Nice stay

Had the all inclusive food was very fresh. I love chicken but this was rarely on offer - it was always pork. The snack bar had some healthy food which was good. Enjoyed that you poured your wine from a bottle and you could take bottle to your table at meal times. Big queues at breakfast for coffee machines. Place was very clean but rooms could be noisy and let lots of light in but we improvised with putting the bed sheet over the door. Also long queue at check in and whilst I had no issues with the staff I wouldn’t say they went above and beyond. Cocktails were very good and freshly made and we had Smirnoff vodka included in the AI. I did have a nice time and it was good for the money but I would go somewhere different next time

Lovely hotel, lots of nice pools and bars at a great price. Food was great. Me and my friend stayed half board and we got charged €2.90 for a draft soda in the canteen we thought was included with the meal which was the only annoying thing about the hotel. Also the bag room is not locked which I did not appreciate with our passports being in there etc. The rooms are great value for the money, the hotel was able to always het us taxis within minutes of asking which was helpful.

Great Stay

Clean, comfortable and within easy walking distance of the yumbo and cita shopping areas, 12-15mins walk to the beach. Overall pleasant stay with friendly polite staff on reception. After 5 nights stay I felt the bedding should have been changed, that would be my only negative and it’s not a biggy!

Nice hotel with bad night intertainment

The hotel are in a verey good condition. 2 nice swimming pool with loads of chairs. The staffs are just fenomenal. Good variety of food. The pizza on the restaurant just amazing. The only down point are the intertainment ar night. The singers and the band just put people outside the hotel or get bored. Put games, shows , use the intertainment team at night for the guests. At put the singers in the restaurant.

Cool Hotel with an Open Air Crossfit & Activities

The resort offers a lot of activities and sporting facilities for the enthusiast. It offers various package including all-inclusive and buffet food. The quality of the F&B is just fine but don't expect a lot. There is also a Supermarket opposite the hotel and shops nearby. Very child friendly also. Unfortunately the parking was paid. We had a comfortable stay and it was really cool the Hotel has a cross fit center, free of charge for the Hotel Guests on site (open air) with a very enthusiastic trainer, Pedro!

Good hotel with some caveats

Good hotel. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Some caveats are that the a/c does not cool during the entire day, if you need it to sleep at night better ask for a fan. The food at the restaurant was edible but not something you would look forward to, especially if you have the all inclusive plan then you will start to see how most items of lunch turn into dinner and then into breakfast. the all inclusive plan might be justified if you drink your fair share.

Decent hotel, Disappointing service.

Let’s start with the positives. The hotel is fairly centrally located, 5-10 min walk away from Yumbo centre. Room was clean, with a good view (I stayed on the 7th floor). Free shuttle service to the beach which is fantastic. However... The air conditioning in the room is appalling. During the day, it’s so weak that you wouldn’t notice it existed. Same with the WiFi, it’s so slow that I simply switched off WiFi and used roaming 4G. The food quality at breakfast and dinner wasn’t great at all, compared to other hotels I stayed in the same area. Service at the restaurant was poor too. Overall, it’s a decent hotel but you could get much better value for the money you spend at some other hotels in the area.

Disappointed in this 4* hotel. Majority of guests were non English speaking, therefore, food and entertainment were geared towards them accordingly. Maid failed to replace milks, teabags etc in the room. Only serve Tropical lager on AI. Show cooking chefs quite rude. You always had to wait for this food, being told to “come back in 5minutes”, not helpful when you have a plate of warm veg! One older chef actually tutted when I asked if he could pour me a juice, as I was balancing 2 glasses, he snatched the glass from me and #lammed it down open filled. Would not return!

