We booked our stay at Barceló Tropical and when we checked in we were given rooms in Colonial. When we made our reservation we selected rooms with 2 beds but were assigned rooms with a single bed. According to the check in clerk that’s all they had and could not accommodate is. We had to share beds although we specifically booked separate beds during reservation. The a/c in the did not work properly for the whole 11 day stay. The restaurants were way over crowded and food quality wasn’t always good. They do not have enough lounging chairs at the beach and guests were carrying chairs from the pool to the beach. Iong lines at lunch dinner and at the bar which all seemed under staffed.
Great property, enjoyed the stay
Great resort. Huge, clean and great food.
Staff was accomodating, no pressure for anything. Great for a family or people who dont leave the resort. Always had service. We had some issues with our travel agent and the hotel stepped up and gave us multiple upgrades.
The hotel was big, but the rooms were small and outdated. The variety of food was good. However, the public restrooms were not clean. The beach access was great, and the excursions were well-organized. But there weren’t many evening programs.
Prepare to walk. Resort is HUGE. Food is OK everything else is Perfect. Tip good the bartenders and they will get you drunk HAHA Amazing time all in all 9/10
Horrible Horrible Horrible staff. Only 3 out of everyone there was nice. The rest, horrible service, couldnt say hi. If you asked a question, they would give you a dirty look and be bother about it. From the buffet staff, bartenders, lifesavers...like i said only 3 stuff members were nice. Horrible food at the buffets. To make reservations....everything was booked. Cleaning ladies were nice. Will never stay at a Barcelo again.
Todo me encanto de este hotel.
This is the 5th resort in Mexico we’ve stayed at and our least favorite. From fighting for beach chairs, no available dinner reservations, mediocre buffet, no free room service, limited bars, no breakfast or lunch a la carte restaurants, embarrassing NYE celebration and staff that are seemingly there to ensure you do what the hotel wants- this is just not a place we would go again.
No dinner reservations available all week; staff rude and unattentive and guest services was no help. No one seemed to care about guests, wait times or even where to get a meal. Oh, and if you have more than 4 people in your party you will never be able to sit together. Restaurants only had - few tables for 6 and refused to push any together to accommodate. Horrible experience all around.
Great resort. Would have liked the staff to be more informative about the activities the hotel offers, restaurants options etc.
We been here plenty of times and enjoy our stay. The size of the property is very large which works well for our family. I’m sure that we will be back.
We love our time at Barceló! It’s why we have come back 11 times!
The Barcelo Maya is a massive hotel on a stunning beach with great snorkeling and water sports, various water slides and swim up bars, huge pool areas and six hotels. We stayed at the Colonial although we booked at the Tropical and nobody explained that to us, a bit confusing. First off, although it’s an all inclusive, there are many things you have to pay for. Minigolf, bowling, go carts, waterpark etc are all not included but pretty expensive. A bit disappointing. Second, it was impossible to get a booking in any of the specialty restaurants so we are at the buffet every dinner which was a bit repetitive and mediocre. Drinks were weak and watered down. Third, although there are a lot of water sport options, they require to stand in line for an hour or more to sign up in the morning and then sometimes the conditions are not suitable when the time comes. We still had a wonderful time because we brought our own snorkel gear which we used daily for snorkeling around the beach area. We also walked over to the Cenote Azul which was magical. The staff were civil at best but not very friendly. A notable exception was Darinel our bar tender in the show bar who was very friendly and amazing. He made up for the unhelpful reception staff who didn’t explain anything to us upon check in and gave us a QR code which only showed a property map. Overall, the stay was fine but not as excellent as we had expected.
Hotels are overcrowded. No beach service. Dining reservations very limited. Staff communication issues. Buffets are far from beach area with long walking distance.
There is no ventilation on rooms, all clothes were wet and not getting dry enough. Not enough beach chairs, we came at 8 am and every spot was already taken, it was continuing through all stay.
premium level- transport- happy shuttle- since the hotels has to be booked at least 48 hrs prior and is also more expensive. -concierge pre-reserved the special restaurants steakhouse, Italian and Japanese. There is also seafood restaurant. Change the reservations if u want to. The Japanese restaurant is an experience. The food in the Italian exceeded expectations. - room has sliding bathroom doors which cant be locked. - book is in the room with all activities listed. We were also given a small list at check-in. All shows were good but The “Mexican fiesta” - excellent! - dolphinaris- The interaction with the dolphins was wonderful but the customer exp left a sour taste. The price is listed only in usd. If you are paying in another currency, they convert first to pesos and then to the relevant currency. We paid in cad. So the conversions gave a loss of 40 cad compared to converting directly from usd to cad. 1pic is 49usd digital OR printed. Insane! - Jet ski- absolutely great and a good experience overall. Photos turned out grt. -Zumba class, water aerobics- held by the pool bar. look at information /schedule by the pools. -The place and pools wer so well maintained they need special mention. rained th 1st night but by 9am the pools were clean. The grass is regularly trimmed, the trees maintained, the decks hosed down every evening and the cups left behind picked up. The place is extremely maintained considering the num of people. Tipping is appreciated.
