Lovely hotel, however not warned of internet issue
Beautiful hotel and lovely staff, unfortunately internet had been down days prior to my arrival. Sadly I was not informed before arriving and as this was a business trip, lack of internet affected by trip / work schedule.
Stately home
Great place to stopover (we had a long trip from southern England to northern Scotland). Very dog friendly with beautiful parks for the dogs to run. It just feels like you’re staying in a stately home.
Lovely house and grounds. All the staff friendly and helpful. The food was really good as well. Id recommend getting to Springkell via Eaglesfield direction as gps navigation can send you the wrong way. I think the house and grounds are being restored very well.
We were really impressed with Springkell as soon as we approached it from the driveway and even more impressed with the interior of the hotel. This is a 1st class hotel and we really enjoyed our time at Springkell. In particular the common areas are stunning with magnificent plaster mouldings on the ceilings and a really special main staircase. If I would change anything at all I would install a bell push to call for assistance at the reception desk as it is not always manned. Although the driveway is very bumpy, it is well worth this minor inconvenience. I would definitely recommend Springkell and we will be returning next time we’re visiting this area of Scotland.
Absolutely beautiful
Service, food and accommodation were excellent. All staff were extremely helpful. Very good value for such an amazing property.
We chose Springkell because it was a stately home and we had not stayed in one. The man who booked us in was excellent. He works at the hotel for a summer holiday job. He gave us lots of information about the hotel's history. We enjoyed our stay and breakfast was very good. The only disappointing aspects were our room was ridiculously small, the mattress was soft and you rolled into the middle of the bed. We were not very hungry and only had soup and entree type food and a cheese platter. What we ate apart from the soup, was very poor in quantity and flavour. The cheese platter was a disgrace. I did mention this on checking out and hope they improve this for future guests. Apart from our couple of disaapoint, ents with food and our room the ambience of the house is worth a stay.
The hotel is nice food good breakfast good but the only negative i have is the road up to hotel is terrible needs to be resurfaced as pot holes everywhere if you want a quiet stay this is it far away from any roads
I dont usually leave reviews, but I have to say how stunning this hall hotel & cottages are. We stayed in Stables cottage as there are 5 of us. We had a gorgeous, unbelievably equipped kitchen with everything you need. Every device was high end. The nain bed is huge, emperor size i think. Im used to a King size, but this was beautiful. The bathroom is stunning, with a fab walk in shower & ckaw footed bath. The grounds are stunning, with secluded woods, a huge field with football nets, which our boys loved. There also a huge trampoline. The Hall Hotel was beautiful. A hidden gem!
All of the staff at Springkell were really attentive and helpful. The room was well appointed and the bed was really comfortable. Breakfast was fantastic.
One night stopover
It was lovely quiet hotel. Beautiful views from the dining room. Our room had no view Lovely comfortable bed and pilllows. Lovely breakfast.
Lovely well kept grounds and Hotel
Everything was perfect. Thank you very much!
Loved the Character
The staff were wonderful - so nice and helpful. Always checking to make sure we had what we needed. We loved the old historic feel to the building yet our room was newly remodeled. The 2 breakfasts and 1 dinner we had were excellent and tasty. We would highly recommend and would certainly come back if we ever return to Scotland.
Pleasant location and surroundings. Cleanliness of bathroom and communal toilet areas was disappointing. Nice breakfast and comfortable 4 Poster bedroom. No water or biscuits in room was a surprise. Staff very friendly and helpful.
A great stay on our travels. A luxury hotel at a reasonable rate.
2 Night Stay
Great staff, very good breakfast. Room was warm and very clean. Bed was comfortable.
Quick stop from motorway journey
Super hotel situated in wonderful countryside. Friendly and attentive staff made us feel really welcome.
Loved Springkell!
We loved Springkell! The grounds were amazing and we really enjoyed the tranquility and space. Staff were all very friendly and helpful and the room was very spacious with wonderful views of the grounds. Excellent dinner and breakfast too. It was very
Great
Accommodation great. Beautiful surrounds. Very comfortable bed. Breakfast Very good. Staff excellent. Evening meal good but pricey. Other meal options about 20mins at least away.
