Fantastic stay. I would return

Wow!!!

Simply the best overnight stay we’ve ever experienced on every level. Best staff, best property location, room, amenities, parking, the works. They even provided a special goodie box for our dog Murphy when we checked in, and bed and feeding dishes in the room.

Fun place to stay in isn’t middle of everything.

The building is beautiful and the staff is lovely it is not deluxe accommodation but well above its cost-the only negative we had was the gym/fitness area is woefully inadequate and unfortunately the only treadmill (an old fashioned one at that) broke while we were there

Beautiful historic building very nicely renovated

This place is awesome. The building and history are amazing. Really close to the old town area, 5 min walk. We did not get a chance to use the spa or baths but they looked amazing. We did sit out by the pool for a few hours and it was great. The room was extremely large and the bathroom was huge, not sure if they all have 2 different showers like ours but wow, tons of room to spread out and relax. I would love to have spent a few days in this hotel and want to check out the others in their portfolio as well. Highly recommended!

Excellent but…

Very good to stay there. The Check in was bad because they did not find my booking for a while and when they found it there was no excuses at all for the inconvenience. The tea welcome set in the room is nice but when a couple wants the same flavour of tea, it is not available and if you want more tea bags you are charged for it! The breakfast is excellent and the staff is very helping and smiling. The pool is excellent.

Since it is a Pousada one would expect the hotel to be of a superior quality, which it is - service is great and breakfast was a good choice and all topped up when needed. Well situated for the town centre. We did however have a couple of issues. The bed was huge, which is a plus, but the mattress was quite hard and my husband did not have a good sleep. The second problem was that the pool area is small, on the day we came there were not enough sunbeds so people had to sit on the grass. There was plenty of room for more beds but they weren't there. Also, the pool is situated on the north side of the building and is in full shade for most of the day. We only stayed for one night so only used the pool for a quick cooling dip but if we had been there for a longer visit this would have been a real negative for us.

Great friendly environment!

Booked three rooms. Amazing property, great location, friendly staff. The only thing that was vexing is that the air conditioning was controlled by the front desk and you had to call down to them to cool down the room which makes zero sense. And there is really, really not enough lighting in the bathroom.

Fabulous pousada with easy parking and close to historic center. The rooms are spacious, well appointed and come with robes and slippers. Breakfast was quite good with scrambled eggs, bacon and sautéed mushrooms in addition to usual baked goods, cheese and sliced salame. Outdoor pool, indoor pool (requires swimming cap), jacuzzi, sauna and paid massages available.

Amazing restored hospital into a fabulous hotel. Location is good for walking around the city. I would definitely stay here again.

A place not to miss..

Nothing to say except all was top class, superb with best care possible from staff.

I don’t often rave about a hotel, but this one is fantastic! It’s a gorgeous old building, totally renovated and beds and pillows were super comfortable. The dinner in the restaurant was superb (try the crispy salmon) and the buffet breakfast was small but high quality (I loved the array of fresh juices). Highly recommend this place.

The staff and service was exemplary. The food was excellent. The room was large, modern and well appointed.

Large room size. Beautiful large french doors as windows. Not easy to find the entrance by gps. Had to wait to borrow an iron that we ugently needed as we were there for a wedding.

A remarkable, grand historic building with 5 star service and sumptuous breakfast. Wow!

We were told at check in that restaurants were closed in Viseu on monday’s and that we should reserve for dinner at the hotel. We found 2 restaurants close by open on a Monday within walking distance.

Lovely Historic Hotel.

Lovely hotel and pleasant staff. The weather was amazing for end of April, but they dont put furniture to sit outside by the pool until Summer, that was disappointing. Balcony furniture didnt have cushions and very uncomfortable too, they did bring cushions when we asked though. You have to search for someone at the bar in the lounge, or go to reception to call them, they should put a bell on the bar. The barman was very helpful. Restaurant and food was very good. Nice big room but beds extremely hard so didnt sleep well. Air conditioning was not turned on yet so we had to sleep with the balcony door open as it was so hot. They were not prepared for the hot spell. Perhaps they should check the weather forecast in advance and prepare the hotel and facilities accordingly. This still didnt ruin our enjoyment and had a lovely stay. You must visit the cathedral in town during your stay.

Big rooms in a historic building

Big rooms, gorgeous, historic building, large Bath tub and decent spa. Avoid the restaurant if you're vegan, though. The risotto was good, but being told a Risotto without the cheese won't be the same was condescending and inaccurate. The rate I paid was great and the welcome was wonderful, I'd stay there again.

Perfect place to stay in Viseu

A perfect stay, justo too bad it was a short one! The staff, the room, the breakfast were all great. Didn't have the chance to try out the pool or the spa. The pool is medium sized but the pool area seems very relaxing.