We all had a wonderful time. This was our 12th time at this resort. We love it and can’t wait for our next trip back!
We stayed at Barcelo Tropical for 6 days, from Dec 14-20, . The area around the hotel, specially Caribe are very nice and accessible. At check in they insisted that they have no spots available for our group. They were not willing to upgrade us and only option was a downgrade for the same price. After insisting from us they magically found three rooms for our group. The hotel is dated and rooms are more like motel rooms. Staff are not friendly. Food options in the hotel are limited. Restaurants are so bad that after two restaurants we preferred to eat at the buffet. If you stay there avoid the restaurants and go to Caribe buffet which is much better quality.
Resort is great but they are no longer partnering with Expedia for the extra perks. When I booked we were to receive extras due to platinum status which we have many times in the past to arrive and be told Barcelo is no longer participating and the Expedia rep is no longer their either onsite.
The service at check in was pretty good at the premium office. However the overall service was pretty bad , including room service. Most of the people we spoke with at the resort was also complaining about the service

Dinner
The property was so clean and organized. It could be more options for foods.
Wonderful place to relax and reset from the chaos of daily life!
The property was kept clean and was visually appealing with lush vegetation. However, much of the staff seemed disgruntled and often times reflected in their attitude and service.
6 resorts connected together as if it was 1 HUGE resort, walked 10000 steps a day without feeling repetitive. Loads of activitys ( bowling / mini golf / go carts / flowrider surfing / movie theater) there is a mall on the property as well as a mini market where locals sell their product. food was great and staff were attentive, the french restaruant at the pallace was some of the best food ive ever had. I will defenitly be going back to this property. TEQUILA!
Wonderful.
The scenery
We absolutely loved this place!
Very nice!
The property grounds is very clean and spacious. We stayed in the Tropical section of the resort. The room is about a 3.5 but didn’t matter as we didn’t spend much time in it. Only a 3.5 as you can see that it needs some maintenance however it was clean. No issues there. The food is good. Had access to 4 section of the resort so had access to different buffets to eat at. Ate at the Italian and Japanese restaurants the food there was good. I would stay at this resort again.
Very nice!
very nice
Loved it
Great Vacation! Everything was great.
We enjoyed our stay. Food was great and there’s lots to do. However all additional costs. For the most part all the staff were friendly and helpful. We would go back again
We visit Mexico at least twice a year. This was our first stay at Barcelo. I never complain about the food because we know what to expect, not everyone likes everything but there's always something to love. I did just return 2 lbs overweight if that tells you anything. This is mega resort with lots to see and do. This property is super clean and super safe. I'd visit again Tropical and Colonial has best beach. Caribe and Beach have the best rooms. Bottom line. It was very good
Average resort
Buy bonito
The layout of the resort is excellent. Staff is really good and rooms are great.
The beach is amazing the food is so good
Our stay at the Barcelo Maya Tropical was just what was needed to relax and reset from the chaos of real life. The staff was all so friendly and the hotel has everything you need. Would definitely recommend to anyone!
The two theaters were great. Earlier show times would be better though.
Loved the people we met at the resort! Staff and other vacationers included!
Staff were very unhelpful, the property is outdated and limitied things to do.
Everyone was so nice, everything was always so clean, made my vacation so nice
Everything is good. The food quality in the buffet became more economical compared to past years. The WiFi is very poor at the property
Had an amazing time and will definitely go back, probably many times!
Great place overall Just language differences and not much food choices
it was very splendid and great place to vacation with my family
Friendly staff, beautiful grounds. What we like is that this resort is very large with multiple options for pools and food. The beach was in great condition. The water can be rocky at some points, but mostly clear and with abundance of fish near the rocks.
The infrastructure is awesome!! The only thing is the buffet it passed but nothing amazing or not full of flavor
Amazing staff and service! Beautiful beach with lots of dinning options. Plenty of kids options as well. Overall our stay was delightful
Awesome place love it
BARCELO RESORT IS DISASTER WORSE SERVICE IN WHOLE CANCUN AREA. EVEN WORSE MANAGEMENT. ESPECIALLY BARCELO TROPICAL MANAGER IS WORSE POSSIBLE PERSON My stay at this property was very poor.this was absolutely worse vacation and I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS RESORT
Enjoyed the many varied dining options; large expanse of walking areas, pools, amazing beach and swimming options.