Disappointing to say the least

We booked this holiday because of the photos on their website. The grounds are beautifully kept but very small, we saw no cabanas at all, no outside gym and were disappointed on arrival. The pool looks inviting but it was freezing - be aware its not heated. We were on 'All Inclusive' but this doesn't include bottled water. You get two free in your room on arrival and then you have to pay. You have to pay a deposit for the towels, a deposit for the safe and then its Euros 3 a day and if you want to borrow an iron, you have to pay a deposit for that too. The food wasn't very good. Overcooked and mostly cold. Hygiene wasn't great, I saw one cook touch her face, then took some egg shell out of someones fried egg she was cooking using the same hand. They don't use fresh eggs for omelettes but buy in bottled mixed egg! Yuk. The uncooked meat and fish was kept by the hot plate it was to be cooked on and it was left there not kept cool for some time. I basically went vegetarian which was poor. Their chips and roast potatoes were nice. On the last day a cockroach fell from the top of the tea and coffee making area on our table. We caught it in a glass, showed the waiter and he shrugged his shoulders. If you see one cockroach you know there are hundreds more hiding. The bedroom was kept clean. Very disappointing to say the least. Will definitely not be going back there or to any Barcelo hotel. However, the sand dunes at Maspalomas were amazing.

Fantastic hotel!

We had an incredible time staying at the hotel for a week upgrading to Premium All Inclusive in one of the apartments. The upgrade was sooo worth it! The bar menu is extensive and the gin menu fantastic. We absolutely loved the Balinese beds, hot tub area and use of the Aloha 37 restaurant. The hotel facilities and surroundings are exceptionally well maintained and kept. We only left the hotel once during our stay to go to the beach but returned after a couple hours because we enjoyed the variety of chilling by the pool or Bali beds. The only criticism we have is with the apartments themselves. The rooms are very nicely sized and have plenty of space. However they are really dated now and are screaming out to be renovated and updated to match with the rest of the hotel and the surroundings. We also very much enjoyed the entertainment that was put on by the team, it was varied and very well executed.

Worth a visit

Had a sunday night stay here last week. I was in a lovely big modern room with tea and coffee making facilities. The lady at reception was very helpful and friendly and the barmaid was also very efficient. The food was good. There was plenty of fresh fruit and salad, bread, cheese and desserts on offer. I liked the soup too. I don't think there was a specific vegetarian option but I certainly didn't starve. At breakfast, most of the coffee machines were breaking down, causing queues and delays. Perhaps this could be reviewed. The wifi worked and in various locations which was good...often this can be an unreliable service in hotels. I appreciated the landscaped grounds...the cacti and the herb garden were lovely. I thought the white chairs that light up looked good too. One of the swimming pools looks like it may need a little maintenance to an area of tiling at the bottom. The pools are a good size though. There was maintenance work underway, including on the roof but this didn't cause any noise. I enjoyed my stay and would certainly consider another visit!

Okay stay

The hotel overall was nice. But the website/pictures make it out to be a lot better than it is. I rang before my stay to make sure I could use the ‘balastine beds’ they said it was all included. This was a lie, you have to pay €20 for the day. You get a bottle of champagne and a ‘bowl’ of fruit. They tried to fob us off by giving us a little plastic pot of fruit that was picked up from the all inclusive section, when advertised on the pictures was a large fruit bowl which we waited for as we paid for it! I did half board which was breakfast & dinner, they let us change it from dinner to lunch if we fancied going out one night though. Apart from that the hotel was lovely, room was great, food was fantastic, didn’t see one of the shuttles to the beach however but we liked having a walk or just got in a taxi which was around €3/4 Euro each time depending if the taxi driver wanted to go round the long way or the short way. Oh and don’t listen to the people tried to sell boat party on the streets, it was awful.

