Very nice hotel surrounded by nature. The staff was absolutely amazing. Greeted when you walk in cared for by concierge. Rooms were clean and property was well maintained. I would definitely recommend and as an extra treat for yourself by going and enjoying some of their great spa services!
The staff were very friendly and helpful. Decor and environment was superb but a little tired in places. Rooms were very hot. Spa was too busy to use when wanted.
Poor spa. Terrible, overpriced food.
The spa was not up to basic standards. Steam room was cold. Sauna was cold without water to top it up. Restaurant food was overpriced at £35:£40 per meal. It came cold. When informed staff, food was taken away, warmed under the grill and returned 20 mins later. This was a fish dish, so basically inedible.. The decor was dated and cheap looking. Terrible value for money overall.
Great food and service. Some areas of the property are tired for example the staircase carpet but we did enjoy our stay as the food and service was excellent.
Beautiful hotel with excellent service.
A beautiful building with welcoming log fires. The hotel is very comfortable and every member of staff went out of their way to be helpful with my disabled husband. They were unfailingly cheerful and created a lovely atmosphere.
Birthday celebration
The stay has been amazing, we haven’t found fault in anything. The food has been great and service throughout the hotel exceptional. The surrounds are beautiful and relaxing. The only thing I will mention about the spa towels were left on chairs all around with no one using them, this made seating very limited.
Disappointing
Our Garden Suite was fabulous but food main courses were cold, extremely slow service, for desserts and drinks at spa. Relaxation room cold and disappointing 85min massage.
Unfortunately it wasn’t the 5 star experience we are used to when staying at Alexander house when it came to the room and restaurant. The staff are all amazing though and will immediately fix any issues raised. Was just shame on first impressions when walking into a very tired room which was nowhere near worthy of a 5 star category - even if it was the basic room. We had a broken iron, broken plug sockets, wallpaper peeling from ceiling and walls, cracks apparent everywhere and just very tired woodwork/tiles throughout. Management were great and moved us to a junior suite for the trouble and were also in agreement with us. As for the restaurant, there were also issues here. We ordered the £100 cote du beouf, which not only came out to us 50 minutes after ordering, but was stone cold along with all of the side dishes. It took another 2 attempts to get this right, the second time the waiter said he didn’t even bring it out to us when he checked the temperature first. I guess third time lucky is always a charm but obviously we were waiting well over an hour by now for our food. The manager was kind enough to give us the bottle of wine we ordered on the house for the issues. We were celebrating joint birthdays (big 40) so it was a bit of a shame to experience the above, but the staff did what they could to still make it special so thank you.
Location
Beautiful property both inside and out with nice parking
Just had a wonderful stay at Alexander House. The room was amazing, the Spa was excellent and the staff were really friendly. I'll definitely return again.
Great stop over close to Gatwick. Beautiful pools at the spa to help with jet lag Great dining options
Fabulous
Stunning
This place was better than expected no need to leave the property! Wish we did 2 nights here
Lovely hotel in beautiful surroundings .
Couldn't fault the place. Fantastic
Beautiful property. Pricey dining but t just ok food. Need reservations. Time rooms with late start breakfast. No under 18 allowed at any of the spa facilities which wasn’t clear on website and very much limited our experience
Beautiful hotel. Great service. Loved it!
It was far below a 5-star experience
Highly recommend
Excellent stay. Comfortable room, quality toiletries, air con etc. Spa visit a must. Relaxed dress code. Staff excelent in all areas. Lovely garden and terraced seating
Lovely property, lovely spa. Receptionist not very friendly or helpful. We were told the Spa was an extra £20.00 per person per day of use. This was not put on the booking Website. We paid £880.00 for 2 nights stay and thought the extra was excessive. Lovely but would not stay again.
Lovely stay in the hotel. A great get away for a few days in a beautiful surrounding area.
Excellent spa hotel. Food go9d not great
Lovely Stay at Alexander House
We loved our stay at the Alexander House!! The staff was extremely helpful and kind and it was a very comfortable stay. Thank you!
It is a good place but it starting to get run down a bit, needs sprucing up to bring back the wow factor it had before
Amazing grounds and hotel. The spa was fantastic
Stunning Hotel
Stunning stay start to finish. Spa was beautiful not too busy but enough people for atmosphere. Would highly reccomend this hotel who anyone who likes a touch of class.
Lovely location grwat facilities staff are very helpful 😀
Luxury
May Night
What an absolutely wonderful hotel and Spa! We upgraded to Garden Room and this was stunning with balcony. Food was great and reception staff very welcoming and professional!
