Dragonfly ranch is a great place to stay if you love the sound of nature and being in a hippie style environment ie yoga, healthy breakfast, sound of animals constantly and outdoor showers/toilets with frogs in them. That being said if you dont this is not the property for you , the constant sound of frogs and birds all night followed by roosters and dogs at 4am drove me nuts. Not sure why its labeled as a three star "hotel"'. Research before you book its definitely not for everyone.

I think the very mixed reviews give a good sense of the place. The natural setting with the sunset views is very special. But, it is one step above tree house camping, and it isn’t glamping because it definitely isn’t glamorous. There are junked vehicles and a ton of clutter all over the property. Nothing feels super clean. Our room was cool but it is only screened in. As noted most showers are outdoors. Many of the folks working there are “interns” getting a free bed but not being paid, but there is a $50 cash turnover fee (which Expedia does show in the fine print). I thought the stay was a cool experience but that the cost was high given how very rustic it is. If you are comfortable staying with eccentric relatives and going with the flow this is an alternative to a boring motel.

This B&B has you living in the jungle among the tree tops. The birds singing during the day and the coqui frogs singing at night made for a truly authentic Hawaiian experience. All staff were kind and helpful. Breakfast was always healthy and satisfying. Our room was comfortable and airy. The price was excellent but I strongly recommend booking directly through Dragonfly Ranch's owner. We hope to return soon.

I stayed in the Jungle Penthouse for one night at the Dragonfly Ranch, and it was an unforgettable experience. Finding the ranch was easy, thanks to the clear directions. The staff were incredibly kind and friendly, they also recommended various things to do and nearby restaurants, which enhanced my stay. The room itself was cozy and charming, equipped with A/C, fans, hot water, a comfortable bed, a sofa, and a mezzanine (though I didn't try the bed there). The kitchenette was a nice touch, as were the toilet and sink. The shower, separated from the room, added a unique touch to the experience. This isn't your standard hotel room, but that's what makes it special. It's a great place to connect with nature. The night sky was amazing, and the sounds of little frogs added to the ambiance. Breakfast was another highlight, with organic local fruits, great coffee, bread, eggs, and more, making it a perfect addition to staying at this place.

Really read the reviews and look closely at the pictures. This is an old property that has had plywood rooms added over the years. If you like a commune hippy feel, this will be fine. If you're expecting more than cobbled together, tiny rooms, you'll be disappointed. Thew views from the deck were nice, but overall for the prices charged, it was extremely underwhelming.

I loved how authentic this country location is. That said, if you are a person that cannot survive w o AC or TV it may not be for you. For myself, I loved the chance to get away from all the (noise) of the outside world and truly experience the lovely grounds of this fabulous location. Rooms are screened in so all the wondeeful sights and sounds of nature may be experienced. There are fans if you need and our room had a lovely outdoor shower. It also had a table where you could take in the sunset and ocean views. Perfect for people that appreciate nature and its beauty. Staff was very nice and friendly. This was an amazing tropical paradise! Tropical open air rooms with fabulous decor and healing mediative areas to enjoy the tranquility in Captain Cook. Less than 2 miles from the popular snorkeling spot "Two Step" and the historical monument known as "Place of Refuge". The breakfast was excellent with multiple fruits, breads, oatmeal, nut butters, chia and yogurt, and huge selection of local jams. Staff was helpful - especially Ausin who showed us the fruit trees all over the grounds including the labyrinth and yoga area. we will definitely be staying again; we stayed in the writers Studio- truly offered all the comforts of home.

I can't say enough good things about Dragonfly. We only stayed a night unfortunately but planning to come back already (checked out a few hours ago). The owner is super friendly and interesting. We felt welcomed from the second we set foot in the property. The vibe is new age but it's very low key. You can absorb the vibe or ignore it. Breakfast included an interesting assortment of fruit, coffee, tea, toast and yogurt with chia seeds. Everything organic. The Dolphin Room had everything we needed. Giant comfortable bed. Outdoor bathroom but screened and private. It's not the Hilton (thankfully) and not for everyone but if it's what you're looking for then it's perfect. Sounds of nature abound. Peaceful energy that nurtures the soul. And again I have to emphasize if the new age vibe doesn't appeal then you can easily ignore it. Please don't let that put you off. Come and enjoy.

I stayed in the Writer's Studio room, which was a unique experience. The windows are screened but not glassed in, so you get to enjoy copious fresh air, the sounds of a delightful babbling fountain and the resident coquis, and the comfortable temperature of the landscaped property at the Dragonfly Ranch. (Earplugs are provided for those who are not lulled to sleep by the sounds of nature.) I wish I could have availed myself of Barbara's healing services, but I arrived late and had to leave early for a dive trip. I missed the breakfast, but its description made me wish my dive trip started an hour later! I hope to return next year and perhaps stay longer to get the full experience.