Beautiful site, the staff were welcoming and helpful. Everyone in my party loved this place.
Lovely staff, great view from the room
not luxury but a country side experience 4/5
You shouldn't expect luxury but a piece of history and the country side life, The road to the hotel absolutely terrifying, no light and no asphalt with lots of holes and bumps, you definitely need a carwash after driving there which I believe that should be a thing to be notify before traveling there. They need a sign on entrance as the nice photo of the hotel is actually the rear of the building without any access.
Beautiful country house, food excellent friendly staff quiet safe countryside
Fantastic hotel experience.
What an absolutely lovely hotel, only stopped overnight but during the stay the staff were fantastic, nothing was too much trouble for them. Will definitely stay there again.
A nice find
We recently stayed at Springkell for one night en-route to the Cairngorms. We booked the romantic double room which was very nice. Lovely and clean and comfortable.
Lovely property and staff
We'll be back.
Magical stay. Lovely grounds, real historic vibe. Beautiful furnishing and delicious breakfast. Had dinner, very tasty. Thank you to Jill, Annette, Chloe and the rest of the team.
A great “little” find in the border’s countryside!
I don’t normally leave reviews but I wanted to on this occasion. I was going to say a “little” gem in the borders countryside but it’s not very “little”! A lovely historic and welcoming hotel. Staff very friendly and accommodating. Food was great! Set in stunning countryside. A place you could easily loose yourself for a few days. Will definitely be back!
Made a journey stop over into a holiday.
A last minute stop on a long journey and we happened upon a gem. Lovely room that was a little noisy was changed without fuss to a superb alternative - wow. Bed was amazingly comfortable. Really made the journey one of the best parts of the holiday. Lovely breakfast in the morning set us up for the rest of the drive. Pleasant and helpful staff are a real credit to the management.
Great location
Wonderful location
What a gem. Staying at a manor like Springkell was a highlight of our trip. My wife thought about Pemberly from Pride and Prejudice when we stayed there. It was a wonderful place to stay en route from Scotland to the Lake District.
Some good, some slightly negative - I'd stay again
Good points: fabulous building steeped in History. Excellent evening meal - despite the cost it was worth it as it was really 5*. Big comfortable bed. Friendly staff. Slight negatives: I didn't realise I was in room 5 - the only room with a private bathroom across the hall. Next time I would book one with an en suite. Getting dressed to walk across the hallway was irritating and in the middle of the night, inconvenient. No proper shower but I did enjoy having a bath. Would have liked some herbal teas as I don't drink coffee or black tea. Strangely the breakfast was not very good - the cooked part. It's obviously prepared beforehand as I asked for well cooked bacon and it wasn't. The sausage was not great. Strange as the meal the night before was fabulous. Only other point to mention is that it's off the beaten track but there are a lot of pubs within short driving distance if you prefer to eat in one. I would stay here again, it's a fabulous building and the bed was excellent.
Magnificent building. Friendly service, comfortable room impressive bath👍. Evening meal great, breakfast great. After dinner scotch was an effort for the waitress, she was brilliant and got there after a bit of mountain climbing, hazardous😳. Check in and out were easy. The only negative was the surface on the drive, but can appreciate that surfacing that length of drive would be prohibitively expensive.
We had an amazing weekend staff are the best hotel is outstanding food is beautiful rooms are comfortable and very clean
Chauffeurs Cottage
We had a lovely stay in chauffeurs cottage, comfortable, clean, a tasty evening meal and breakfast with genuinely friendly staff and service
They are kind, trying but not well organized. Missing hand towels, sort of clean a bit dusty. Kind staff again, seemed understaffed and very young. Totally sold out, I hate give them low marks.