What a jewel!

Beautiful historic building, large rooms, firm beds, great shower, excellent breakfast, friendly staff. We only had one night there. Wish we had had more time to enjoy this lovely town and superb hotel.

A great atmosphere to relax in

This was my second visit to Pousada de Viseu. There is so much to look at in the architecture of the building. the staff are very welcoming and accommodating. they make the stay at the hotel extra special. The spa is great and Julia the masseur gave the best massage I have ever had! Bed a little hard, but rooms are clean and spacious enough.

Impressive Hotel, poor dining experienice.

Impressive with a “wow” factor. Really nice welcome. Grand setting in this nineteenth century period building which has been totally modernised inside. Lots of really thick stone walls and really super solid wooden floors, doors and furniture in modern design. Large comfortable room with a super sized bed. The air conditioning is noisy and the tv small and unfortunately there is a shower curtain over the bath - a glass screen would have been better. The WiFi is poor and constantly drops out. Free parking and very easy walking distance to the centre of Viseu. It also appears to be understaffed, as the staff work hard but there are often areas which are not manned and it requires going to find someone to serve you,but taking this into account, overall the hotel is very good . Dining is an experience! Things happen!! Food is brought without any warning or explanation, other than “from the kitchen “ . The dishes I had tended to be very bland and not particularly tasty. Generally underwhelming. We decided to eat elsewhere during the rest of our stay. Super hotel but don’t eat there! ****

Viseu

A really lovely hotel really large rooms with plenty of free parking within walking distance to the centre of Viseu. I would definitely stay here again.

Excellent hotel

It was a fabulous experience and would highly recommend this hotel. The staff was very friendly and helpful. My friend needed to find a bank and one of the staff actually walked her to the nearest bank just to make sure she could find it. The breakfast was fabulous and delicious. Wonderful hotel. The room was clean and spacious with comfortable beds and ambience. Loved it.

Fab festive stay

This is our second stay in the Pousada and we will continue to choose this hotel for its character, ambiance, room comfort, helpful staff, good food and breakfast is particularly delicious.

Beautiful building well maintained

This location is beautiful with easy parking. The staff is friendly and helpful. The beds were not very comfortable. We would like more up to date softer beds. Also, the hotel seems to keep their staff thinly spread. There was never more than one person at the reception desk. There was one bartender who was going back and forth to the restaurant as well as serving the bar guests. Viseu is a lovely city and easy to walk around from the Pousada. The GPS in our rental car had the wrong location for the hotel. Luckily, my cell phone google maps could locate the hotel for us in the dark.

Spacious room and helpful staff.

We are staying in the suite and room is spacious. Service is excellent except that there is always only one staff at the reception and she needs to handle check out, check in and enquiries. We have to wait awhile before our turn. But staff are very helpful. A lovely building.

Beautiful Pousada

We didn't know what to expect in Viseu, but were astonished to find such a gorgeous hotel that was a made-over hospital built in the mid-19th century. The staff was exceedingly helpful and courteous - the best! The rooms were spacious and impeccably clean. We can only use the term "excellent" when rating the staff, and the physical aspects of this hotel/pousada. If there's a "down" area to talk about it's the food. We ate one night in the central "courtyard" of the building with food from the dining room. A very good experience with a nicely prepared and presented veal tenderloin for both of us. It was a little pricey, but not bad. The other couple that we were traveling with ate that night at the hotel's Friday night buffet. They rated it as "all right" for the price. The breakfasts were disappointing both mornings: watery scrabbled eggs, stale pastries, and limited choices to avoid these bad items.

Nice hotel easy to find.

What a great building with a history. Staff friendly and helpful. The foyer with the bar is huge and a good place to have a drink. Breakfast was nice.

Immaculate & Beautiful Historic Hotel.

We stayed in this well located and beautifully designed hotel for 2 nights. It was very good value. Reception staff were charming and very helpful. Easy free parking next to the hotel. We loved our room on the top floor overlooking the town of Viseu from our balcony. It was very comfortable, spacious. Lovely bathroom. Good free WiFi. Breakfast was delicious. We would recommend this hotel and would love to stay here again.

Old elegance

The room was huge and the hotel is very elegant with huge open spaces and minimalist decor. Its steps away from the quaint old center

A very pleasant stay

We have just returned from a very pleasant stay at this lovely hotel. The staff were excellent, very friendly and very helpful. Breakfast was plentiful and catered for a lot of tastes. The hotel was very well located for an easy walk into the old town. Plenty of nice restaurants to try nearby. We would not hesitate to recommend the Pousada de Viseu and hope to return ourselves one day.

Awesome hotel

Breakfast, room and staff are outstanding. Maybe the best value I've ever experienced at a hotel. Restaurant and breakfast buffet are excellent. The beds are oversized kings that would fit a giant and incredibly comfortable.