Thank you for vacation!
Excellent property with nice beach and a lot of activities
The food was good with lots of choice. The beach and pools were very nice.
The food was not heated properly. We got to the buffet just as they opened and the food was not even warm. The omelette station undercooked the whites of the eggs, the whites were runny. Care was not taken in handling of the food. I killed a spider on the first day and it remained on the bathroom floor the duration of our six day stay.
The kids water park is awesome. The fantasy show they have for the kids is a plus. We really enjoyed the little shops that are by the hotel and the restaurants. The buffet had a variety of selection of food and was very delicious. This was our second time going and will be coming back.
El hotel muy bueno, el servicio no es muy bueno por todo el personal, la comida excelente y los tragos son pésimos no se puede pedir tragos
Not crowded at all, alot of seating by the pool and by the beaches - excellent
Great property. Dining could have been better but the property itself was great.
We liked that our room was cleaned everyday. Food options were good. The pools were nice to use. The beach was also nice and sandy, but once in the water, it was somewhat rocky.
Great pools and beach.
Great beach and pools!
I have been to Barcelo over 20 times now, sometimes more than once in a year! They are by far the best experience for beach, food and entertainment. The staff is amazing!
Staff were a bit rude but surrounding were lovely. The beds were not comfortable seemed like old mattresses
Rooms are not updated, pretty old for 2024, food doesnt have to many options, landscape and the view was breathtaking
I do recommend this hotel
OMG This hotel, especially the staff saved our vacation. We left another Hotel (Sandod Caracol) due to bed bugs and horrible service. But thank God for Barcelo Tropical. They saved our vacation. For the front desk to the waitstaff at the Buffet and not to mention our room staff. They were all amazing. Cirenio and Jose were the best one's. At first I didn't know they were brothers until my final night. I was not surprised because both gave excellent service. At the swim up bar, go see Jose. Best bar/pool service anyone can ask for. I cant wait until my next visit to Barcelo. Thank you all for saving our vacation and giving us the wonderful memories that will last a lifetime.
This resort was huge. It was a beautiful resort for the most part, the ocean/beach was spectacular! The pools were probably 90* - just a little too hot if you’re a pool person. The restaurants were okay - nothing to write home about. We were nervous about getting sick with stomach troubles as this was apparently an issue- all 7 of us made it home without any issues. The room we were in was clean and cool, AC worked well. Check in was a breeze as well as check out. The drinks were what you would expect for an all inclusive- not great.
After a great vacation in Barcelo Riviera Maya palace in 2023, we decided to come back for another family vacation. Unfortunately, all of us, group of 9, got food poisoning and ended up being restricted to our room for most of the stay. We only ate at Barcelo so know that it came from the food there. Most of us were confined for our entire duration and now back in the US, are still struggling to get back to normal. Truly disappointing as it should have been a great vacation.
Food not so good
Great hotel & clean, good foods and many pools to enjoy...
Best vacation spot
Amazing resort. Everything you need is there. The shows and performers are professionals of highest level! Amazing snorkeling right off the beach! Our favorite place to vacation!
Excellent service
Second time staying at this resort and our stay was okay. Pros: friendly staff, beautiful resort grounds Cons: food, rooms are old, musty smelling and need updates. Not able to make dinner reservations to more than 2 restaurants. Dirty pools. Dirty pool towels.
We traveled July. The beach was beautiful and clean, no sea weed.Property is very clean but all the staff is so overwhelmed due to the high volume of guests hosting the resort. We stay six nights and could get a single dining reservation. The buffet food is like a 5 of 10, in all the buffets ,the kids water park wasn’t working during the our stay, and we have to walked far to find other kids water park that we weren’t allowed. Once you check in , you are in your own, to find your room and property amenities no information is given to you, Two drinks at the time at the swim up bars, hard to find chairs at the beach’s or pools,
The hotel was amazing saw lots of sea animals on the beach as we were swimming , swam with the sea turtles and the Dolphins sanctuary was amazing
I liked everything except for the dining option. We were there for 6 days/5 nights and wasn't able to get a reservation at the Capri or Santa Fe because it was fully booked so we had to settle for the buffet. We were given 2 tickets to done at either places, it would have been nice if we were able to use it.
Overall, it is very good except dinning restaurants it's fair.
We always had several options for food. It was very clean and large with many options.
I got a wonderful time
The property was close to xplor and xcaret if you plan to go there.
