at the fish on the quay was disappointing, because our room was a lot smaller than expected, the bathroom itself made a loud noise when flushing the toilet, that lingered for a while, once using the shower the water took over 10 minutes to become warm even then it was luke warm, as well as leaving a smell of sewerage after every use, the radiator in the room clearly needed bleeding as only the bottom of the radiator was warm, the radiator also made a sound of running water frequently. The worst part of our stay was on the day of check out around 9:00am we believe a staff member attempted to unlock the door, but was unsuccessful due to myself locking the door with the key the previous night, if I had not have done this, the door would have been opened, which I think isn’t at all acceptable considering check out wasn’t until 11:00am. The area of the fish and the quay is nice but we will not be returning

From start to finish a truly memorable experience in every good way We had a 3 night break due to a wedding and was using the jolly sailor-fish on the quay as a central base for the wedding and all activities in the area We were greeted by variety with a lovely smile and helpful attitude and were asked if we wanted to go straight up to our room or would prefer a sit down and a drink first and as I had just driven for about an hour chose the latter took a look at the menu and also chose to have a light bite My option the ham sandwich with pickles came up well presented with crisps and a side salad on brown bread (and what a treat) ham off the bone and packed with flavour and in general all the food was excellent so much so that we chose to eat just there as reasonably priced and good value for the quality out of this world My compliments to the chief he knows his job thank you well done and it don’t stop there from the roast platter which could of easily fed a family of 4 and at £42 was terrifically good value and packed with choice and flavour far too much for us two breakfast another great experience quality and choice from a big breakfast to a light bite and healthy eating and at cafe prices WOW Having chilled and refreshed from our journey we ready to be shown to our room We were lead through part of the kitchen area to stairs which led to our rooms I was given the option of two rooms and although the smaller room overlooking the quay and the views of the boats amazing

A hidden gem on the East coast

Admittedly we where a bit suspicious when we couldn’t contact the staff the day before or even early on the dag of arrival but then on things went very smoothly indeed. The room was perfekt and we didn’t object to the air condition a bit in the sweltering heat. The view feromon our window over the old Thames barges were soothing if you’ll excuse the expression. Before check in and moving in we had a nice cold seafood platter. We were not hungry for the rest of the rest of the day. The next day we could enjoy the breakfast which was included. It was somewhat late at 9, but on the other hand it was really a FULL English breakfast so it saved us a lunch. The house is old which menas there are no lifts but water that get a little boost at timmes, but that’S part of the package,I supponerad I can really recommend this place and I would gladly come back again

The evening meal and service there in the bar was great. No issues. During the night we were disturbed by a fellow visitor who had got locked out and despite a suppossed key code being displayed in our tooms we could not find a key pad anywhere on the outside of the building. Also we were disturbed to realize that there eere no staff in the pub overnight. What would we have done in the event of a fire??? We stayed 2 nights. The view of Maldon quay from our room was excellent. Breakfast was fantastic. The staff were lovely. We felt the hotel would benefit from an update if possible as access to the upetairs bedrooms is appalling, through part of the kifchen which also disperses kitchen smells upstairs. The stairs are also very steep. Bedroom flooring (old lino) needs replacing as did the bed and headboard. The bathroom has been reburbished and was fine. Our room had air con which we didn't need. Parking in Maldon is difficult. Hotel location excellent.

Disappointing

Some of the staff were friendly and helpful. However, our overall experience is that we left the hotel at midnight and didn’t stay due to ongoing party downstairs - where we were told things would be quiet after 11pm. I get it’s a pub, but the walls were vibrating and it got past midnight and there was no sign of the music/screaming stopping. It was not what we deemed “relaxing”. The food was okay at best, with the fish not seeming right and tasting like chicken so that wasn’t eaten. The room was cramped and shower wasn’t very powerful. The area is very lovely around the B&B - I wish when we booked it, we received an email telling us there would be a party as we would have just booked elsewhere to avoid the late night disruption of having to leave and drive over an hour home. Each to their own, but we won’t be returning.

Breakfast and staff service were good, unfortunately everything else was terrible. Management forgot to tell kitchen there were guests on arrival date, so kitchen closed early and had to go to fish and chip shop. Room was very poor. White wall were obviously dirty in places and someone had painted over matt white white patches of silk white. Door lock wouldn’t work properly. Handle on “bathroom “ door was held on by a 3cm wood screw that stuck out by probably 2.75cm. Bare timber and mastic all around base of shower cubicle as plastic gone from base leaving at least 30cm by 20cm hole with bare plastic pipes. Dirty brown smears on toilet door frame. Wall behind toilet cystern and also near toilet roll dirty. Brackets to hold clothes rack and draw unit to walls pulled out of wall. But worst of all, black painted cupboards behind entrance door had loads of paint coming off and had a mirror hanging off the top cupboard door. When I opened the cupboards to put in cases as room was so small, they were literally filled with broken pieces of plaster board and an old sink. Unfortunately we had nowhere else to go and no time available to hunt for an alternative. Thankfully we were only in the room when we were asleep and staff and breakfast were good. Told food staff about the poor the room, they said they knew and were sorry and had told the owner in the past, but he doesn’t care. Maldon is a lovely place and worth a visit, boat trips excellent, park is great, but stay somewhere else.