Nice hotel in lovely grounds
Lovely stay at Springkell. The best thing about this place is the staff. Everyone was friendly, welcoming and helpful they truly are a credit to the hotel. The hotel itself is set in beautiful well kept grounds, care needs taken on the driveway up to the house as the road has a lot of potholes. We stayed in room 6, it didn't have a view from the window but was clean and comfortable. The bathroom was spacious with a large shower cubicle. The temperature in the shower was quite difficult to get right but we got there in the end. If we stay there again I would book a superior room for additional space/seating. We had dinner the first night of our stay and freshly cooked breakfast each morning was good. Nice to be able to have the dog with us and she enjoyed her walks in the grounds and surrounding area.
Loved the property. Some shared room furniture tattered and not looking like it belongs it a house of such grandeur. Same for the folding table legs visible in dining area. Parcels like mattresses in the foyer and entrance way, etc...However, staff exceptional, rooms wonderful, and meals excellent. I wish them well as they continue to make improvements and flourish. We will be back!
Hidden Gem
Fabulous property, great staff, great setting, A hidden gem in the Scottish Borders, just off the M74. Food was beautifully cooked & the bar well stocked.
lovely hotel
Beautiful hotel - Bedroom too cosy for us
Our double deluxe room was too small for the bed so it was up against one wall with no room for side tables so a bit awkward to navigate. The bed was very comfortable the bathroom was good and the television was a good size. The public rooms were very appealing, the gardens gorgeous and there was a lovely relaxed atmosphere.
Found by accident as we needed an overnight stop somewhere near the A74 to break the long journey south but ... ...what an amazing Hotel! It has been lovingly converted from a family home into a wonderful guest experience by keeping so much of the home in place. The entrance hall sets the tone, it has to be seen. The room with its forteen foot ceilings was comfortable and clean, the ensuite brilliant. As for the grounds, they are superb. The formal garden below the lounge and reached down sweeping stone steps is wonderful. The grass lands beyond a joy to walk through and the woods and drives around the hall worth an explore. We only spent the one night there but we will be back.
Be advised
I felt obliged to post a review of this hotel due to our recent experience. The hotel itself is a fine building and very grand. The rooms are elegant in proportion and spacious. Most of the staff were helpful with the odd exception. Points to note - once you arrive you will not want to leave, not because it is wonderful, but because of the horrendous journey up the very long drive way to the hotel. This was a driveway unlike no other! Big chunks of gravel interspersed with potholes, and the dust created means our white car is now very beige. Dog friendly - is all well and good but please do not leave your dog in your room when you go for your meal. The dog barking was incessant at times and seemed to echo around the building. The rooms - no fancy extras here. No bottled water, just basic tea bags and coffee sachets, not a biscuit in sight. No toiletries apart from a bottle of soap on sink, on bath and in shower. 1 hand towel and 2 bath towels for 2 people. The breakfast - very basic. Maybe because it was a sunday but the juice wasnt fresh, the continental was limited and the full scottish breakfast was not the best. Cold toast and cold beans and not very appetising sausages. Previous reviews have all been very good so maybe we were just unlucky.
Beautiful property in fabulous grounds. Welcoming friendly staff.Lovely atmosphere Will certainly visit again for longer. Very dog friendly. All in all a superb find.
Beautiful country hideaway
Very reasonable room rate for early summer Friday, lovely old house in beautiful surroundings renovated to a comfortable hotel. Owner James was very helpful on the phone when I was delayed and arriving after 11pm, taking time to explain where the electric car charger was. Breakfast was included in room rate and nice quality. Will stay again.
You MUST experience Springkell
Our first stop in Scotland and we could not have made a better choice than Springkell
Stately home stay
How amazing to stay in such an historic place. So comfortable friendly and authentic. We loved our stay thank you and will return
One Night Stopover
One night stopover en route to Oban. Fabulous stay. Very comfortable. Friendly staff. Very nice evening meal and best breakfast ever. The building has many interesting features and is maintained well. Nice gardens but a bit early in the season to see them in full glory (early May). Would happily return for another stay.
Beautiful place and food. Staff were wonderful.