Terrible stay in Occidental Margaritas with family

We live in USA and had to go to Barcelona to see the football match. We decided to spend a few days in Gran Canaries. We booked online and took the half board package for two adults and two children. Occidental Margaritas have issue with basics. For example: - they don't provide iron table and iron in the rooms. If you ask for it, they want a 20 euro deposit and have only few of them. You have to necessarily return within 24 hours - they provide safe, but you have to pay both - a deposit of 12 euros and a daily fees to use the safety locker!! - no soft tissues in the room for general hygiene. Nothing more than a toilet paper - they give one small soap for washing hands and expect you to use it throughout the stay. We were 4 of us. Nether did they put more soaps, nor they put more during the stay - their system in archaic. During the last 2 days, it messed up with our names. Someone else's name was appearing against our room number - They did not help in arranging a car with a driver. We wanted to do a car for half a day with a driver. They essentially told us to figure it out ourselves - No courtesy to ask for help with luggage, etc. - the bartender next to the dining area did not understand English. It was such an effort to explain to her that my wife wanted brandy with hot water! - The AC would not work. In spite of having control in room, they switch it off from the central control and only enable it when the temperature is more than 24 degrees Celsius!

Ideal for Families

Hotel is actually two structures - we stayed in the "apartment" block: rooms quite dated but clean and comfortable. Understand that the other structure has more modern hotel rooms, so probably best to book the hotel rather than the apartments. Ideal for families as there is plenty to do for the kids and the friendly animation team can keep them busy all day with various activities (archery, football, mini-golf etc) and there is also both an indoor & outdoor gym, tennis as well as yoga and other excerise sessions for adults. Two pools each with a bar/restaurant and entertainment on the stage each evening was good fun with plenty of laughs for the family - the animation team really do work hard to ensure everyone is having an enjoyable stay, without being too overbearing :) Breakfast and dinner are buffet style and selection was plenty & enjoyable. Dinner has two sittings and at check in you are allocated either earlier or later sitting, though dining room staff don't monitor and we found that best time was towards the end of first sitting as had less people in restaurant. Hotel location OK and has free shuttle transfers at various times throughout the day to either Playa del Inglés (touristy) or Maspalomas beach (more up-market shopping and bars/restaurants). A visit to the Dunes is a must! Small but well stocked supermarket right next door to the hotel is handy for lunch supplies or drinks (if you are not on the All Inclusive deal). Would we go back? Yes.

I enquired about this and the reception staff told me that you don't book; there was only one restaurant. not true. website was deceiving; photographs of the luxury bed, hot tubs etc. in reality had to pay for the use and kids not allowed in the area. not all inclusive, some facilities had additional charges - not advertised as 'gold band' so a bit of a surprise I know not all facilities are included but there are correctly advertised restaurant, reception and bar staff - answered questions, no rapport

Nice place to stay

This is a nice hotel although you must remember there are 2 completely separate towers, one of these is quite new, the other dated however it's the one containing the apartment-like rooms. For a short stay, or any stay having breakfast, half or full board, who needs a kitchenette anyway. You are better off at the nicely newer bedrooms in the other tower. You have all the facilities within, but the pool is somewhat odd and small-ish for the almost 500 rooms. Staff was very friendly and helpful that's out of question, great at any time. Dinner was very nice with lots of choice, and so was the breakfast although in this occasion, the quality was questionable with some products. it's quite unfortunate the cost of the hotels in Gran Canaria is so nonsensically high, however with this hotel you can have a good value for money hence quite recommended.

Wonderful Resort experience

With breakfast and dinner included, the experience was very relaxing and affordable. The hotel room was large and spacious, had an impeccable view, and large balcony. Keep in mind, there are two types of hotels. The older larger hotel has a lot bigger rooms, better air circulation, and kitchen included.

Fantastic friendly hotel

Had a perfect 5 night stay in between Christmas and new year. Hotel is spotlessly clean with beautiful gardens. We had a room in the apartment block which although required some more upgrading was clean and tidy. Beds were extremely comfy and the balcony a great size. All staff work tirelessly to ensure your stay is perfect. Would not hesitate to recommend.

Enjoyable!