Dragonfly is a unique place in Kona, with exceptional people running the facility, which was created by the founder 50 years ago! It doesn’t fit into any conventional thinking about hotels and they have a great upper deck with a fantastic view that would be fabulous for yoga. It is close to many sites but you have to be comfortable with the unconventional, including some frogs!

Barbara and her staff are absolutely the kindest people on earth! Their description of their ranch is exactly as they say. We got to live with nature but all the elements of a very upscale ranch. It was holistic, peaceful and nurturing for the soul. This is NOT a place for people looking for a pedicure. This is a place for healing and time within and reflection. My husband says it’s “simple and spiritual.” We have backpacked and hiked all over the islands and this place was such a gem to us. More like the hippie oasis and soul searchers retreat.

Its a little more basic than we thought it would be. The bathroom was clean but basic. Dragonfly Ranch is in the jungle - bring mosquito spray. We had a big arse spider in the bathroom - none of us dare go past him to take a shower. A simple breakfast was provided: coffee, cereal with nuts and fruit and toast.

This is nothing like a hotel or B&B you would normally stay in. It is an eclectic experience more akin to crashing at a friend's place because you need a place to stay. In fact, many of the friendly staff seem to be doing just that. If you like a very different experience, this may be the place for you. First off, the doors to the rooms are not secure. They have only simple latches, so if you leave the property, you will want to bring all your valuables. There are no glass windows, just screens, and obviously no A/C, which can be a problem when it gets hot. They have fans, some good and some not. The beds seem to be clean but don't look too close into the corners or closets. Most showers are outside of the rooms, protected by sliding curtains. Cobwebs are ever-present as well. This place was apparently once a yoga studio and wellness retreat and still has many of the same facilities for those functions, including lots of books and healing oils around. The breakfast is a healthy affair with fresh cooked grains like quinois, and fresh fruit as well. The nut butters and jams for toast come from a collection that has been used by many people for a long time. They come out of the fridge on a tray that has been holding them all for quite a while. The place is filled with all kinds of interesting art and objects, but some, like the collection of musical instruments in the main "lobby" are covered with cobwebs. This place could be great with a major overhaul and deep cleaning.

Unusual but Pleasant

The location was not what I expected. There are no locking doors, so if you want to leave anything in your room while you are away, you can not lock it. You can latch the screen door from the inside. The bathroom for the room I stayed in was not completely private. It was essentially on the outside porch and screened in by bamboo blinds. The location is staffed primarily by college age adults that were pleasant and helpful. It was a more natural setting than most lodging places. If asked if I would stay there again, I most likely would say yes.

We arrived and somehow in booking with hotels.com it changed 6 people to 2 people. So we had to pay $120 extra dollars to stay all in 1 room, which had lizards and the biggest bugs ever inside. We paid $456 for 1 night and most definitely not worth it! Also don’t stay here if you’re allergic to cats! A cat kept coming into our room all night through the outdoor shower which is completely open to the room. Pictures are better than in person.

The only downsides were that local shops close really early if you are trying to pick up food if arriving after 8pm and we were woken by someone (possibly staff) having a long, loud telephone conversation at 4am. This was our favorite place we stayed at over our two-week stay in Hawaii. My seven year old said “Good job finding this place, Mama!” Barbara told us she has run Dragonfly ranch for 47 years! And she has clearly been pouring live and presence into the place all that time. It’s probably not for everyone—if you’re a Hilton resort kind of person or don’t like to be close to nature, skip this. But if you swoon over private outdoor showers and a score of Big Island night sounds serenading your sleep, you’ll love it here. Breakfast is wholesome and comes with an incredible view. The sunsets are amazing, too. It’s like living in a retreat center. The charm and loving vibe are through the roof. This place is special, absolutely one of a kind. I wish we’d stayed much longer. It would be easy to make this a home base and travel all over the island while staying at the Dragonfly. Highly recommend!