Stayed overnight on our way back down south. Beautiful place to stay. Had a lovely walk in the grounds before a drink in the bar. Had a beautiful meal in the evening and was finished off with our Scottish breakfast in the morning. Highly recommended.
The best place we have stayed in on this vacation.
An absolutely incredible stay. The facility is fit for royalty. The rooms top notch. The bathroom was the best I have experienced in my trip to date. Had supper and breakfast and both were on white table clothes and appropriate number of knifes and forks. The staff were super nice and even though they were preparing for a wedding, they always had time for us. The grounds around the hotel were beyond description. This is a destination where you want to spend some quiet time. Villages are close but you have to drive
A secret gem of the UK.
Always my favourite place to stay. Will go out of the way just to stay here. Everything is absolutely fantastic. The staff, the accommodation, the dinner, the breakfast, the grounds. 11/10. 6* Can’t recommend highly enough. Almost don’t want to share this place in case I can’t get a reservation!
Lovely room, friendly staff. Very quiet and peaceful with lovely views. Our evening meal was very good. Would love to go back again.
Easy to find. Spacious building. Good food. Friendly and helpful staff.
Lovely place
Really enjoyed our stay a lovely setting Would highly recommend
The hotel is beautiful but old Had a lovely stay and an excellent nights sleep. My only negatives would be the separate bathroom and the service at breakfast was not great. No one to greet us or take our order. Had to flag down a waitress to get a pot of tea and no toast offered with breakfast. We would stay again though especially if the evening menus were to change.
Romantic and peaceful.
Beautiful hotel. Excellent food. Fabulous surroundings.
Stunning cottage
We stayed in the cottage and it was absolutely beautiful and the staff were super friendly, can’t wait to come back for a visit.
What a find
A chance one night stop over in February introduced us to Springkell. Wowed by the house, surroundings, brilliant staff, great food (good wine list) we returned for a three night break in March to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Absolutely fantastic stay, we will definitely be back because who doesn’t like to be thoroughly spoiled. Perfect base to explore local walks. Extra special thanks to Annette and Chloe
Very good value. Dinner and breakfast the very best.
Grand
Grand and delightful - hotel, staff, room, bed, dinner, breakfast, comfort, view.
This is the second time we have stayed comfortable rooms, excellent food , friendly staff and beautiful surroundings
Hotel was lovely and breakfast was fantastic, will definitely stay again.
Disappointing
Long driveway to hotel from main road in a bad state of repair. Lots of potholes and very muddy. Parking available in front of hotel but very muddy. No shoe cleaning facility available.
Lovely stay
We had a lovely stay, made all the better by how welcome the dog was. We had breakfast both mornings and an evening meal, food was excellent each time. Would definitely stay again.
Nice place, staff are so helpful
Nice hotel, very quirky in a good way. Staff were great and so helpful. Food in the restaurant was some of the best food I’ve had and I stay in a lot of hotels. The road in is awful and if you arrive in the dark you may think you’re going the wrong way, you’re not. Also make sure you leave on the same road you came in on. My sat nav took me the opposite way and it took me down a dead end road which I got stuck in the mud and at 06.30am in January isn’t much fun. Not the fault of the hotel just thought I’d mention it
Wonderful find. Very comfy beds room lovely and warm. Tasty breakfast.
Amazing grand building. Cosy rooms
Beautiful hotel
We had a wonderful experience staying at Spinkell. Everything was excellent, from the warm welcome to the high standard of food and furnishings. This old stately home is set in far reaching beautiful grounds. It is used as a wedding venue but also provides bed breakfast to other visitors at quieter times. Our room was spacious. We had a superking bed. The room was warm and decorated in keeping with the age and splendour of the building with a view of the grounds. It had a modern ensuite bathroom with a powerful shower. We enjoyed a delicious evening meal and next morning a very good breakfast. The staff were all friendly and helpful, and we thoroughly enjoyed our one night stay.