Step back in time to Grandeur setting

For what was once a hospital, the hotel centre is a massive floor space to eat, drink, relax or listen at night to the pianist play. Rooms are comfortable and quiet with all necessary amenities.

Place of character

The building is an old hospital site of great character, which has been converted to a very high standard. Many of the features are stunning, with a lot of airy spaces. The internal covered court yard is massive enhanced by very good use of natural light.

This was a lovely hotel and the staff were helpful. Viseu though is for a predominantly more mature visitor. The entertainment at the hotel was the most charming with a live piano set on the weekend.

An excellent conversion of an old hospital which gives large comfortable rooms and huge public areas. The breakfast is very good. Highly recommended.

Nice location

Very nice location and easy parking. Unhappy with lack of follow up response from management regarding a reported incident in the pool area.

Stayed in the hotel from checkin to checkout!

We came to Viseu as a pitstop for Porto, and we were tired and exhausted from travelling so this hotel was perfect for just staying in and relaxing as everything you need is on site. We didn't even go out of the hotel once before we checked out the next day. Beds were huge, rooms comfortable and service very humble and polite. Restaurant dinner was good, not execllent, but we didn't feel the need to explore any other options. Portions were very generous. In the evening a professional pianist was playing a grand piano in the enormous foyer and we loved sitting in a sofa listening to him, and drinking red wine from huge wine glasses. Would recommend this for a luxurious couples retreat. On a sidenote I did the detox massage and got a cold almost immediatly after. I read up on it, and really you should drink a LOT of water before and after a detox to flush the released toxins, which I wasn't told by the masseuse. This felt to me a little unprofessional and made the stay a little uncomfortable. I don't however blame the hotel for this. Just a heads up to anyone comtemplating the massage.

Up graded to a top floor room with large deck to enjoy the sunsets.

An old hospital successfully reconverted into a hotel. Gorgeous building, clean and spacious rooms, efficient staff, copious breakfast, overall very comfortable stay.

excellent pousada

An amazing building and extremely comfortable suite. Dinner was decent and breakfast adequate. Only down side was the spa where no one was in attendance twice so we couldn't book a massage

Beautifully designed and decorated. Is spacious and luxurious. History displayed throughout adds to the hotel's beauty. Staff were friendly and helpful. Located a min walk to historical centre.

We were on vacation in the area, and love to stay at the hotel. We found marvalese and elegant rooms. The women at the reception were very helpful. The jacuzzi was very small. The outside swimming pool was quit cold and we didn't use it. The breakfast was excellent.

This is hotel was a hospital that has been renovated into a luxury hotel. The rooms are large and very nicely appointed. The hotel staff is outstanding and very helpful. The hotel is within easy walking distance to the city sites.

Ideal stay for those with discerning taste.

I mainly got to stay just in the evenings as I was in Viseu for work purposes. I appreciated the spacious rooms and the high level of cleanliness throughout the hotel. Staff were friendly, courteous and professional and spoke in many languages which was a bonus. Reception provided printed maps not only to me but to others who were taking wine trips etc. in the region. One slight complaint is that I often had to wait for a staff member to appear if I needed a coffee in the bar/seating area, there was also no facilities for coffee making in the room.

Fabulous historic building, all modern comforts.

Great experience overall, but Expedia needs to change the "complimentary wireless" info, as there is now surcharge for internet use. However, when we cited the info we relied on when making our reservation, we were offered some free connection vouchers to use during our stay (apparently the move to start charging for wireless was very recent). Everything else was wonderful: huge, spotless room, comfortable beds, great buffet breakfast, attentive staff. And the conversion of the historic building into a modern hotel was done in a remarkably tasteful way. Highly recommended, especially for the bargain price of a little over $100/night we were able to get!

Stunning conversion of Hospital to Hotel

Converted very imaginatively from a C19th hospital, this hotel has lovely large rooms with huge windows. Very helpful and friendly english speaking staff, reasonable rates and a good position just a 10 minute walk from the centre of town make this a perfect choice for the wonderfully friendly town of Viseu

Most likely to visit again in the future - recommended!

My partner and I have stayed at several other Pousadas in the past while exploring Portugal ( I am Portuguese). It is a great feeling to stay in a renovated and converted building with history, great facility and services. On this the Pousadas de Portugal generally won't let you down. The Pousada of Viseu offers great comfort, the room was larger than average and very clean. Usual prices at Pousadas (slightly higher than at other and similar establishments perhaps). The food in the restaurant was simply divine. Attentive and professional service too. The outdoor pool is small but nice enough to cool down and have a swim. You do get a huge sense of space in this Pousada (almost to the point that feels empty at times). The free use of the Spa is an additional bonus! Quite romantic!