Very nice property, but considering the price wouldn’t expect to pay to go in the spa. Also tried charging me for the room on my card even tho it had been paid for in advance. Nice place to go, but wouldn’t go again!
Manage your expectations
This is a pricy hotel. Staff were welcoming and affable and I certainly don't fault their service. What I do fault are the 'basics'. An expensive hotel that charges £20 per person per day to use the pool? Unreasonable and quite frankly a joke if you're there for 'the weekend'. A gym that doesn't have a treadmill? We've had hotels without gyms but this is the most basic of basics Unusable WiFi in the room? It's 2024! Overall I feel we've paid a premium price for an underdeveloped product.
Good location; great wine options; friendly reception staff and nice rooms.
The staff were absolutely amazing, they were attentive and very friendly. They catered well for us (vegan). I love the attention to detail, our room had alternative milk (plant based), special birthday treat for my wife and we were upgraded to a luxury room (complimentary). I cannot fault anything, this was just perfect from start to finish.
A little bit tired, spa treatments were average, not enough staff for the number of customers. There are definitely better spa options available in the area.
Good overall but some areas could be improved. Staff v friendly and helpful. Spa is great, clean and never feels overcrowded.
Was okay, wouldn’t stay again.
Booked for our anniversary, was shocked that we would not have spa access outside of our check in/check out time without paying for early check in/late check out. I have never experienced this before when staying in a spa hotel. We had asked for non-alcoholic sparkling wine for the room and where not given the product that was quoted (we had a bottle that retails at 1/3 of the price but was still charged the quoted amount). During our stay we had afternoon tea, it took 3 attempts to get a drink order right which just seemed wasteful. Overall the service was okay, but nothing outstanding or screams 5 star. I have stayed in other spa hotel with better service. I wouldn’t stay again.
We will be back soon!
Fantastic time on one of the hotest days of the year! The hotel and grounds are stunning, the spa is spectacular and fill of surprises, including a cool pool, male and female facilities and shared facilities, jacuzzis you can rent privately and a £20pp to use the spa per night (this wasnt in the description, but fair enough. You can ever have drinks from the bar in the hot tubs! We booked a stunning tasting menus, and were able to share it under the stars due to the temperature. Impeccable service and food, a little dark, but we loved the ambience so much! The wine pairing menu was both fascinating and delicious, and the knowledge of the servers was incredible. The room and bathrooms were beautifully decorated, and we were given a mobile AC too because of the weather and the age of the building. The bathroom could have been cleaner, the shower and bath were not as clean as i would have hoped, but otherwise an almost perfect stay! Oh and breakfast i would do again, fresh and delicious and a slight break from tradition too! I would love to add how well they catered for my partners gluten allergy too! We will be back soon!
Stunning hotel with amazing service - first class
The staff are absolutely first class! This is a really fabulous hidden away hotel and it's a beautiful setting. Whilst i was on business i didnt get chance to use the spa but it looked amazing. The rooms were lovely and beds/bedding extremely comfortable. Little touches like Google assistant in your room, filtered water and fresh milk in the fridge. I could not fault this place. Next time I want to stay in one of the suites as they are stunning.
Had an amazing trip. The treatments I had were fantastic. Dinner and breakfast were lovely, a couple of niggles, the vegetarian breakfast could have been hotter. I sat at the same table for all meals, and the same traces of food down the side of the seat from when I first had dinner hadn’t been cleaned up, and a few splashes of something on the wall also.
Couldn’t fault anything about this place.
Beautiful hotel in lovely grounds
Beautiful hotel with lovely clean comfortable rooms. The spa is nicely appointed. Grounds are lovely.
Very overpriced hotel
Feel the hotel is very over priced. The setting is beautiful, but when you move through the communal areas the rooms / corridors are shabby and the decor outdated. A hotel charging these rates should have far higher standards. Breakfast was very disappointing, it took over 40 minutes for it to be delivered. When it came, I had a very sad looking vegetarian sausage, some overcooked spinach, 3 very small / sad looking bits of potato etc. etc. Really wasn't good enough. Also the breakfast room was dark, dingy with wood effect wall paper on the walls. Just not good enough for a hotel charging these rates
Great couples retreat.
What a wonderful place.. The only issue here was that we only booked one night and should have done two.. The spa is just fabulous and every member of staff is fantastic.. There is not much more to say except if you want a fab place to stay to chill and get out of the city. Just come here. Well worth it.