Food was good, nice selection, a lot of fish options so bit difficult if you dont like fish but i coped quite well. Breakfast was lovely, pancakes and waffles to die for! Lots of steps throughout this resort which was nice exercise - most of the time! The outside gym area was great. We requested an iron via our room phone and had to go to reception to pay a deposit of 20 euros, and then had to wait 45 minutes for housekeeping to bring it upstairs - this was annoying as we were waiting to go out and would have rather collected it. We then had to take our receipt to reception to get our deposit back whilst the iron was still in the room for housekeeping to collect - so bit pointless. All in all, great stay. Good for the older crowd, but didnt bother us (mid 20s). Entertainment was ok on an evening too. Only issue was the bed wasnt a double and they said there wasnt any available so they 'converted' the twin beds into a double which didnt work too well but was an okay option, would prefer a double as i then got back ache from falling down the gap.

views and queues

Hotel is in a good location, close to shops and entertainment. I arrived at 1pm and my room was ready. My request for a high floor quiet room was honoured, and my seventh floor room overlooked the pool and central courtyard. Very comfortable room and bathroom with safe and TV which had at least three channels in English. Wonderful buffet selection for both breakfast and dinner. Reception always seemed understaffed, and often there was one long queue for check in /out and general enquiries. Dinner is supposedly on two sittings but the staff don't seem to monitor this. I opted for the second sitting that started at 7 45, and soon learnt the importance of arriving promptly - twenty minutes later there is a long queue of people waiting to be seated. Some of the evening restaurant staff are unhelpful and one chef who serves at a counter is very rude. The evening entertainment is usually vocalists on a stage poolside, but some nights they double up as comperes for bingo? / games? .. this can go on until 10 30 and be loud and annoying. I reported that the phone in my room did not work and was told it would be fixed - this did not happen

Did the job!

Went for a week of sun, all inclusive. Sat by the pool every day, convenient food right around the corner. Good selection of food. Holiday box was awesome! (Crossfit). Would go back. Entertainment in the evening was interesting, would have said not for the young (under 40). Had a couple of nights with noisy neighbours up till 2-3a.m. but that was just unlucky, reception sorted them out.

Ok Hotel short bus ride from beach.

We were sent to an old apartment room away from the main hotel. when we booked a new larger room which was sold as a king size bed and one other. However neither of the beds were king size but the room was much newer, bigger and brighter. Food was ok reasonable choices nicely cooked. Pools clean, enough sun beds and shades. There is also a strange setup with 3 kinds of boarding Half, Silver All inclusive where you still have to pay for some things and Gold All inclusive. This needs checking before you book.

Great Hotel

11 night stay in apartment with family, upgraded to all inclusive before we left UK. This was a good choice. Apartment was comfortable, cleaned every day. Food was good if a bit hectic at times in the restaurant as it was not big enough for number of guests. Good choice of food, Dined in the al a carte restaurant Aloah one night this was very enjoyable. Staff were friendly and knowledgeable, and helpful. Check out time of 12 is a good time, and although our flight was evening we could still store our bags and go for a last meal in Playa del Ingles. Good free bus to beach, and good position for shops and close to Yumbo centre, walking distance.

Our stay at Occidental Margaritas.

Over the last 16 years. We have stayed at this hotel. The staff are very friendly and accommodating. The outside hotel facilities is excellent, the swimming pools, the garden and flowers, the reception area and drinks, the shows at night. So we really enjoyed the experience. However, we are family of four and vegetarian, there was very little choice of vegetarian food, even they put meat in rice. The labels were. OT that great either but we managed. The restaurant staff were fantastic as they made us rice with vegetables when requested. The worst part of our stay was the hotel apartment. It was really outdated, old and most thing were broken. The double bed was sofa bed and my struggle to sleep with her back pain. My son would not use the room and use the balcony most of the time. It was really dirty and I just to ignore it. I would not stay in the room again or apartment. The photos on the website shows for the main hotel which is misleading. Overall we had a great stay. Would I use the apartment hotel again, definitely not. The staff on the other hand made our stay comfortable, the cleaners were really good too. Please update the rooms. Thanks