Wonderful
We had a wonderful stay at Springkell rooms lovely , staff friendly , good food. The house and grounds are amazing ,beautifully kept and a nice mix of traditional and modern character. Would highly reccomend and will definitley be returning again. Very dog friendly is a bonus.
Kennel cottage
The cottage is warm, comfortable, clean and well equipped. The staff are lovely and every helpful, food delicious in the restaurant
Fabulous in every way
This is a simply extraordinary place. Like a stately home with just 8 guest bedrooms. Magnificent house and garden, traditional bedrooms, fabulous beds and contemporary en-suite bathrooms. Lovely relaxed staff, great bar, yummy breakfasts
Victorian style building, with a modern decor. Limited staff go out of their way to please. Grounds are amazing.
Stopoff from Great Glen to Herefordshire
Lovely country house hotel. Warm room, clean and well appointed with good view. Room had a shower but a request for the use of a nearby bath was sorted and a robe and slippers delivered within minutes. Lovely friendly staff and delicious food served in the restaurant. First class Scottish breakfast in the morning and only 7 minutes from the motorway. Just needed an excuse to stay longer.
Beautiful Mansion House Hotel
Beautiful property, stayed in a lovely room with a private bathroom across the hall, only stayed one night so didn't get to explore the lounge or walk around the grounds. Also represents fantastic value, few minor points, room was quite cobwebby and had a few bulbs blown not really inconvenient enough to warrant a complaint just maybe needs a bit more attention on housekeeping. Lovely rib eye for dinner with views over the grounds, dining room lacked ambience probably it was a bit too bright.
Nice stop over on our travels in the SW Scotland
A very unique place to stay on our travels to our final destination in Castle Douglas. The country house hotel is situated just south of Lockerbie. Pretty easy to find along a long driveway. The staff are all excellent and super friendly. The hotel is more of a wedding destination but for all of that they made us welcome and we spent a very pleasant two nights at the hotel. Breakfasts and dinner were great. Not your usual 'nouvelle cuisine' but very well cooked and presented. Great soups! Definitely worth a detour.
Overnight stop
Wonderful building and view. A little run down. A cavernous dining room which was a shame as other rooms eg lounge areas were quite cosy despite high ceilings etc. Bathroom was across the corridor and a fabric screen placed for our privacy which was rather strange. Bath was deepest I’ve ever seen and really not useable for us old folk. Staff were lovely and food was good if rather pricey.
Beautiful Unique Property
Beautiful property but needs some work.
Property is well maintained and rooms are spacious with modern bathrooms. Breakfast was a disappointment as several items mentioned on menu were not available. Staff tried there best but we had to keep on asking for tea spoons, sugar and butter etc.
when we request bathroom with a bathtub, they quickly rearranged our room. it was agreat help especially after the long drive.
Springkell hotel run down
Not as expected for luxury double room , very small, no dressing table , tea coffee etc was on very low table . No bar menu on that states it is available on their website along with bar menu . Not willing to accommodate our requirements. We had to leave hotel so that we could eat and not what we planned on a relaxing overnight stay. Hotel entrance was dirty with a steep ramp, obviously doing renovations or repairs also not expected . Dogs in breakfast restaurant which is unhygienic. Very small room overall and dirty shower
Excellent for dogs
Excellent hotel, clean tidy and very dog friendly. Room large enough for 2 adults and 2 large dogs. Great space to walk dogs too.
Stunning location, friendly and helpful staff, and very comfortable room…thank you!
A Work in Progress
An amazing family home with lots of ongoing improvements taking place inside and outside. Such a mammoth task but well worth the preservation. Rooms are being modernised with furnishings and bathrooms. Our room was comfortable with large opening windows which we appreciated. Bathroom spacious with separate bath, shower and toilet. Breakfast was set out on long table in main hall with 2 staff available to assist. Hot drinks were served at table in large dining room. Evening meal was table service for small group and large group helped themselves, same as breakfast. Strolled the grounds which was peaceful. Enjoyed a short time in comfy lounge chairs in a large room with many other lounge chairs and huge TV. Separate bar area for drinks. A number of young staff in service.