Excellent service from the team.
Service 5*
It is mice to have good service On arrival concierge at the car Reception fesk fully personef Any request quickly sorted
This is my third visit to this property and I was still impressed with the ease of checking in , the friendleness & helpfulness of the Staff. The room was impressive & well worth the price charged. The bath was divine.
Not quite as it looks.
Not as nice as it looks, a bit poky and probably 40-50% overpriced. Charging for the spa feels like price-gouging.
Amazing spa, one of the best I’ve been to would highly recommend it.
Lots of lovely furnishings and comforts (lovely robes etc). Some more investment in the property required to up the maintenance levels and make the older (and charming) rooms completely successful. I wouldn’t have been disturbed by the air con units outside my room if the windows had been double glazed. Continental breakfast was perfectly acceptable but uninspired.
Staff all friendly and helpful so can’t fault them but hotel itself is a bit tired and not the look and feel of a 5 star hotel so prices should reflect this. Room had large stains on the carpet and pillows so won’t be returning any time soon.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The staff were friendly and both the food and the facilities excellent. I booked the Alexander because we had been before and I new it would be a great place to celebrate my Wife's birthday and it was. Thank you all for making her birthday wonderful.
Lovely room, huge bathroom! Disappointed about how noisy the room was, must have been above the kitchens - the hum of the extraction fan could be heard through earplugs. We also needed to request a heater as the room was cold - it arrived quickly and did just the trick.
It was in a nice location and the staff were helpful in terms of facilitating a dog friendly room. Only problem is I was booked for a 45mins body massage and only got about 37mins, even tho it’s not a big difference but for £125 I would expect the full time. Apart from that a lovely stay all in all.
Beautiful country hotel with wonderful spa facilities including an outdoor jacuzzi and sauna. The rooms need to be checked before guests arrive, our room had a problem with drainage in the shower and the safe was not closing.
Very good, could be outstanding…
Stunning location, plenty of parking and the main building is lovely. The grounds are very pretty (although we felt weren’t being maintained as they could have been to bring the feel of the outside space up to a level commensurate with a good 5 star hotel). We were upgraded into a luxury room which was very nice and very welcome. The room was beautifully appointed and characterful with a lovely bathroom. The food we had was very nice, service in the Reflections restaurant not as good as it could have been. We felt a bit rushed and perhaps expected a bit more of a personal service. The Utopia spa was very pleasant. Busy on our first day with lots of spa day clients taking all but one of the pool beds but on our second day, it always much quieter and very enjoyable. The outdoor sauna and hot tub in particular were lovely, just a bit of garden maintenance would have made it truly stunning. We will definitely return though.
Not what it used to be!
Previously stayed and great experience. But this time was not impressed and quite disappointed, room wasn’t very clean and carpet was all stained. Outside area needed a good clean and cushions to sit on. Hair on the bedding that was not mine. Good also wasn’t that great. I wouldn’t rate a 5 star hotel anymore and wouldn’t stay again sadly. Due to it being so unclean. (There was also food under the bed, I only know this as our one year old was trying to get it!!). But staff was very nice.
Hotel staff were very nice. Room was clean/nice but was lacking proper air conditioning. We had a portable unit that you add ice too which did not cool the room or provide ventilation so it was not great for sleeping.Opened the windows but there was no breeze. The hotel restaurant had very good food, drink service was on the slow side. Breakfast was great. I would stay again in the summer only if I could get a room with good a/c.
Nice room but no AirCon.
Really beautiful‘s day. Interesting to note that the spa is not included anymore if you book via Expedia it’s additional £20 a person per night. We also walk to a local pub rather than eat in the hotel as we meeting in the hotel before we wanted to try something different. It was only a mile to walk up the road to a local pub. The spa an outside is a lovely addition to this hotel the rooms are clean small but very functional. This is a go to local spa hotel for us
A Sussex gem
On arrival, the front of house manager came out to offer a greeting and a porter was immediately there to take the bags. The check in was flawless, the spa and grounds fabulous and AG's tasting menu truly scrumptious. Room service rapid, precise and polite. Throughout, the service was impeccable. My only negative? The in-room refrigerator door was positioned in a manner that made it hard to open! The stay here was dictated by a morning Gatwick departure, but this place merits being a destination. In an era where most hotels are wretched beyond belief, it is wonderful to stay somewhere that still aspires to delivering a great experience. Thank you Alexander House!