Great and will come back

Room a little dated, but was fine as you don't spend much time there Food great quality, with big selection, but so many greedy people, that are inpatient, and no real atmosphere during meal times. Eat and leave Evening entertainment was not my cup of tea, bingo, and bad singers BUT on the positive all entertainment stops by 11pm so nice and quite again after that. Staff friendly and chatty Taxi to local beaches are about 5 euros, good location to everything Drink prices seemed to change on the bar and time of day I would bring my family back to this hotel as we had a great 2 weeks stay, and would recommend to others

A great family hotel with good food and facilities

Once you're in there really isn't a lot of need to leave the hotel. The all-inclusive option allowed for food at all times, drinks were on tap which you helped yourself to, two swimming pools, and the hotel came with sports facilities, etc. The grounds were kept immaculate and were constantly maintained. The food was plentiful with lots of variety. I would highly recommend this hotel.

Superb! If anyone says negative ignore. Excellent food-great selection, welcoming staff, clean rooms, great shows, mixture of nationalities, great location! Ten mins walk from the number 66 bus stop, which takes you to and from the airport and drops you to the yumbo shopping centre (save yourself 30 euro) . Ten mins walk to the beach! I could not fault!

Best family holiday experience

I have to say this was the best family holiday experience we have had. The hotel was really big and lovely, We stayed on the 5th floor and had a great view out onto the pool. The rooms were big and very clean with a balcony. The location I would also is pretty good. the hotel offers a short shuttle bus to the two main beaches which are lovely and we often walked as it was only 20 mins. Each night they had different entertainment which was really good and child friendly. We spent two whole days at the hotel and felt really relaxed. Sunbeds were always available, the staff were really friendly, we took part in several of the activities that took place all day. Food was such a big choice and I would say is very good for a 4 star hotel. they had every option of everything. I would really recommend this hotel for families, especially with children

Really nice family hotel and great location

We stayed at the apartments building of the complex and all facilites where great. Nice handy little kitchen, daily cleaned and great balcony with a pool view (definitely recommend this room view as the other rooms would face the entertainment and the sound can be very noisy). We had our 2 year old son and luckily could no hear any of the entertainment in the evenings, resulting in a peaceful night sleep for him. Also a great play area for kids with it's own pool and 3 nice swimming pools. Food in the restaurant was good and the only little downside to our trip was the vegetarian choices, there really isn't much, even normal veg dishes had added meat, fish ingredients added and there was a slight issue with language to get an definitive answer on vegetarian dishes. We made do with chips, pasta, bread and deserts but unfortunately there was not much else to eat. Also the items were right next to meat/fish dishes and a number of the serving spoons look to have been used amd mixed with the veg dishes. Overall the hotel, location, staff is great and we would happily head back.

Value for money

I loved this hotel! I've never been in favour of half board but it suited us so well. Food is very good with lots of options. A tip for hard working waiters, since they don't come and serve tea and coffee, no need to put cups on the tables (sometimes it took time to get tables set up). Put cups by tea/coffee machines instead. More practical. Most hotels in Playa del Ingles are ugly but this hotel looks fresh and nice. I will come back for sure. Best of all, guests behave nicely, some hotels with certain nationalities don't have manners and just push aside queues, but that wasn't happening here.

Never again!

Sewers Backing Up, Balcony walls crumbling, neither elevator working with everyone climbing the stairs (we were on the 8th floor), The resort across the street has a blaring microphone with the "Cruise director" type woman screaming pool games and contests at six people sitting by the pool, making a nap at anytime of day completely impossible......coupled with the stench in the room from the sewer backing up the stay at this place felt a little like torture.