Has potential but…! Didn’t feel that reality chimed with what promised on website. Lack of “present” management. Beautiful grounds but entrance shabby and neglected. No shampoo etc provided. Housekeeping lacking. Lovely area. Great friendly and helpful young staff are greatest assets.
Lovely hotel shame about food
The hotel is lovely views are great. But the food was terrible extremely overpriced for was was badly made pub grub. The room was tidy however. Water damage from shower in bathroom due to poor layout. The bed was smashed thought the wall when we arrived and loud creaking when moving in bed. No towls in room when we arrived. We asked for a early breakfast and was provided a table that had been made the night before no water for kettle and warm milk
Amazing Experience
The staff were very friendly and made us feel welcome. We had dinner as the hotel which was first class.
Amazing!
We had a lovely stay, it's beautiful house in a peaceful location. We felt very welcomed from all the staff. The food was really delicious too! The only thing I would suggest is maybe some small lights or solar path lights for walking around the incredible grounds at dusk/night. Thank you for having us!
Nice but needs some tlc
We stayed one night as a family of four. Our room was very spacious and overall clean, it could do with some tlc but it worked well with having two small children. Staff were friendly and polite although a little unconfident with providing information and taking charge especially at breakfast. The grounds were lovely and we enjoyed exploring. The parking seemed to be on the grass verges. The hotel has the potential to have the wow factor but just needs some tlc and a bit more attention to detail.
The place was lovely staff could not have been more helpful we were made us feel very welcome. Beds very comfortable breakfast excellent.
The building on first arriving looked imposing and formal but the staff were so friendly; helpful, and accommodating to all requests we couldn’t have been made more welcome and comfortable. It’s obvious that the owner is working hard to update and renovate this beautiful country house in a quiet, peaceful rural setting, amidst great gardens. Some of the decor was ‘tired looking’ and worn but easily forgotten when shown into the bedroom and recently renovated ensuite bathroom. It was a little difficult to locate Springkell first day but fun ‘exploring’ the area! The food and folks and service were amazing. I’m looking forward to returning soon
Excellant
Second stay at this hotel. Well appointed room with 4 poster bed. Staff very attentive and friendly. Excellent food and service. Spacious grounds. Will stay there again
Very friendly and caring
Needs some TLC
Photos of hotel make it look fantastic and we were looking forward to a treat - wrong. The long drive is so rutted as to be very uncomfortable, the parking is on muddy drive/grass and the room was TINY - King size bed in a single size room. Room and en suite were spotlessly clean and the bed was comfortable but required climbing over my wife to get in & out. Food was excellent and hot.
Worth a visit
Last minute booking but lovely one night stay. New rooms were comfortable and clean . Staff were welcoming and extremely helpful. Lots of little unexpected facilities around the hotel, pool table etc . Lots of space in bar and dining areas. Staff and management seem very keen to continually improve and meet expectations. I think this one to watch
A lovely time away
The hotel was really nice built in the 17 hundreds nice n clean staff exceptionally helpful and very friendly we required a disabled room there was stairs into hotel which I could manage then once in everything on the level room was lovely with lots of space and had a wetroom with rails to hold onto and the choice of 2 different shower heads to use the meals were really good would highly recommend it
Beautiful Springkell and the superb young team of staff more than fulfilled our need for a relaxed and restful visit. We stayed for 3 nights midweek early September with our dog. Although the hotel was busy with guests , the main guest areas dining rooms, bar spacious
Excellent
Excellent accommodation and service!
Fantastic building and beautiful grounds
Never stayed here before was only overnight stay.Very difficult to find long distance from road and wasn’t made up.Parking not too good.Check in was easy not too happy with all the stairs and was not advertised in the booking.Meal was not good the steak was very tough.Theactual house was unbelievable beautiful was worth the disappointment
Springkell | Home in Lockerbie | Travala.com
The staff are lovely and very helpful