It was awewome, staffs were polite and helpful and always meeting you with a smile. I'll surely be visiting again
Eventhough we paid for late check out, cleaners were making lot of noise in morning. The hotel has 5 star rating however the room had no Modern TV, room was without phone. Spa was ok n bathroom in the room was good
Beautiful mini moon
We stayed here for our mini moon. The hotel was luxurious, clean and comfy. Our concierge really looked after us by upgrading our room, complimentary champagne and arranging for the room to be decorated with rose petals. The only thing I would say is the spa is an additional cost per day per adult which makes the overall stay quite pricey. Thank you to the staff for going over and above.
Beautiful hotel with amazing service
Lovely hotel, great spa and friendly service. We will return.
A relaxed stay overall
Enjoyed the stay. The staff were friendly, courteous and attentive. Perhaps more could be made of the grounds. There were cycles and wellies to use, but no real indication of where to go or not go. Loved the venue, location and facilities As with all these places, getting spa slots can be tricky and the restaurant wasnt anle to accommodate us on our second night at a reasonable time of the evening. Whilst the food was excellent, perhaps some more 'healthy' options could be incorporated hiven the spa and health resort nature of the venue. The room was beautiful and there are modern suites too. Some catch up maintenance is needed in places. Overall a good stay and a welcome break in a quiet setting.
An incredible amazing building, nothing is too much trouble for the lovely friendly staff. Room luxurious, food so delicious, would highly recommend.
Overall disappointing
An overall disappointment. It felt like all staff were lacking in training, there is seemingly no lunch menu and the lack of healthy food options is unbelievable. Great room though and with better management this would be great
Couple Stay - ok
Couple stay overnight. Treatments were fully booked and could not experience. No sign posts for walks. Outdoor sauna was not working. Food was okay, not a big selection but it is reasonably priced. Overall okay but expected more for £400+ a night.
Stunning views and beautiful grounds around the property. Disappointment was finding well-established spider's web in bedroom and bathroom of one of the most luxurious suites. House keeping need to keep a close eye on this aspect, otherwise fantastic!
Amazing hotel
Excellent weekend away! Hotel looks just like the photos and exceeded expectations! Would definitely stay again.
Disappointing long weekend stay
We feel this 5* hotel is resting on it's reputation. There is no atmosphere. Staff can't even smile or acknowledge you. There were 2 members of staff who I could say were happy and welcoming (other than the Spa where the therapists were fantastic). The restaurant fish 'Special' was pretty much the same variation on the same theme for 3 nights running. And it was not nice at all, soba noodles with broth and a piece of trout on the top was a very strange combination. The Continental breakfast pastries tasted stale (I tried the croissants, the pain aux raisins and the pain au chocolat), which is a surprise considering that there should be a Patissière in house because of the quantity of afternoon teas being served. The breakfast (and the coffee) was so bad, I had no choice but to drive to the local Cafe Nero to purchase good strong hot coffee and some freshly baked pastries. There was no point complaining within the hotel because it was very clear that they were incapable of making any changes, and we didn't want to ruin our (much needed) long weekend away. Suffice to say, having given this hotel 2 goes, we will not be residing again and I will not be recommending this hotel either. It should definitely not be a 5 star hotel.
I loved the history of the building and it's beautiful surroundings
The grounds are beautiful and the spa facilities excellent. There was a slight issue with noise due to a wedding but the Manager was very compensating and ensured that we were well looked after. Overall, an excellent 5* stay and we will definitely return!
The hotel was amazing, Beautiful and clean. The outside area is stunning. We enjoyed sitting in the garden and relaxing. Even though we had to pay extra for the spa, it was worth it. Stunning spa with the most amazing outdoor spa garden. I would definitely go back!
Nice hotel, good restaurant.
Disappointing not 5 star
The hotel room furnishings were dated. The informal restaurant service was very slow and you could see the dirty dishes in the kitchen area. Not very 5 star.
We had a lovely stay but food and drink is overly expensive and not good value for money
Definitely not a 5 star
Definitely not 5 star. Terrible WiFi and service. Most of the waiters and waitresses were undergoing training. Communication between departments and spa is very poor. It’s very nice for a day trip or lunch but I wouldn’t stay there again. Although the beds were really comfortable.
Just a beautiful building & surrounding grounds provide for stunning views
For the price we paid for one night I could of stayed at a 5* hotel in central London for the room we had (spa room) it did not warrant nearly £400 I wouldn’t recommend for the price
Relaxing spa break with a few little niggles.