If you are looking for unique experience in lush green jungles for relax and reflections, this B&B may be just the place. We arrived at the place later and missed the somewhat secluded entrance. The place doesn’t have all the amenities of a hotel, but the view and the sound were very rewarding. The room has a screen door, so that it offers fragrance of the jungle and a symphony played by bugs, frogs, birds day and night, and joined in by roosters in early morning. As you stayed longer, the “symphony” faded into a background music and you became less aware of its existence. The batch is also open to air - a 7’ bamboo screen and a roof provides privacy and partial protection from weather. There are two geckos taking the place behind the bathroom mirror as their home. If you turn on the bathroom light at the night, they would come out - not to welcome you, but to catch a few bugs attracted by the light for their dinner! When you enjoy your breakfast prepared with healthy ingredients and fruits, you would meet the company of two cute small dogs (Makana and Lonali) and a Siamese cat (Azure ), who was very attached to you. This is a germ hidden in the jungle if you are looking for staying close to nature but with all the comforts nowadays.

Our family of 4 loved the Dragonfly Ranch! We stayed in the Writers Studio and were very comfortable. We loved the openness of the room with the sounds of the jungle day and night! The breakfasts were incredible with different grains each morning with endless toppings along with toast and every kind of jelly you can think of! And the views to eat your meal was unforgettable. The Kona coffee was amazing, grown a mile away and handpicked for perfect ripeness, Barbara the owner of Dragonfly contacted the coffee grower so we could go pick up a precious pound to take home. Every single staff member was all very friendly and helpful and the environment was very relaxed. We loved walking the grounds seeing the farm animals, gardens and the Illuminarium for doing yoga, meditation or just sipping coffee looking over the beautiful Pacific. The location was excellent with Two-Step a couple miles away and great snorkeling. We also visited Pebble Beach and Hookana beach nearby. Black Rock Pizza in Captain Cook is the bomb with tasty Hoi Boi pizza and passion fruit Mai Tais! The geckos were a treat to see and interact with (they liked licking our plate which is a no-no:). Yes it’s a jungle so expect critters but overall the place is clean. We felt like we were staying with family, even Azure the Siamese cat stayed with us nearly the whole time (my teenager loved!) We will be back! Thank you Barbara!

Lovely unconventional close to nature place

This was an absolutely amazing place to stay. Easy to get to, it feels like you are in the middle of the tropical forest with the frogs singing at night. The dragonfly ranch isn't your typical hotel. The room was comfortable and cool with lots of shade from the surrounding trees. Lots of screen windows and doors, making the whole experience close to the surrounding nature. Breakfast included a selection of exotic jams from a nearby farm that were fun to experiment with. While my family loved it, this is definitely an unconventional place, so I could imagine some people might not like it. Here are some things you might find strange. - The room didn't lock, with just a screen door. - The bathroom just had a curtain and mosquito screen as a door. - The shower wasn't tiles, but had a stone floor. - One of the hotel's cats kept sneaking into the room through the showers.

This property is beautiful and unique. It is set up almost like a giant tree house. I loved the mix of indoor and outdoor shower options and the connection with nature. The koki frogs where loud but where else would you get an experience like that! They serve the most amazing breakfast. The staff goes above and beyond for you. You are almost walking distance to one of the best snorkel spots on the island. Best of all.if you need help physically they offerer healing modalities! Love love and will be nack again. This was my 5th trip here. I always start my hawaii vacation here because it is really a show stopper and experience for anyone i bring!

This is a one of a kind place that provides a glamping type feel. We stayed in the dolphin room with a semi private bathroom, no a/c and open to the Hawaiian breeze (which is amazing at night). The area is beautiful and they have a great view of the ocean. Can be kind of loud at night with the birds but they provide ear plugs. My shower was warmish but my husband said his shower was hot so you gotta wait a bit. They serve a small healthy breakfast of fruits, quinoa and toast, perfect to get going in the morning. Unfortunately we weren't there long enough to enjoy some of the additional amenities like yoga, snorkeling, or tour assistance. The only negative thing is that the common areas are cluttered and weren't very neat. I also didnt like we couldn't lock up our room. The staff was helpful and kind however. We got in late so they let us check-in in the morning. I will stay again if in the same area!

What can I say, we fell in love with the Dragonfly ranch and Barbara. Her staff was beyond kind and delightful This is not your average spot. If you want an experience that you won’t forget stay here. It’s not for someone who wants all the amenities and being pampered This is a perfect spot for someone who wants to get away from the normal and escape to a tropical outdoor living paradise.

We enjoyed our stay— would recommend to a friend. Staff was friendly and accommodating. Lots a fresh local fruit at breakfast. Beautiful setting, ocean views, great room. Location is on fast narrow windy road with little shoulder, so difficult to get anywhere without a car.