Bed was firm. Room warm. Pretty clean. Downsides, the place shared a name with another pub local - make sure to put in post code. It seems like the property has two names. As a solo female traveler perhaps I am more fussy than most but - parking isn’t guaranteed / offered by the bnb. The rooms are accessed via a staff area and it just feels a bit awkward. The room I stayed in (number 4) had a “private” bathroom, separate to the bedroom. There was a funny smell by the bedroom door in particular. I don’t like rooms that have windows that could be accessed or easily peered in from outside and this one while on the first floor, had roof access outside. I felt like the room wasn’t fully secure with a panel that looks like it could be accessed somehow. The private bathroom door is difficult to lock. In the morning I left at 8am and no one around, exit was via a marquee-overall the place is a struggle to get around with multiple bags and not somewhere I’d recommend for people with mobility challenges. Overall- I’m fussy but I would visit there again for the customer service and food, but wouldn’t stay as first choice.

A quaint old pub ideally located within easy walking distance of Maldon High Street. The bar/breakfast area was welcoming, and the staff were great. To get to the room I was staying in could be awkward if you were not nimble, due to the steep staircase from the staff area, but an enjoyable stay and a great breakfast. Very good value overall for a room in Maldon.

Friendly welcoming staff, unfortunately the room was very tired, cleaning was of poor standard, access to the room was through the pub kitchen and very steep stairs. No parking at the property, had to wait 20 minutes for a space to become available on the road.

Below standard accommodation

Located in a beautiful area, with stunning views and excellent paths for walking. Charming building in the outside but needs a lot of TLC in the interior. The level of cleanliness in the room was below acceptable. However, not everything was bad: the restaurant was pleasant and the quality of the breakfast was really good. The staff was friendly and kind.

Jolly Sailor/Fish on The Quay

Very friendly staff and breakfast was amazing. If using Satnav type in Fish on The Quay Maldon as there's a Jolly Sailor in Heybridge where we mistakenly went first. Great place overall

To be situated right on the quayside with the view I had from my room window was well worth the money for a nights stay. The room was small but adequate with all amenities in place. Steep staircase and low wood beam cielings are typical for the age and style of the building but had great character. The staff were very welcoming and and food was excillent. A full, very large english breakfast with excillent local sauages went down very well indeed.

A lovely & restful stay

We had a lovely stay at the Jolly Sailor- Fish on the Quay Babs and her staff were very welcoming, friendly && couldn't do enough to make our stay perfect. We had a two night stay, the breakfast choices were very good and the full English was quite a plateful, we had our evening meals here and couldn't fault them. The view from our room across the estuary & quay were amazing & like stepping back in time to another century

Needs updating

Bathroom in need of a good clean especially the shower tiles, Shower was also boiling hot or freezing cold didn’t have a shower the whole three days I was there just had to wash in the sink. The toilet was a macerator toilet, very noisy even when you use the water from the tap.

It was quite pleasant, but the food wasn't very good and it was very noisy in the mornings! It's almost impossible to find a parking space nearby and I spent quite a while driving around until one was free, so definitely needs a dedicated plot for customers' parking! But the staff were lovely - accommodating, friendly, kind and polite. The surrounding area is really beautiful too and I would consider staying again.

Location / location - we had a good stay because of this - Weather was fantastic so could sit outside and enjoy a great meal - loved the thai food on a tuesday - The room was disappointing -did not have a view over the river was over the road this needs to be addressed on hotels.com marketing . You do have to walk through the kitchen and rooms are tired / In room 3 need to sort broken tile and use mold magic in parts of bathroom - Get new sheets for bedding - clearing all washed and clean but very old - Staff though were excellent and very friendly - Breakfast was made to order and was very good. Overall we enjoyed our stay but wouldnt return ( apart from for a meal) due to condition of room

We have just spent 2 nights at the Jolly Sailor Fish on the Quay and had a really lovely stay. The property itself is gorgeous with lots of character that you’d expect from an old pub several hundred years old, with a recent renovation having been beautifully and tastefully done. The view across many ancient wooden Thames barges and across the Blackwater river was beautiful. We were made so welcome by all of the staff who were wonderful, and the food was excellent. Also the bed was one of the most comfortable I have ever slept in! We will certainly be back as soon as possible.