Relaxing spa break with a few little niggles mainly relating to issues in the spa. On the whole could not fault the quality of the facilities and the staff were clearly trying hard to deliver a high level of service.
Beautiful & good food
Beautiful hotel, it’s a shame that as a hotel guest you then have to pay £20 p/p to enter the spa area. Food was delicious and everyone was very helpful.
Had a Fantastic time, took my partner her for his birthday surprise. The hotel was lovely and clean. Because of COVID we had to book a time slot for the spa which wasn’t an issue, has a great time using the spa facilities Breakfast In the morning was lovely Would definitely recommend and would definitely stay again!!!
Nice location, very expensive for what you get.
Positives - Hotel location was really great, staff were lovely and the walk in its grounds was beautiful. Negatives - Rooms were a bit tired, not really worth what we paid (the price didn’t even include breakfast) and I was very surprised that the on-site spa was an additional change of £20 per person per day for access. Have never stayed at a Spa Hotel where this is considered an extra. The restaurant was ok - but very expensive for the food quality, likewise £17.50 for their cocktail menu is a bit ambitious!
A perfect stay in every way. Wonderful rooms great food excellent staff
We stayed here for our anniversary. We’ve been here (a few years back) for afternoon tea and spa day and actually thought it was decent. Booked again as a last minute anniversary getaway but was really disappointed with the stay. Its definitely not a 5* hotel - didn’t feel like one anyway (not sure what a 5 red star means). 1. Checked in - told us the name of our room and we had to go look for it. Was on the second floor tucked away behind the stair case. Oh and no welcome drinks. Thought that was standard for a 5* but maybe I am wrong. 2. No AC. I know we are in the UK but come on... we was given this mini fan which didn't do anything for the heat. The window latches were broken so the window wouldn't stay open on its own. 3. The bed - the most uncomfortable bed I have ever slept on... the mattress was horrible but the pillows were worse. It ruined what I got from the massage. 4. Fridge didn't work - the fridge seemed to warm the water. Curtain and walls had coffee stains on them. 5. Massage was decent, spa facilities were decent. But again they just tell you to walk out to lobby. No towel or drinks after. It just didn't feel luxury at all if I am completely honest. Maybe its because of the lockdown and everyone is still finding their way again. But was just really disappointed with the stay - I guess if we didn't stay it would’ve been ok. The hotel staff were actually nice and I wouldn't fault them - the hotel and its service overall, is just tired.
Beautiful hotel and clean , was worth the price that‘ we paid
Beautiful. Great staff, really grateful for their help, and fantastic rooms. Loved it.
Lovely relaxing stay. Unnecessarily expensive food menus however
Perfect retreat
This was the perfect retreat to relax and unwind in a stunning country setting. Lovely spa and very spacious and comfortable rooms.
Nice place, had 4 star feel rather than 5. Exterior grounds beautiful. Staff very willing to help but service was not always on point (waited 50 mins for lunch, forgot to deliver our newspaper to room, no robes in room when we checked in). Spa facilites were nice but over crowded on a Saturday, some people didn't have beds to lay on or drop their stuff.
lovely stay
Absolutely beautiful hotel. Great staff and stunning location.
Peaceful, relaxing and with good intentions
Beautiful place with very good spa and walking routes. Exceptionally clean and good food, very quiet and restful. Staff tried to be very helpful but execution not as good as intention - service often very slow and not thorough, for example hotel tour offered but actually interrupted, variety of refreshments but a pot of tea took over 30 minutes at a not busy time etc
Wonderful hotel and facilities. The staff were very friendly and keen to assist however many were very junior/new and lacked experience/finesse. The spa on Saturday was very busy but still enjoyable.
Excellent food. Clean facility. We are happy to go back again.
Great!
Helpful staff with a professional touch with great customer service in a lovely venue. Food and drinks great also with various rooms to decide where to relax. Good sized rooms.
We had a great stay! I highly recommend Alexander House Hotel and Spa.
Spa facilities excluded (pool, etc.) and expensive
Only disappointed that the spa facilities were an extra £20 pp, the bar was very expensive (£15 for a gin and tonic) and breakfast was not included and instead an extra £20 each. Otherwise it remains one of my favourite hotels, but they should address the above or we may not book again.

It’s a nice property but does not really achieve a 5 star level. The building is very nice but the interior design lacks the level of elegance of a 5-star property. We stayed in a garden room in the new building which was very large but not particularly well laid out. The restaurant tables were small and crammed and the food was ok but overpriced.