This is the coolest place on the big island! We stayed here because we could not get any other hotel room near Kona for under $500 during Christmas. It is truly like staying in the middle of a rain forest yet being seconds from amazing restaurants, snorkeling and all other island activities. Increadible staff and a great very relaxed vibe. This is not for everybody and we worried about our shower being outside and the very strange room descriptions but this is what made our stay to short and an amazing experience. My teenagers thought this was the best hotel even though it did not have a TV in the room! Happy New Year

It was a beautiful property at one time, not clean, roaches crawled on me in bed, slugs all over the floor at night. For 250 a night no way again. It just needs a really good scrubbing. Outside bathtub was filthy and full of bugs, inside flowers were mildewy If you really like rustic but expensive! Breakfast was bulgar

Interesting place

Checkin was a little off putting. Lack of friendliness and no explanation of the property or where the yoga studio was located. Soon after arriving, someone was using our outdoor shower. After asking the next morning, we found out the “camper” and other long term rentals use it. We stayed at the jungle penthouse. The actual inside was very rustic as expected and incredibly bug free even with a broken door and screen. Clean interior and comfortable bed. Fruit in the morning was delicious. Coqui frogs loud, but we enjoyed them. Be aware no privacy and sound carries. Once we met the actual staff (I think a long term guest checked us in) they were very friendly! Owner was extraordinarily nice and helpful.

5 stars!!!! We loved our stay at Dragonfly Ranch. We arrived late and found that it was easy to locate. Our family of five and our service dog fit well in the comfortable Writers Studio. Dragonfly Ranch is beautiful--lush, green and welcoming. The whole Dragonfly team is made us feel at home. It is truly a healing center. Our 18 year old did not want to be in Hawaii until after he talked with Barbara. We are grateful for the magic transformation. I hope to make a similar center near volcano. The Dragonfly Ranch is an inspiration!

What we liked was how low- key it was and overall quiet. That being said, it was almost too low key as there was no direction to how the b&b is run. The entrance was unclear, extremely muddy, and dingy with overgrown brush. It is up an extremely steep hill so it is very inconvenient. The rooms are okay. Not dirty but not exactly clean either. The worst part was the HIDDEN PET FEE and the owner awkwardly asked us what we think the price should be. Also, the website states that their dogs are quiet and friendly which is far from true. They let their dogs run the place and attempted to attack our dogs. It is unfair to mislead people to thinking it's a dog friendly establishment when they allow their animals to be aggressive towards ours. Overall, pretty disappointing but better than being homeless. I think it wouldn't have been so disappointing if it wasn't expensive.

This place is special. If you are looking for some kind of hotel to spend a couple of nights - just skip it and look for something else. But if you are a seeker, and have been looking for a long time for someplace to be yourself and open your eternal being - this is the right place.

Beautiful stay close to nature

This was an absolute highlight of my vacation. The hotel has extensive grounds that you can freely explore, and the hotel has a communal atmosphere with a shared upstairs kitchen which you can have breakfast in if you like (we didn’t as we were a large group and it would’ve been an extra cost.) One of the best parts of my stay was doing sunset yoga in the rainbow I was blown away by the scenery. With that being said, if you are not okay with being very close to nature, having geckos in your room, screens instead of glass windows, etc. you will NOT enjoy this hotel. To me, these aspects were the most enjoyable of my stay. I put this out there however because I know that for some people this will not be a welcome atmosphere. Overall, it was absolutely magical!

Its nice to experience as a retreat if one don’t mind lack of hot shower and no real privacy. Need a car as everywhere in. big Island . I run away after 2 nights . On a positive side there was a refreshing feeling of Hawaiian spirit encounter and nice hostess.

Perfect 10, for some.

This is a perfect ten place for the right niche of person. Personally, bugs --especially giant spiders -- give me anxiety. Even though we were adequately warned upon arrival that the very large spiders are harmless and could easily be removed by staff from our room, I couldn't sleep a wink. Picturesque views. An insta-perfect place to Stay, but only if you're cool with lots of nature.

An unconventional quirky and beautiful place to be. Super friendly staff and guests. Cute Chihuahuas and Siamese cats to provide you company. This is a simple and rustic place to stay and comfortable as well. Restorative in so many ways. I wish I was there longer. I didn’t do yoga but I enjoyed breakfast and a good night sleep with the white noise of frogs, rain drops and geckos. If that’s not your thing use ear plugs after u try it.

Very basic and rustic stay

Bed was a thin matress on wooden stilts. Cobwebs on walls. Bathroom outside in a lean-to attached to bedroom. Very loud nature sounds between the birds, chickens, and frogs...ear plugs are a must. Just a screen door with a hook to lock when you are inside, otherwise no security. Very rustic, may be okay for some but was not for us. Owner seemed very nice and did provide a small breakfast in the mornings.