Very pleasant stay

We spent a week at Occidental Margaritas and we had a very pleasant stay. The room we stay at was new and well equipped. The staff is very attentive and always available and smiling. The food was good and there was also a good variety. There are two big pools (the water is not cold as I read in other reviews) well equipped with deckchairs. They also organize activities for kids in the playground and also for the adults during the day as well as shows in the evening. There is a tennis court and a gym as well. It's a family hotel but it is actually good for everyone. On my birthday the hotel management surprised me with a nice cake and a bottle of Spanish cava in my room. Very much appreciated! I would recommend this hotel for a pleasant holiday.

Food poisoning; staff couldn't care less

This was to be a glowing review but for the last 24 hours. In which: -My wife contracted food poisoning from the hotel buffet; passed out (bloody nose, large bump on forehead, chipped tooth). -The hotel recommended quack medical service that ripped us off €600 -After hearing about them poisoning her, the staff were utterly indifferent to our plight. They offered no apology or assistance. My wife, who was 19 weeks pregnant, contracted food poisoning from the hotel. We know it was from the hotel as we had paid for all inclusive package and didn't eat anything outside of the hotel. Staff called a "doctor" who took: Her temperature, her blood pressure and €90. This doctor said she could do no more and needed to send us to a clinic with an ultrasound. Once the ambulance (€245) took my wife to the clinic, she found that they were only able to take her blood pressure (and €118) so total rip off. Eventually (4am) she was able to find a maternity unit that gave her an ultrasound and the all clear. The next morning I went to reception, told them about her predicament and asked for redress. I was told I could have a late check out at a cost. I was pretty shocked. I can only assume that food poisoning is a common thing here. I tried a few times to speak to a manager but it's possible the manager ate the food in the buffet because she never turned up. In the end I was given a free late checkout to shut me up. I hauled my sick wife and my 2 year old son out alive.

We had a few days holiday to take so I looked around for hotels that catered for people who require gluten free diet and couldn't find many in that area. Settled for Margaritas which doesn't mention it on their website but had seen a Dutch review where the writer had been provided with gluten free bread. The hotel is a good walk from the beach but there is free bus service that operates - but not that many pick ups so you have to be disciplined at breakfast to catch one that gives you plenty of time at the beach. The room was clean but beds wasn't the most comfortable and seemed to have a plastic mattress protector which meant that sweat couldn't escape and so just went cold and clammy. Also was annoyed that housekeeping didn't replenish the toilet paper for the last couple of days. We opted for half board and food was acceptable, although I was impressed that they offered English style sausages at breakfast which was a welcome surprise. At the entrance to the restaurant there is a touch screen display with the dishes listed and the allergens present, however we found that the details were incomplete and in some cases inaccurate - if this was complete then would be a great tool for people with special dietary needs. The hotel does have a sauna but this is a chargeable extra and is only open during the day so we never got to use it. We did take a look at the rooftop solarium but were disappointed that it was quite small and bare/drab.

Package holiday hotel

This is a typical package hotel. The service is ok but not personalised. Rarely you get greeted by a member of staff, from the reception to the main restaurant. Too busy to notice you by. Quite a long walk to reach the main restaurant. The food diversity and quality is great. Suitable for families. Overall, good experience.

Great hotel in Gran Canaria

Our room was a good size with balcony looking at the pool. We needed a doctor and the nearby beach clinic was excellent although expensive. The afternoon games were fun. The dinners were very good. You have to pay for drinks at dinner...no free water. We enjoyed Playa Maspalomas with its boardwalk. The dining room at hotel is very crowded.

3 star at best.

More a 3 star hotel. We stayed for 9 nights in Barcelo Suites. Half board. The hotel itself is dated, the beds were relatively comfortable and the pool was in only a short walk away. The buffet served a collection of different foods but we struggled to find things to eat, and we are not that fussy eaters. The wifi? Non-existent. The signal was poor. We have a 1 year old and the playground was more than ideal for our child, little pool, plenty toys. We paid 1100 for the 9 nights. For 2 adults.