We found the property well kept and clean. The buffets we good but not excellent. Food quality good but seemed like it was the same food every day. We stayed 5 nights yet when we checked in our two fine dining options were very limited, one being at 9:30 pm. Just too late for a heavy meal. Overall the staff was excellent, very helpful and polite. But … when I asked the front desk staff about the nearby casino they all acted like they had no idea what I was talking about … very dismissive of my question ! Also, we were careful with our keys as instructed yet every day we had to get fresh keys which seemed to annoy the front desk staff. Go figure .. I should have been the one annoyed ! The beach was amazing, the pools are Excellent, the activities seemed fun and engaging. We had a great trip overall. We would go back but will probably explore other properties first. Chj
Wonderful property. Perfect for couples or families.
We have so much fun as a family of three, we were able to enjoy all the activities, the food and the attention was really good!
The property is big and has a lot of amenities but most of them are extras, so its not really all inclusive outside of pool, beach and food. The property is different to other resorts in the area it has a lot of trees a lot of green which is actually something I did like, even though my room was not beachfront it was nice to see lots of palm trees and grass outside of our room, my son even got to see some animals. The big downside for me was the food it was definitely not worth the money I paid for it the food quality is terrible and due to it being so big and so many people its gross and there is not proper cleanup or proper switching of utensils.
So we arrived at tropical and he had trouble finding our reservation, once he did he realized it was because they upgraded us to the adults only resort! It was amazing! With the upgrade we were able to eat at every restaurant in all 6 resorts and no children at our resort! It was paradise! Never had trouble finding a lounge at the pool, food was great , reservations were great, check in with the move was less the 15 mins check out 5 mins! We will be going back!
The resort is beautiful and spacious. However, very disappointed when it came to the dining options there was no availability for my family (a party of 4). The resort is understaffed, had to always wait for drinks and the drinks are not even great. For it to be an all inclusive they fail to tell you at check in that there’s an upgrade to premium level that provides top shelf drinks, room service and a better room type. I had To pay for my rooms service which I have never done in an all inclusive resort. Our rooms were cleaned daily so that’s a plus, but my family and I did not feel welcomed. I will not be returning and will choose another resort next time.
The property over all is pretty. However, I think for it to be an all inclusive it is way under staff. Upon check in they failed to mention that there was a premium level if we wanted to upgrade. Upon checking out they mentioned that due to them being so busy they only focus on mentioning the important details. Premium level gets you a better room, top shelf liquor, room service and some type of massage in the spa. I have never been to an all inclusive where I had to pay for room service. Now let’s get to the most important part of my stay that made it unpleasant. Dining options!!!!! They give you a certain amount of coupons to use depending on the length of your stay. However, when you try to book the restaurant of your liking there is no availability. We wanted to try the steak house and they had no table for a party of 4. We had to settle for other 2 restaurants where the food was ok. I work in hospitality and I understand that at times there won’t be availability BUT there should be a better solution when it comes to the dining options for the restaurants. Customer service was ok, didn’t really feel welcomed and the people at the bar looked miserable and unpleasant. I wouldn’t come back to this resort. The resort pools and beach are pretty and spacious but the room service, the restaurants and customer service all failed.
Returning home today after a 7 day stay at Barcelo Maya Beach / Caribe / Colonial / Tropical / Palace (TROPICAL RESORT). This was my first time visiting and I want to leave an honest/unbiased detailed review of my experience. We have travelled as a family to Cancun 13 times and have stayed in various different resorts. Traveled with a group of 22 people ranging from 10-72 years old (we do this every year). This is a long post, I warn you! POSITIVES: - Arrived on a Wednesday at lunch time and all of us completed our check in in less than 20 min. We were all prepared for the worse given the comments here. - The resort grounds are incredibly clean - After 7 days, nobody in our party got sick (which was another concern given the many negative food experiences described in this group.) - THE BEACH!!!! Having visited so many times I can say with confidence that this was the most beautiful beach I’ve been to other than Isla Mujeres. No seaweed, not too many waves and very clean sand! There is also lots of corals for snorkeling. - Watching the sunrise by the dock! Espetacular!!! - Cenotes across the street are a must! Careful with crossing the road! NEGATIVES: - Staff isn’t very friendly nor willing to help. After check in you are pretty much on your own as far as finding your room and your way around a massive resort complex! No maps or basic info is provided upon checking in and there is no interest from the people there to help you get situated. - Size: for some it might be ok
Was there for 5 days last week. Bathroom had no fan, room needs furniture updates. And drinks at pool area was not the best. Lack of stuffing for the people
We had a pleasant stay at Barcelo Maya Tropical recently. The beaches and pools were magnificent, and it was an exceptionally family-friendly resort. Our room was spotless and well-maintained. The staff members were incredibly friendly and professional. The only aspect that could be improved is the food. The food was just ok but not great. Also restaurants were hard to book for larger groups.
Everything old, not properly working

Beautiful, clean, we loved everything about it
